I own a 1962 B61T with an endt 673. Shop was idling truck checking for air leaks when motor shut down on its own as if you had shut it down. No type of unusual noise noticed.  When trying to restart would not crank over and battery terminals  became red hot. Further inspection determined that something had locked up everything including the drive train. Tried pulling but rear tires were locked.Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

anyone check to see if engine had oil i it. engine seized ??  a diesel will not just shut down without cause, thanks JoJo , checking for air leaks with engine running ??  normally a mechanic will put shop air to system so as to listen for leaks . hope this shop is reputable / not looking for a customer screwing.

I can't remember if it was Glenn or Junkyard Dan, who said a Spicer type clutch can tighten up if not locked ( lock tang not bolted in after an adjustment) to the point the engine can't turn? I have never seen it and have to think about what he was saying, something about it spinning the adjustment until the T/O bearing is jammed against the transmission.

It would be a "reach" for me to think this is what happened, but if all else checks out, look in the clutch housing.

I still think something seized in the engine, but none of us were there when it happened.

This is an odd one..  Is the transmission stuck between gears , and the clutch is out of adjustment so it's locked up ? Did it just stop running or slowly die out ? Was it loading with fuel and it hydro locked? Im grabbing at straws....

Bud,  i dont know what to think. Without trying to be a jerk,,  My very first thought was that this shop doesnt know how to work with a truck of this era..  a computer truck would have shut itself off.  Todays new diesel guys arent taught abought mechanical diesels because the time to educate that is time that can be used to get them to be good with a laptop for diagnostics. The new guys dont know any better..

Well, there’s a lot of them around. Unfortunately, most of them need to be gone through. He might be lucky. Maybe one hole froze up on him. Parts are out there. You just have to search a little bit. Good luck. Hope it’s not anything you can’t handle…. Bob

First of all I want to thank everyone for their input and suggestions.Sure appreciate it. Couple of updates. Oil was drained and found to be clean with no metal detected Starter removed and still would not turn with bar on flywheel. And bar and socket was tried on front of engine. Truck is at a body/repair shop  that also changed air lines all hoses and belts. Not truly diesel mechanics. Yes the truck was just idling out of gear and shut down like you had manually shut it down No unusual noise or sound. Would not turn over when attempted to start. Locked. I was not familiar with Hydro lock till it was mentioned in this post. I understand water through the air intake could be one culprit to cause hydroloc. The truck had been parked outside with the air cleaner off due to body work and we have had rain.  Now I wonder if this is a possible cause. Any input would be welcomed. Thanks

Depending on the amount of rain, would say unlikely for hydro lock

However it is possible, especially if were it was unlucky enough to have the aircleaner fully removed and the down pipe running into the motor

However I believe it was running,  and just stopped while running so to me that rules out hydro locked

Since you had the air cleaner off with the truck out in the weather, you might have something other than a hydraulic lock. It is possible that some critter found your air intake to be a good place to stash seeds or nuts or something like that. As your truck sat idling it sucked them in and compressed them as much as it could until it killed the engine. I actually had a similar problem with a Thermodyne once. I would suggest that you pull the valve covers and check to see if your valves move freely (the ones that should be free). I found thin pancakes of cherry pits on top of the pistons in my engine, just enough to keep it from turning. Strange, but true. Good luck.

1-  if the unit was running then shut down that MIGHT  eliminate the critters involvement. locked up from the get go ; blame critters. 2- "mechanics" unsure of what they are doing pulling unit :which may have parking brake not maxis unless changed over 3- when in doubt drop drive shaft , then manually attempt engine turning with socket/ bar go forth then go backth.. 4- possible critter involve on a B pull intake manifold or AT LEAST  check intake pipe.. 5- anyone check see if it ran out of fuel / dirty fuel filter. 6 - i'd go with one issue (shut down) complicated by lack of knowledge by "mechanics. 7- pulling valve covers by unsure "mechanic " could result in a bigger problem. 8 I was going with a seized starter till it was mentioned starter had been removed. 9- I have seen a spicer clutch loose it's wedge lock and screw things up :: dime to doughnut that's not this issue.

I have never seen it, but it was mentioned by one of the two I mentioned, both people have a ton of experience, so if they say something, I take notice. They have seen things that most have not.

Very hard to diagnose from a keyboard, something that would jump out, for one of us, might not for others and therefore don't get mentioned.

IF it is seized, and will not turn, then break it into sections, drop the drive shaft and see if the trans output shaft will turn with the trans in neutral.

If it turns at the output but not the input, it could be a jammed counter shaft or seized engine.
