Packer Posted February 28, 2010 Share Posted February 28, 2010 Here I was, minding my own busness - - -!1971 Mack RL700L335 Cummins with Jake brakeMack 18 speed QuadraplexMack 44,000 lb Diffs and camelback suspentionAir ride seat10.00 X 22 tires on aluminum wheelsThe tires on back are 10.00 X 22 with two never-been-mounted 11.00 X 24.5 drive tires!!Starts and runs!!! Packer Posted February 28, 2010 Author Share Posted February 28, 2010 The PLAN was to drive the Dodge to California, load the pick-up on the trailer and go home.Yes, it started.Yes, it runs good.Yes, it stops, and all fluids were good.No, there were no lights.No, there was no belt on the alternator.(fixed that)After putzing around 'til dark, I loaded the Mack and got out of there.This truck is going to be my toy hauler.I've found two Sleepers (5 footers) and one or the other will be on it.Don't know if it will stay with all three axles.Two should be plenty.I do need an Aluminum Tank - - - 60 gal size, if there is one to be had.And if it becomes two axle, I'll need a front axle with brakes.And that Dodge only had to pull the Mack 1,000 miles.Averaged 9 miles per gallon, but wore the back tires somewhat!!!!(Somewhat - - -???? What was I thinking?)PackerThat truck will require a Rockwell FF-901 series front steer axle. A standard Mack steer axle will not work as the spring spacing is incorrect. I'd think the axle will be easier to locate out your way rather than back east due to popularity at the time. I'd get front brakes on it regardless if it were mine.
