So work finally slowed down enough to do a little work on my R model. Previous owner had disconnected the heater core at some time and the windshield wipers were not working. I found an actual radiator shop (hard to find these days) that recored the heater core for me. I had bought a new wiper pivot assembly from Watts about a year and half ago so I put it in and found that the pins for the wiper transmission arms were spaced 1/4" further apart than the original ones so that wouldn't work. The original wasn't actually that worn, the wiper motor was a mess though. I called Rome truck parts and they had a rebuild kit for $22 so I figured I didn't have much to lose trying to rebuild it myself. The inside of the motor was well gunked up with rust oil and crap but cleaned up well. After putting the internal cam valve in wrong about 3-4 times I got it working. Put it back on truck and it works like newish. Going to do the heater box over and repaint the interior next. I looked everywhere for a rattle can that would come close to the green interior color, found a paint code on another thread that NAPA mixed up for me yesterday in a spray can ($24!) and it was pretty close. This morning a friend stopped by and said that the original color looked like Detroit Alpine Green. I had a can of can of engine paint in the cabinet and son of a bitch it's a perfect match. I learn something new every day which means I have to forget something else to make room in my limited brain.. Hoping to get a new paint job and new air seat in her by May. The bright green paint on the heater cover was a reject and had to remove it.

Sorry about your Mom, Randy. Mine passed 1/9/19 dementia also . 4-5 years of my father caring for here full time and the last year spent in a hospital bed in the living room.

Thanks Paul. Just had a local radiator shop recore mine Friday. Wasn't too expensive but it also wasn't only 87 bucks either.

Has anyone bought a new heater cure for a steel dash R model lately? Can't seem to come up with anything online.

Old school 100 year old moving company. Been renting my shop from them for 14 years, decent people to deal with. They were pretty much 100% IH fleet. 1 more year and that truck could get antique plates on it.

That's my landlord's truck. I don't think it's seen much use lately as they shut down the moving business and concentrated on real estate.

Jim, that's not a dump truck, it's a sign truck just look what is on the back.

This truck turned out to be really nice to use and live with so I sent it out to have the oilpan changed since it was getting rusty and porous. Got it back, put about 80 miles on it and the 50k original miles engine that ran amazing started rapping, squeaking, misfiring and smoking. Mechanic that did the pan said no possible way they did anything to it. So pulled valve cover, everthing ok there,no water in oil, no pressure in the crankcase, still had good oil pressure but woul barely run. All the noise was from #8 so we changed the injector, no better. Looked on Craigslist and found a 52k original miles truck that the rust termites had wiped out payed 800 for it. Got 225 in scrap for what was left plus 6 very good tires and a rebuilt 4l80e with 1000 miles on it so it wasn't a bad deal. We swapped the new motor in, replaced front body mounts and brackets and put a better set of sheet metal from another parts truck I picked up. Truck runs great now hoping it stays that way. Hopefully will be painting it before Christmas. If I ever need an oilpan again I'll do it myself. Probably do a post mortem on the old motor in a few weeks curious to see what I'll find.

Tarp didn't get the lifespan I was hoping for due to wind getting under it. It only took a year for work to slow down enough to finally get to making doors for this thing. 2 14x17 frames on barn door tracks. 5 inch square tube 48 feet long. I'll need to attach the excess tarp tothe cross beam next week and it should be pretty well buttoned up.

Did you end up using the fuel tank I got for it?

That'll buff right out.

Herbie called me to measure my R model to see if it would fit in the trailer. He takes very good care of everybody. He drove my R up from NJ when I bought it. He's been a very good friend over the years.

Is yours an A140 or A160?

Here's my 57. I think yours is actually a 58 as IH went to stacked headlights in 59. They would title the truck in the year it was sold so, If it was a 59 it was a leftover. If the IH emblem is gold it makes it a 57 (IH golden anniversary 1957)

Is that the truck that was shipped down from RI in a Daley and Wanzer trailer?

That thing is sprocketed for highway travel I believe over 60mph. That's some singin' chains at that speed. Restored by Dave Mauro now owned by his son Patrick.
