You might be surprised recores are still available for very old equipment… bob

In the late 2000's I had my 1942 re-cored, and the core was still an orderable item. When I had my Marmon re-cored a few years later, it was a "custom core", move forward to a few years ago, and my good semi-local radiator shop is gone.

Everybody around here used to take their radiator to Evans Radiator shop on Camel avenue in Lynchburg, but now they're gone. There was 2 brothers, one ran the radiator shop, the other one ran the store next door. My father in law liked the store because you could get good salted fish there.

When I needed to get the radiator on the big green International that runs now fixed there was only 2 places that I found anywhere near here that still worked on radiators, one was in Harrisonburg the other was in Danville. Nowadays on the newer stuff the plastic radiator leaks- put a radiator on it.

And the guy I found in Danville was in his 70's or 80's, only worked until noon a few days a week, so you know he's probably not going to be doing it at all too much longer.

And, I remember way back when I was young, many years ago, a man said he could fix any radiator if the tubes were leaking, no matter how bad it leaked, and would guarantee it would stop leaking. What he would do is take body putty and press it through around the leak. I never tried it myself, but he said he had done several like that. I can see where it would work though.

Producer of poorly photo-chopped pictures since 1999.

Back when I did my Low-Fow Cummins  rebuild, the engine kit (Interstate McBee) out of chassie kit was around $1500 and the re-cored 1500 sq in radiator was $2100! That just doesn't seam like it should be.

However I could pull Parley's canyon in the summer with a full load, no problem.

The repair seeped water out over the following day, so it's not perfect, but enough to start test running the truck.

The shop I went to 15 years ago for a tractor rad is no longer in business, but there's another one also 30 minutes from me.

when i do rad repairs like that i  first clean the tubes to be soldered REAL GOOD. then crimp the tube off. lastly apply a good dose of flux, then finally solder it.

when you are up to your armpits in alligators,

it is hard to remember you only came in to drain the swamp..

Everything today is junk.. used to be back then all was junk, compared to years before..  i think that after 2000 ,  everything really became junk.  Nothing lasts 20 years anymore..  crazy.. we are supposed to reduce, reuse, recycle,   but everything goes to the dump because its cheaper to buy new then fix what you have..  Its terrible. It also means that the human brain doesnt need to learn how to fix things, just throw it out and buy a new one...  Sad.....

Soldering radiators became a lot easier and more successful for me when I began to use a small hand held sandblaster like this one -Zendex Tool - SpeedBlaster Portable Media Blaster in Red - Handheld Sand Blaster Gun Kit for Air Compressor - Extended Use Fast and Powerful Sandblasting Gun - Amazon.com

It does a great job of getting the tubes really clean , which is the secret to having your solder stay where you want it. If you can solder your tubes shut, you don't need a radiator shop.

question I have == for new knowledge ONLY  __:::: when using to sandblast things such as you did on a radiator :: how crucial is the sand going into the cores.?? how did you prevent an issue ???
