Not an R700, Not Even a Mack
1961H67 replied to Joseph Cummings's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
The 318 was put in this LTH in Alaska,,in the 60s ,, Easy start in the cold climate. Yes I grew up about 1/2 mile from I-40 , I remember the common Sound in the 70s , dropping 3 gears on the slightest hill . These young people are amazed by what it is. Some time I’ll post some history of this truck, hopefully I’m on the home stretch with the LJ . Thanks for all the pictures of the old working trucks -

I came through here yesterday, this is I40 , Black Mt NC . Eastern Continental Divide, about 30 inches of rain fell on the divide and followed it from the NC/SC line all the way up to the NC/VA line ,, it literally “ Melted “ the top of Mountains . It covered all 3 west bound lanes here for a few days. -

Nice toys!, Same here, spent yesterday winterizing ,,, I put the flooded Charger ( we gutted it out) on the back of the H Model and backed it in the shed till spring. Yes a Barndominium would be a dream come true for us vehicle collectors. Stamp collecting would have been a much easier hobby!,, -

It probably could be restored but it does have a good bit of rust on the fenders and around the nose, it’s a good parts truck, I’m going to gut the doors ( but leave them on the truck) I’m thinking of taking the air tank out of the sleeper and air starter off of it and put it on my H Model one day,, I grew up with that sound and I don’t have a truck with air start, and it’s all there,, but I’ve got more important things to worry about for a while. Gathering materials for a bridge to our shop is top priority. I just had an opportunity to get this parts truck before it got scrapped. -

After cleaning and laying out all the stuff I had that didn’t get washed away, ( a lot of the internal door and window hardware, because I had it all on a work bench and they got washed down the creek) I found a complete H Model with good vent windows and all the door hardware still intact, so I purchased the whole truck for parts, My Helper and Me went and hauled it in today, hopefully I can move along with the LJ now. -
Separate the frame and bogies
1961H67 replied to hicrop10's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
It will make a more detailed job, plus you can get the sand out of all the hidden areas. Paint it separate and throw you some new bolts in it when you reassemble , that’s the icing on the cake. -

Back on the LJ , I’m making a wiring harness for the headlights and Turn signals, balancing time cleaning around the shop, and hauling equipment. A lot more of the parts stores and restaurants are destroyed. The River is full of trailers and shipping containers,, little league ball fields trashed for a long time. The glass shop that cut my Mack mirror glass is completely gone,, just a pile of blocks. -

Talked to the fellow that owned the local bolt store, it’s a mess also, ( pictured):Told him about losing a lot of stainless bolts I had bought for the LJ , A group of us may go help him get some of his inventory into some shipping containers. ( he’s a small business and he has a eye surgery coming up ) it sure was nice to jump in the car and go get some bolts 10 minutes away. I also took a dozer up near Mt Mitchell today where the Hurricane slammed in the mountains,,, The CSX / Clinchfield Railroad got hit hard! -

Making some progress on the flood cleanup ( No help at all from any government agency, like every one in this valley we have filled out every application possible,,, still waiting) Hopefully we have what is left of the tools cleaned up and put back in the boxes, now start working on the shop walls and doors, slow process,, Many thanks to a LOT of people who have helped out. -
Superliner 1 steering
1961H67 replied to Outbehindthebarn's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
You’re right , it is very narrow up front, I had 1 Older Super Liner with the box on the axle. I’ve never seen a setup like that, it looks like a Shepherd box, I guess you could change the front axle and mount a plate on the frame to bolt the box to, maybe that is what the brace is for under the frame. I did similar on my H Model, I installed a PS box from a S series IHC , I cut the section of frame from the donor truck and bolted it to my H Model frame and made a brace . I screenshot your Super Liner picture of what I think is the add on brace,, Unsure if it is a aftermarket kit or a homemade.- 1 reply

I found them, one is useable, the other is bent, it got washed under the truck, I think I might have a decent one. I haven’t had time to look at all them yet. -

The North Carolina DMV says it is trying to find the records of the original owner,, Hopefully that will solve the mystery,, It’s very close to the original paint scheme,, no matter who’s it was it’s definitely different. I’m plugging away at cleaning up the shop and trying to get the fenders on before it gets too cold.My “ Sidekick has to go back to school Friday, they finally ( after 3 weeks) got power and water,, They’re places around here that won’t have power until next year sometime -

Mack MB transmission
1961H67 replied to chuckholes's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
While the transmission subject has been brought up, I have 2 , 10 speed Duplex transmissions if anyone wants them, they were good, but they got washed around in the flood and I’m sure they will have to be flushed out or maybe taken apart. I’ll probably take them to the salvage yard if no one wants them. -
I’ll let you drive it! It’s very easy maneuver around.

These things were everywhere in the middle 70s when I first got my license, just about every trucking company in Charlotte & Winston Salem ran them,, When they flooded the market with them when the Rs took over, I bought one for $2000 , That was the going price. ( My Dad in the late 60s ) -
