  1. Funny. But they didn't have those til 55.
  2. The MB looks nice and solid. Drove one for years, didn't look great but all around a nice truck to drive, easy in and out and turned on a dime. Underrated unit, and don't see many these days. I hope it sells.
  3. Funny. As bearucratic as NY state is the DMV is very good. VIN is the B##T#### and she didn't blink an eye. Did not have to verify or trace, but showed her a picture of the tag. They don't title before 1971?, but do a transferable registration. For GVW she looked up the B75Ts she could find and told me how they were registered. Everywhere from 10,000 to 80,000 lbs.
  4. Amazing that was I there all along, but maybe it bounced off the ring gear a few times but was too big to get caught up in anything. Scary, huh. Nice to see you were able to get it all together and congrats on the new higher speed!
  5. Exactly. Just more complexity, dates to track, expenses, etc., etc., Like I said , I feel for the older guys trying to make a living.
  6. I read iron NY DMV section on CDL questions. Not so much worried about passing (actually feel bad for some of the guys making a living with some health problems, Dr. said she is failing or conditionally flagging a lot of guys now), but it's just another thing to track, e-mail, etc. Figured some guys in the hobby might be interested in understanding this better. As a hobby I think we could easily find ourselves more and more regulated (how many politicians understand what we do). If than regulate weedwackers how long til they decide no one should run a 50 yr old engine anymore). Sorry, try to avoid politics but ...
  7. I have had my CDL for 33 years (time flies!), and now really only keep it for the hobby (some say keep it, some say no need but another topic). A few years back they started requiring me to get a medical card (before I only carried in my wallet when I drove commmerically) which was only an eye test after my routine physical. But now as you know it is a more formal process, requiring out of pocket expense ($150 per exam not covered by insurance), mailing forms etc. I noticed today on the NY DMV site (actually hate to say something positive about DMV but they are pretty good here), that you can self-identify as "excepted" which does not require a medical card. Excepted is farmers, school buses, "transporting corpses", "emergency propane deliveries", etc.. As I am mainly keeping my license for now to avoid having to re-test etc. down the road, would it make sense to be "excepted" until I need a CDL again (I only drive my tractor as a straight truck, registered as historic under 20K pounds). Any thoughts, what are you folks doing about this (more you retired and semi retired folks, realize you can't do this as a professional driver...). Thanks.
  8. There are still good glass guys who will cut what you need. I found a reasonable guy with talent literally ten minutes from home. The independent guys (in business a while) rather than chain shops seem a better bet. The Mack Museum will send detailed drawings (another great service) but they were for an engineer. The old timers will trace it and cut what you need.
  9. Nice. Thanks for sharing. Love that winch unit with the monster daytons!
  10. Very cool! So ugly it's nice to look at. One piece windshield, probably not bad to drive at all. What's the "V-63"?
  11. Great story. Love the "custom" paint. Can't beat the authentic detail. Nice!
  12. Looks like a nice show. Every year? Westfield is pretty easy to get to from much of the NE. Yeah, shaping up to be a colorful fall here too.
  13. Nice Chevy. Funny how much a Superliner cab looks like an R model cab. Anyone know how much is interchangeable?
  14. Amazing how clear those old pictures are. Love seeing those AC's in their original setting. Monsters compared to most of the Fords, Chevy's, etc. of the day. Thanks for sharing.
  15. Nice. I think you've made some nice progress and should be a versatile unit. Hard to tell from the pics, not a concave cab?
  16. B tanks? Almost like R tanks but a B cab and doors? Yeah a lot of work but nicely put together. Why is another story, but again to each his own
  17. Pat first glance looked like a fire rescue unit. Would be a nice service truck or even a handy truck to support a small hobby. Any more info on the drivetrain? Yeah how do they get to the scrappers ?
  18. Very cool. RD-800's? The tri-axle is a monster alright. Thanks for sharing
  19. PS - whatever brakes make sure they are good. Maxi's are very reliable and safe, but all must be maintained well and adjusted properly. First investment I made was new brakes on both rear axles (no front brakes on my 59) - money well spent.
  20. Welcome to the hobby. Lots of opinions and many ways to go. Original. Unrestored. Stock. Upgraded etc. good body is important but some look terrible in pictures but are real solid. Some have nice paint but rust bubbling up right under the surface. Single axle or tandem? Day cab or sleeper? Work truck or tractor? What are you looking for? Dayton wheels (spokes where just the tire and rim come off) or Budds (solid wheel like a car, lots of choices, steel or aluminum) 70 series - big exposed aluminum radiator. Cabs - on the 70 series you can get the rounded B cab or what folks call the "L" cab just like the older LJ series. Do you like tinkering, turning a wrench, or just driving? As Mike said everything is expensive but there are lots of used parts if you look, but NOS can be crazy expensive. Know what you want and look at a lot to learn before you buy. The higher price between each level can be a big savings in the long run. Look forward to hearing and seeing details of your search - pictures are always welcome! Good luck!
  21. Very cool. Seems a deal, would be a nice promo truck for a cement company. Or, hate, hate to say it but you could buy it and scrap the drum towards trans costs. Sorry though, hate seeing working stuff scrapped. Nice find.
  22. They are hard to find in good shape. Short bed 4x4 is a great look and pretty sought after. What he paid is probably not relevant, but money talks when the conversation gets serious. The "little" stuff gets costly unless you're a DIY 're. If you want 4x4 transportation find a late 90's blazer w/ 4.3 in good shape. They're out there and don't go for much, cheap and easy to fix (disclaimer, I'm a GM & Mack only guy). If you want a project I wouldn't give up but he is stuck. The misc. stuff is going to cost him a few hundred and the surging thing probably not expensive for a DIY but a time consuming PITA to figure out and perhaps fix. If you want it make a fair offer cash and leave your number. But the guys are right, if you don't want a project I'd go for newer and more mainstream.
