Few years back, the shop I use worked on a 427 for a fellow. He just built the motor himself, but had "noises" at start up. They get it apart and find all the rods were loose. No one torqued them? Uh, it was a time bomb. After going through the whole thing, it was good to go. I'm stupid anal about procedures and going step by step. I start over if I think I screwed up. I'm the same way in the wagon. I have a routine I follow. If I get interrupted. I start over no matter. The hardest decision is putting the oil pan on a motor. No easily going back LOL!!

They make a can opener kind of deal. Spins around the top using a wheel to cut the can open.

The shop I use is overly anal. That is why I get 19 years from a block. I had 6 years on this build and when I pulled it apart the bearings looked like I put them in yesterday. Nothing out of place. All I've done it change oil every spring(cut filter apart to check for anything extra). Haven't had to check valve lash for 3 yrs. I used to check it, but found that it's never out. I quit checking it. Yes, this block will get the fine tooth comb. Everything, everywhere. My crank/rods are getting magged this week. New pistons already in. Will be file fitting stuff this Saturday, plus more block prep. New pistons are within a couple grams of old ones, so no re balancing needed(cost cutting). Of course the shop is not the cheapest, but the motors stay together. I have friends that complain about the cost(of doing it right). But will have to build a couple engines a year by cutting corners. I'm still scratching my head of that even after decades of watching it happen. Stubborn, bull headed? Don't know why, but it goes on. I do get "good guy" deals on stuff and others don't. Comes from being a good customer/friend for 30 yrs. Some people don't see the true value. I wouldn't trust any "factory" built motor. At least not at the power level you are working at.

Mack Superliner RC 1/14
Freightrain replied to Divino Silva's topic in Mack Scale Model and Diecast Corner
"Joe" built a B model cab for someone years back. I used to follow his builds on a long lost forum for R/C trucks. I watched the video and it was mentioned it was a built by Joe, so that confirms it. Here is his Ebay store: https://www.ebay.com/str/semijoestruckshop I've purchased a few things for my King Hauler years back. I have pictures on computer at home. -
Old motor coming out: New parts.... Roughing the bores to size: Hope to see what the heads look soon. They went to Fox Lake for a CNC program. They were around 300 cfm on the intake with just some hand work back in '98 when I bought them. They say it should be in the 360 cfm range now.

Mack Superliner RC 1/14
Freightrain replied to Divino Silva's topic in Mack Scale Model and Diecast Corner
The Tamiya King Hauler is not really that far off. Though it is not suppose to mimic any real truck, I think with some artistic license you could make it look like a Superliner. I've lurked around on a few R/C sites that guys have built custom cabs for their 1/14 scale chassis. Some of the work is amazing!! This is one site: https://www.scale4x4rc.org/forums/index.php They a have a section just for big trucks. I've never seen a 1/14 scale Mack cab available. I know there is quite the selection of resin cast for 1/25 scale. -
Well, I tend to make my stuff last. I'm just a poor bracket racer. I found water in the oil when I was doing my pretrip after unloading a few months ago. I put it back in the trailer and brought it home to investigate. I put head gaskets on it, but one pass and it was missing at 1000 ft mark. I knew it was more hurt then head gaskets. All my buddies were all upset. I told them it lasted 19 years and the valve covers haven't been off in 3 yrs. It is all still in one piece, so I'm not crying. The new block was not really in the cards, but I just figured WTH and bought it. I'm working deals on stuff to upgrade what I can. The shop doing the work is cutting me slack on lots of stuff and getting things ready ASAP so I can get back out. Though I've been using them for 30 yrs, so we're good friends.

Cool. Like I said, the event has prospered some since the earlier events. Kinda just rat rods making fun runs and some rockabilly bands playing. I took the wagon and ran, but once I lost I packed up and left because the temperature was really hot that day and I was miserable. DW42 is quite a nice place now with lots more parking area then before it was "rebuilt". Though only porta pots for bathrooms, they ran out of money before any other facilities were built. It is a work in progress. I still call it my home track, though we don't run there much anymore. As for the motor? I only got 19 seasons out of that factory block. Geez. LOL!! I haven't pressure checked it yet, there is something wrong with #1, but nothing visual. I sleeved #4 18 yrs ago when it ate a carb screw and cracked it. The block is 3/4 filled from back then also. I put 427 cross bolt caps on it(it was an NOS 1973 428 block service). I'll fix it up once I have the car running. It will still be a good piece for sometime later.

Oh, you coming to the RocknRace? i know it's an oldies thing, but didn't realize they brought gassers in. I've only been to one of those events, and that was like 12 yrs ago? Back in its early days. The basic crowd was rat rods, not much for real race cars. I stayed the afternoon and packed up. Keep me in the loop if you are coming. Be glad to help out or whatever. The UMTR got cancelled from Thompson that weekend due to rain Friday. It was a swamp and they didn't want another 50 cars on the property getting stuck in the mud. I might not have mentioned here, but I hurt my block last month. Cracked #1. Instead of fixing, I ordered a new BBM 427 block. Building a 496ci motor now. Getting the old Edelbrock heads CNC'd(finally). Should boost the HP a touch. Not concerned, whatever it makes, it makes. I'll be file fitting rings this Saturday. Hope to start assembly the following weekend? Maybe. Ordering new camshaft. The shop is pushing it through as fast as possible to get me back out. Hope to have it ready by end of August. Sorry for the thread HIjack...................back to our regularly scheduled program.............

Minutes away, literally. At a dragstrip I suppose? I see Dragway 42 has a AA/GS gasser madness event this coming Saturday. That is about 45 minutes west of me. Used to race there weekly.

oil change after 30 years sitting
Freightrain replied to binderbob's topic in Engine and Transmission
I'd watch picking them up. The pages might be all stuck together................Ewwwwwwww. All these years and I'm still waiting to find that broke down VW bus full of cheerleaders................LMAO!!!!! -
If you are trying to match it to touch up, take the bunk vent cover to your local shop and have it scanned(or drive the truck, your option). That will get you very close. You can then touch a dab on the cover(or some place) to see if it matches(easy to wipe off before drying).
-
Start soaking it. I would then start fabbing up some kind of homemade wrench to get ahold of the adapter out around the pins. That way you can't hurt the adapter itself. Some pipe with notches cut to fit the pins? Weld it to something you can use a 1" breaker bar on, or just weld a long bar on? Then heat and start turning. What is the adapter size? Big diameter? Length? Pin sizes? If you can't make it, maybe someone come up with pieces to help.

ENDT-675 , 12 Valve Jacobs (Jake) Engine Brake
Freightrain replied to tenfive0's topic in Parts Wanted
The Mack is a small cubic inch, low HP, low compression engine, thus it has very little braking effect compared to a bigger Cummins or Cat. My 673 had a block heater. Never needed it, even when it was parked outside the first couple winters. It would start, unaided(no ether) even at near single digits. I was thoroughly amazed. Yes, I had good batteries in it, and it would build some heat and fire off. I removed it once I put the spin on filters(new mount was in the way). It's in the garage all winter so it is not necessary to have one. It was brutal to get that threaded plug out, took some heat and chiseling. Do with the truck as you please. You should hear the grief I got for putting an air starter on mine!! OR air steering? OR Jakes, or....(whatever I chose next). Build it to your liking. -
My B got hit
Freightrain replied to Reddd's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Welcome to the forums. Sorry about the bad luck at the show. There are plenty of parts to be had. Check the For Sale forums here. Mike(Superdog) is the resident B model parts guy with a very large collection of parts trucks in Iowa. -

I was thinking the EXACT same thing as I was reading Yardo's post. Then I scrolled down and saw this. Perfect. Mack Tech, agree. Seems the wacko's aren't everywhere(yet). We don't have issues in my town for the most part. People mind their P's/Q's and go on with life. I have not seen anything on local news about protesting. Save the day when it happens! -
My $500 dollar find!!!!
Freightrain replied to superliner23's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
You lucky squirrel!!! -
That Wisconsin storm rolled through NE Ohio yesterday morning. I had buddies at a race up by the lake and they posted videos. WOW>....they got hammered. The track was washed out, things torn up. I was one hour south and nothing here. Woke up this morning to no a/c! Seems the furnace blower motor is tuckered out. Ugh. I got it running, but need to come up with new motor PRONTO! I'm going to get the house cooled down then pull the motor and try to get some oil in the bearings to help milk it along.

ENDT-675 , 12 Valve Jacobs (Jake) Engine Brake
Freightrain replied to tenfive0's topic in Parts Wanted
I gathered up pieces and put them on my 237. Noticeable function. Not drastic, but for my truck/trailer it does hold it well on the hills I deal with. No riding the brakes anymore. Yes, cost effectiveness? Eh, like mentioned, not great, but I'm happy enough with them. If you find them, make sure everything is there. Many of the pieces are NLA from Mack(like lash caps), especially the older large valve stem motors(like mine). I had to go to Facebook and ask around. I got the needed parts given to me from a random person. Facebook can be a good thing. -
Wow...had to zoom in. Seems strange?

1972 CF-600 Tachometer Cable * ENDT 675 Engine.
Freightrain replied to tenfive0's topic in Engine and Transmission
My 237 came from a C cab. The tach attaches the same place as my old 673 NA motor. Look in front/below of the injection pump, right behind the front of the engine. Should have a place to attach cable on the accy drive for the air compressor. Found a good picture showing the blue tach cable: This is my old 673 motor, but it is the same set up. -
Drove something similar many years back. Ryder rental. 427/5spd/2 spd rear. Gas was still way less then a buck a gallon!!
-
Back when I stretched my truck, my local little yard had a collection of small tanks that I picked from. Likely late model, aluminum, push in air fittings with mounting studs welded on for easy attachment(no straps). 7-8" dia, 2 ft+ long.
