  1. The original concept of seniority both union and non union was to reward a worker for having worked for a period of years at a company and  presumably helped them prosper. Also in a job that requires a level of physical labor and or stress(trucking) as a person becomes older, seniority enables them to earn a load or position that is easier! A straight drop in Indy,as opposed to a six way split in NYC! Lol  I support  organized labor as it was originally intended,a living wage, safe working conditions, and retirement benefits etc. To be quite honest in many cases the "benefits" have gotten out of hand! Around the time the steel industry left America for good a USW got one weeks vacation for every year worked! So a 20 year employee  Got  five months paid vacation! I think that's a bit much! I'm not saying the union drove  the steel companies out of America, those cheap third world wages (that caused China to surpass the U.S. in GNP) were the main factor, but in some cases they did contribute! Also some work rules that required an extra employee where one wasn't  needed didn't help! An in law of mine worked for Otis Elevator, any time they had an " open hole" meaning an elevator opening without an elevator rather than put a screen or barrier across the opening a man had to guard it all night when nobody was working!

  2. The second bunk on a"michigan train" is where he keeps the tire man! Speaking of "tire men" right after hurricane Andrew, virtually every tri axle dump truck in America was in Dade county,Florida all d.o.t.inspections were suspended if it could make it under its own power to fl.it was sold for 3 times it's value! All the roads were covered with glass, metal scraps, and nails!every major intersection had at least one tire repair truck, just waiting! There were lines of trucks as far as the eye could see waiting to dump! At 50bucks an hr around the clock

Trailer. Or... flatbed freight outta Utah being as scarce as it used to be someone might want a load to get them to there next partial.

  3. Those of us who actually drove  over the road know they took a lot of liberties with tractor types in convoy! Looks like some Hollywood type went to a truck auction and bought the cheapest trucks he could find.that r model day cab with the "kangaroo guard" looks like an oilfield truck

Is that r model a "compound" if so I wonder if Kris actually drove it?knowing him he probably did! I'm pretty sure Chuck Napier drove the f model in "moonfire"  it was a "compound" as was Richard egan's r model.I'm doing a survey... What was the stupidest "trucker"movie ever? I'm voting on white line fever!

  5. Timmy b, you saw that episode where they rolled the "hemi under glass" briefly I wondered if they "staged" that, but I don't think so,that car's too valuable plus the dude that owns it has to be pushing80 yrs old too much chance of serious injury  of him and Jay! Have you seen the videos of that car running from the 70's? It has  a Plexiglas window on the drivers floor so he can see the track when he's  doing those 6 foot  wheelstands ! I actually owned a65 barracuda. Paid 25 bucks for it! Had a slant six automatic.the only way it'd do a wheelstand is if you jacked up the front end!,

41 Chevy were you referring to the hemi under glass rollover when u mentioned  it's good to have a sturdy roll cage?

      BillyT

Hey,Timmy b,the "Hemi under glass" was featured in Hot Rod magazine in the late 60's,70's but I forget the exact driveline configuration, not much room for drv, shft u joints etc! Had to have SOMETHING to compensate for movement, can't just bolt the whole powertrain solid. The slant six had a performance option(four barrel carb, etc.) But  it sounds like you're referring to a small hemi v/8. The smallest hemi I know of stateside was a341, I had one in a Desoto coupe 1955 model. Toyota built a hemi for their  medium duty tks,Saw a couple in "yank" street  rods looks like a  mopar  motor.

Timmy b,totally unrelated subject! My grandson has a bearded Dragon as a pet, supposedly a native of the Australian desert.Do you see them running all over the place, like we have squirrels and rabbits in our backyards in America? Really cool lizard, very tame you can put it on you're t shirt and it will stay there while you walk around!

  6. Timmy, those loaded trailers have always been  hard on fuel economy! But the empty ones are hard on earnings! LOL 😁 Had a temporary solution when hurricane Andrew hit S.Florida, they paid us the same to bring roof insulation to Miami that they paid us to deadbeat back to La grange Ga to get them more insulation! Was temporary, obviously, hurricane Andrew like most natural disasters created many millionaires! Every junk tri axle dump in America doubled in price and was on its way to Miami! Was a windfall for truck tire repairmen also as the nails and debris on the ground destroyed truck tires!

  7. Took me a minute to get the jist of your comment! (I'm old) I personally refuse to own a smart phone I have no need for 300 "friends" I've never met! I realize they are fascinating I also realize that the many members who are contractors have to have one (their customers expect it) but every time some idiot walks into me while talking on one or I'm in a doctor's office and every person waiting is staring at one like a zombie I long for the days when I ran several small businesses with a double entry ledger and a #2 pencil! They've already put the local bookstore out of business, libraries will be next. Ok my rant is over!

it took me a second as well, it was part of why i found it funny. i resisted the smart phone thing for a very long time, i have one now but my use/ability to use it. is fairly limited. if i didn't have some customers that want to communicate by text message i probably would still have a flip phone. my other half still does not have a smart phone.

  8. Topo, does your military tractor have an Allison? Most of the deuce and a halfs, and five ton tractors in the military did. They seemed to have a pause between shifts, then a big clunk as the thing caught caught!we're very reliable but got terrible fuel economy so the otr companies didn't use them. Is  it a multi fuel?,always liked the way they looked. Some guy near me in Florida was using one for a daily driver! Was for sale on Craig's list.

    1. topo

      topo

BillyT  no Allison .It had a multi fuel till I lost a piston I repowered with a ENDT 673 P I have the 5 speed direct when loaded you can use the transfer case to split shift

  9. Two questions for anyone who has the answers. What was the last non computerized Mack? And if you bought that Diamond T glider kit built in Hershey Pa,could you put an older "pre emission" engine and tranny in it like a 300maxidyne and not be held to 2017 emissions standards? I'm not gonna do it,but I'm hearing all the problems you guys have with late model emissions compliant trucks.I'm thinking a glider might be the answer.Do these modern trucks get such improved fuel economy as to justify all the b.s. computers an sensors that drive up maintenance costs?

  10. Unless I am mistaken u models came  out in66 ,same as r  models the company I hauled steel for used  u and r models, day cabs.237 maxidynes .I  didn't like the long  crooked shift levers on the u,but they backed up easier. The company started buying f model sleeper cabs around the time I left. Figures!

  11. Used to haul 3  military humvees, they weigh about 8000lbs look on the load board ,in a t.s. for a flatbed with ramps and a light load going east.If the rates are still as cheap outta Utah as they used to be you might find someone! Obviously he would need room on the t

R models were made for a long time should be a lot of"interchange"  on the doors,I'd try some truck salvage yards, possibly away from the coast as salt is hard on steel parts.Or you could get really lucky and find one off an RL700 I believe they were aluminum! Good luck!

Gotta rant on a subject you will all agree on!! How often do you get 100 percent agreement on anything!  Question "when is a truck not a truck"? Read a ladies comment in Consumer Reports today. She  Was saying that her seatbelt use and the air bags and "crumple zones in her late model minivan probably saved her life. Who can't agree with that certainly not me! I quote "A truck pulled out in front of me"! Define "truck" madam! I promise you 90percent of the85 percent non trucker subscribers are picturing a thundering 18 wheeler with a criminal sociopath at the wheel!! Since she didn't elaborate, here are a few potential scenarios: A pickup, a straight truck under 26000gvw therefore requiring no cdl, the same straight truck with an undocumented immigrant at the wheel( since they are permitted to receive a drivers license including an interpreter) in many states! If you require an interpreter, how do you read the road signs? I've got a buddy down the road who is a legal Cuban immigrant whose dad spent 11 yrs in Castro's prison, and I used to load in Miami where the foreman, another legal immigrant gave me his impeccably maintained 64 Chevrolet to go get takeout food. So I'm not anti immigrant just anti illegal immigrant! The media has been using the word truck for years to describe many vehicles that don't fit OUR definition of " truck" because it  evokes the average citizens bias against large usually professionally driven vehicles. My favorite example of this is familiar to most of you who run the Southeast, I believe it's on I 65 in Kentucky there was a school bus crash where all or most of the children burned to death I have tears in my eyes 30 years later just thinking of it! Well the state of Kentucky initially put up a memorial saying it was a  "truck bus crash" Well the truck was a Toyota p.u with some drunken asshole at the wheel and the trucking  industry complained so avidly that they changed the sign!

Ever see one of those ads on tv " Involved in a semi trailer accident," call (insert name of one of the hundreds of "ambulance chasing" law firms) The vast majority of major carriers will settle out of court even if they aren't at fault! Barring really obvious cases (proven dui or drug use by the claimant etc) Than face  a jury! Due to todays level of anti truck bias! Truck involved accident cases are a law firms gold mine!

  13. Welcome Bucks 25!

  14. Well the fire truck I posted about being stolen in the Tampa Bay area has been recovered! According to the news bulletin, the mentally deficient thief paid 300 dollars to have another man's 56 Ford fire truck towed to the thiefs location and then in another slick move posted it on E Bay! There being so many 56 Ford fire trucks on the market it wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb! Lol

fxfymn on the subject of safety,I've been watching our local garbage contractor when they pick up our trash, and the helper always rides on the back step of the packer as the driver backs up to the stop or when driving to the next stop. I'd be willing to bet that this is against company policy, but if the helper had to walk up to the cab and back from the cab to the garbage cans at every stop he would wear himself out and add a significant amount of time to the run! This practice would be noticeably safer if the truck had a some sort of a cage on the rear of the truck that the helper could lean into so if the driver hit a bump the helper wouldn't be thrown off! I suspect that the reason this device isn't on the trucks is it would encourage the helper to do something he's not allowed to do but everyone including mgmt knows he does! Sorta a "catch 22" deal! I also wonder if the helper is denied workmans  comp. If he's injured when riding on the back of the truck! Can you members in the refuse business give me any input?

Whites t.s was one of my "must stop" locations since 1974, Must be about the third generation of whites now.the late owner Dave White was into motocross racing and has one of the best firearm and knife collections I've seen! Also have a good cafeteria with home style food,Also had  a couple of antique motorcycles.Worth seeing if you have the chance!

  18. Who makes the GAZ 66 4by4 ? Is that a pickup or a big truck? Do you get American "reality shows" in Moscow ? If so have you seen "Cuban Chrome"?

      Vladislav

Hi, GAZ-66 is a medium class military vehicle. It was produced from 70's to 90's at GAZ plant in Russia. v8 gasser COE, usually universal military body, van, or different equipment carrier. Might be equipped with mechanical winch. Sorry for the poor foto. I doubt there any American reality show are translated overhere. Some local ones could be catched by TV. Although they aren't my cup of tea. I don't watch TV at all. Just don't have antenna or a cable:)
