Transmission Help Please

I'm looking to purchase an '87 R-688st with a 15 speed roadranger. Deep reduction works fine, highrange good, here's the problem. Truck will accelerate and shift through low range gears but when you let off the fuel the trans. makes a grinding noise on deceleration in all low range gears. Owner says he's driven it this way for years just coasts to a stop in neutral. Any ideas please? thanks.

At the very least, the transmission needs a bearing kit and probably a complete overhaul. Probably a problem in the low range side in the back box.

Adjust your offer to purchase accordingly.

,

There must be a problem with the serpentine belt.Just get your car to a good garage.

Geez man, you come up with some absolutely rediculous bullshit that has nothing to do with the problems mentioned, consistently.

Unless you have something positive to offer up for a problem someone is asking help for, please retain your thoughts to yourself as they are of no help.

I thought maybe I was being overly sensitive, but I guess not because it looks like Rob is on the same page as me. I read these posts the last few days and couldn't figure out why anyone would post such nonsense laden drivel.

We all like to help others solve their problems with trucks. It brings us together and I'm not wanting to see that philosophy hurt, or disrupted. I suspect the poster is very young, having little to no practical experience. He is a willing participant, with nothing being wrong with that, but nearly all of the posts have little, or nothing to do with the problems seeking advice for.

As most folks that work on anything know, not all knowlege is learned from a book, nor does a book always provide the correct answer being researched. Many times the correct answer is derived from "hands on" experience which is not always easily gained.

I've been seeing this also and wondered how you politely ask someone that is way out there in a galaxy far,far away to excuse himself from this web-site permantly.

Hi Mike, your reference goes along with how/why I so daintily stepped around the subject utilizing great finesse, and politeness. Ya'll know me and how difficult it is for me to get to the point so to speak sometimes.

There is another new poster that comes close to this category to. I too believe they should remain silent.

Yes, you are correct although they are not quite as far out in left field, yet.

They should probably stick to inventing things; light bulbs, phonographs, etc.

Glad i'm not the only one to notice this "trend" there are a few new posters on here lately that i have'nt a clue what they are talking about, or what they are trying to find out about! I guess they have'nt yet figured out the biggest majority of us are working people, dependant on the income from the equipment we run, and the advise given is sometimes saving someone a lot of money, downtime ,or frustration with a project! There is a time and place for humor/ fun, but it bothers me when someone makes light of a serious situation, when someone truly needs help. In the words of a wise man (my grandfather) "opinions are like assholes, everybody has one, but NOBODY wants to hear from it" please keep them to yourself!..............Mark

Joe your probably right about the back end of the trans. But the reason why i asked him about the P.T.O.is I had one leaking on one of my tractors so I pulled it off an put a new gasket in an left out a shim. Well it's a good thing my dad was still around because I woulda had the trans. out!! But that was when I was young an foolish now i'm old an foolish LOL

Your right! i very rarely even turn the volume up on my CB anymore, way too much BS for me! used to be a guy could get good directions,or help with something, now you get 10 people with 10 different ideas about how to get somewhere, i feel sorry for the poor guys that dont know north jersey,NYC etc. their pretty much screwed nowadays! i think if we just start reporting these idiots maybe they'll go away, take up somebody elses time......i dont get it either!!! I second that! this has been the only message board I have been on where I am interested in coming back on, I dont come on saying things most of the time unless I need help or have something to help with, I have learnt quite alot on macks from this board, aswell as the trucks that I have stripped and the research I have had to do to convert a flintstone six cylinder twin stick to a 1970s R700 with a V8 and a 20 speed spicer, it has been a interesting build with current the brakes giving me more hell than the rest of the build. now with the gearbox, is it a ratchety type noise? I had an issue with a 18speed spicer and found if I did all the changes in neutral, it went quiet, I am not entirely sure on the 15 speeds, do they have a splitter (1/2 gears?) try all changes in neutral even the hi lo, dont pre select anything.
