Did they have the plastic dash in 1974? I thought they went to that later
-
Was the air for pressurizing the fuel? Pressurizing the fuel tank then counting the drops when the pump gets into the right position? I've never spill timed anything but the process seems cool
-
Spill timing can seem like magic but it shouldn't really be all that hard with the right tools and knowhow. Engine should run better too since the timing moves a bit after the gears wear in

I didn't know that about the Cummins low flow engines. I know that they were mostly hated around here in tractors, they seemed to go through fan belts frequently and you'd have to keep the radiators sterile to keep them cool. The weird oil thermostats they put on Cummins later weren't much liked either

Got around to getting that tire off. What do I look for steering and kingpin wise while it's off? It felt good but I don't really know what I'm looking for Edit: I don't have a proper "truck jack" so what's the safest way to do this? Two bottle Jacks was all I had at the time -
I've heard a bad throughout/input shaft bearing can do weird stuff like that too. Pulling the transmission top cover off first like Joey said seems to be the best way forward. -Good luck

Are F700 and R700 similar chassis? Almost odd to see such an Aussie spec truck here in America, wish that had a vid of it running that would be sweet! Edit: Awesome Farr air cleaner too!

I used to think that same thing until I got a truck with a Mack 6 speed (twin stick). You somehow are always in the right gear and have plenty of power without doing as much shifting. Biggest problem is at 2,000rpm doing 60, 45mph at 1600 is just right but I don't do much highway driving.

That's right it was you Bob. I don't know if grain pups are different but the ones I have seen don't seem to have a detachable "5th wheel" like LTL companies use. This is more of what I am looking for -

A couple other odd questions I've been meaning to ask are; will reversing in top gear harm anything? Rather than turn around in the field (got stuck once) I've opted to back up the 1/4 mile to where it's close to what's being cut. I know these 6 speed mack transmissions are pretty tough but will shifting through the gears in reverse cause any damage long term? The other question is about pup trailers (doubles? I'm not sure what they are called elsewhere) I want to get one for this truck but I've never driven anything with a pup trailer, what are they like? do they pull hard? I thought I remember someone on this site worked for FedEx at a time and pulled doubles but don't remember who. -

The tire shop a few towns over has one 10.00-20 radial tire left in stock so I'll take this one off and bring it over there. Two 10.00-20 spare tires came with the truck but I'd feel more comfortable with those going on the back. Thanks for the suggestions everyone, lots of good info here to keep in mind. -
I've never seen a 15 speed in anything but old oilfield stuff and haven't ever driven one. I can see why 15 speeds fell out of favor, same with super 10s.

Next time I go to the truck junkyard I'll ask about this -

Local tire guys won't touch it and looking at the date code it says its from 2003 so I don't think I could get any warrantee on it. It's a Hankook Korean tire, the PO said they had a blowout on that side a few years back and not sure what shop he brought it to. These are Budd style wheels? -

Another harvest injury is this bumper got pretty bent out of shape. Needs taken off and straightened but I can't decide what color to paint it back too. Red? White? throw that tiny thing out and get a big chrome one? (I wish) I know a lot of guys would just tuck something like this in the shed and only bring it out to shows but even the antique things have to earn their keep every once in awhile -

Well that's a bummer thing to wake up to: Very glad this didn't happen during harvest and thankfully it wasn't a blowout but what sucks is this steer tire is only a couple years old. I have no idea what style of rim this is with a lock ring like that (is it tubeless?), but it looks like they either had a hard time getting it off or back on from all the marks (probably is what caused the damage to the sidewall In the first place) The tire shop is only a few blocks away so I'll see what they say in the morning (hope they see the big L on the stud and not cause anymore damage) You old guys can laugh at me all you want but these old school locking rings and inner tubes are like alien technology to me! -

Tomorrow should be our last day cutting if everything goes right. The local elevator filled up so we'll have to haul to the next town over, It might be quite the race to keep up. The last load of the night is always fun. The look of the glowing orange bulldog at the end of that long hood is unforgettable! -

Idle is dead on then, just feels too low after the first start of the day. Feels fine when warm Let's see other questions I have: I noticed this sticker and didn't know these were positive ground truck from the factory. Any reason why that is? I thought that went out of style in the 1950s or so, I have not even looked to see if this truck is still positive ground but I guess its something to keep in mind: Another problem was I lost power steering a few days back and thought the fluid was low but the hydraulic cylinder had come loose. Now I had gotten the truck suck in the field and had to be pulled out so it could have popped off then but I didn't notice or remember. I cleaned it up and tightened the clamp bolt and it hasn't happened since but it's still odd to me. Seems like it flops around more then it should so maybe it needs an adjustment or those joint replaced -

Here are a couple: Say what should the normal idle be on a 2V E6 like this? It feels a bit low where it is now, but I need to get a new hand throttle so I can run my PTO a bit faster so maybe that will take care of it. On the subject of hand throttles what are the ones you can fine adjust by twisting them called? Aircraft use something similar but I've seen them in trucks too -

Well sorry I didn't take any pictures but hauled my first loads in with the Mack today. My last load was 60,000lbs with about 640 bushels of wheat on the back. Rides fantastic with a load on it, just need a pup trailer to really haul some grain. -

I'm not too sure about that Hino emissions scandal either. To me it seems like Cummins (or whomever) wanted 100% of the small truck market so they paid some people off to get rid of Hino, notice we only hear about foreign companys having emissions scandals like VW? In any case Hino really made some quality truck in their day from what I've heard, its a shame -
R Model w/3208?
BOBWhite replied to Jeff M's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Haven't been around the 903 much, seen a couple in Versatile tractors but heard most farmers didn't like em. 855 was much better on torque and fuel. They made the 903s for a lot longer though, did they use the same PT fuel system as the 855? Only place V style diesels found a place on the farm was in combines and silage choppers. Claas uses V8 and V12 Mercedes and MAN engines, and now John Deere has started using German V12 Liebherr engines in their choppers. -
R Model w/3208?
BOBWhite replied to Jeff M's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Not fair to compare it with those engines, they came out way later. The first iterations of the 3208 came out in the late 60s and Cat didn't stop production till the 90s. I can't really think of another motor that size that was available in the 70s Did cummins have anything before the 8.3? Detroit and Cat were really the only ones that offered diesels to replace the 50s gas engines at that time
