  1. My .02 You have to hold the housing still when you remove the bolts that hold the arm to the trunnion. If you don't some times the diff will spring back when all tension is removed. Then your fighting bolting up and locating the new arm.
  2. Figures......never happens when you want it to...
  3. Another thought... If you pull the air cleaner out, have someone rev the engine and listen to the sound as the revs fall. We had a old r model that had a bad cam and you could hear the slight intermittent miss. That truck also backfired sometimes..
  4. Just throwing this out there...I had a backfire issue in a cat motor a day after an injector cup failed. Cups faild ,Filled coolant with fuel and drove 150 miles to a dealer. new cups installed next day, ran fine bob tail, idled fine...I hooked up to trailer and as soon as I got up to about 45mph it started to back fire badly...fire out the stack bad.... Limped 5 miles back to dealer and they did an injector cut out test. Fount 2 bad injectors and a bad jake solenoid. they think the water in the fuel was part to blame and the backfiring killed the jake. Almost sounds like an injector is fireing out of time or fuel is lighting off in the exhaust. If its a electrical issue that will be hard to find unless you can read and record the engine data logs in real time...
  5. Worn bearings... Won't know untill it's taken apart...
  6. contact Ray (MACK MHe9) he moves lots of stuff for us board members. He has a step deck.
  7. N&W 1218 the Y class mallet was slightly more powerful than the big boys. But the big boys had more speed and were more popular.
  8. Just look at the pic someone used for the R model that does not do it justice. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mack_R_series on a side note its been 10 years that the last standard "R" has been built. it will soon be the next "b" model ;(
  9. yea it was cool to meet them last night. I Spoke with a tuskeege airman. shook hands of most of the vets. one family was telling me that their dad had recently showed them a picture he took of a concentration camp that he helped liberate. She Said the pic showed the Jews just standing at the fence looking for help. He had never shared that photo with his family until about a year ago.
  10. Anyone been to one of these events? For those that dont know there is a fairly new WWII memorial in D.C. The Honor flight group sets up trips all across the US to send WWII vets to see the memorial. They put on a big show for the old guys and if anything lets them know that people still care about their dedicated service. I Went to one last night in Chicago and it was pretty cool to see all the people that come out to support the WWII vets. Got to meet a tuskegee airman and a family that was waiting for there grandfather to return on the flight. got to talking and they showed me a pic he had saved when he liberated a concentration camp. it was very touching to the hart to see how patriotic some people can be. I first heard about it eary this year when my grandfather signed up. Sadly he passed away before he could make the trip. Its Worth checking out.... http://www.honorflight.org/ http://www.honorflightchicago.org/
  11. it might be a 300"L" (low rpm motor) cuts about 300 RPM off the normal 2100 max rpm...
  12. Also how about a pic of the gasket and the top of the block bottom of head...it may help if we can see the parts...
  13. Staxx ... Am I correct in saying the head gasket seals to the bottom of the head and top of fire rings?. And does the e6 have a spec for the liner height? If the liners were to low or bad fire rings the water can flow right in..I know he did not mess with liners but they may be out of spec? ..it's been about 6 years sence I had a head off...and don't have my book here...
  14. Did u models have an option for air ride cabs?
  15. Let me know if you find a boot. I need one just for the window. I hear you can get stuff from an rv store that will work but have not shopped around yet...
  16. If I recall apl lines had helped set this up if you notice all the containers were apl... I got to see this loco once when it came near Chicago...was very impressive. I have seen the challenger that's parked in north platt NB and want to stop to seethe bid boy and ddx40 as you enter the state on I-80. The up tower in north platt is worth a stop if your heading that way. I think it's the countrys largest rail yard.? I'm heading to Baltimore next week I plan to stop at the b&o museum. They have lots of steam locos to view...
  17. Mount locations. Push or pull style clutch. Fitment of misc parts on the frame rail. Regardless. It should be a fairly easy swap.
  18. How are you prepping the sleeper for paint... I picked up a able body but it has lots of corission. Debating weather to put new skins on or try to sandblast it and skim coat the bad spots...
  19. im just trying to think if water can get into the intake easy. but you said that all holes were filled and you did not crank so that means at least a few cyl would have had the valves shut and would not let water in those holes??? so again that would bring it back to the head gasket. I guess if the heads check out OK you can re install them and do a pressure check on each cyl and see if air is escaping past the gasket or liner? it sounds like the leak will be noticable if its filling all 6 holes.... FYI... keep them holes oiled down well now that water got down on the pistons. I would dump a 1/4 qt of oil in each hole and let it soak back into the rings/pan or just put some WD40 in them . keep us posted !
  20. Are you saying it had an auto trans with a quad behind it...LOL never heard of that tried before???? Here are some options that will work great with that engine. 12 speed mack 9 speed mack 13 speed mack Eaton 8LL eaton fuller 13 speed but....we need to know 2 things 1)what rear end ratio do you have now? 2)is that EM7 a "low rpm" engine? All the transmissions I listed have diffrent over drive and first gear ratios. Going fast is easy to do... going fast and being able to pull a load thru thick clay in a low gear is where proper gearing vs RPM is key. without knowing your rear end ratio and max RPM im just shoting in the dark. But we can help, just get us those 2 questions answered and we can go from there..
  21. man... 611 needs to get back out on the rails. I would love to see NW611 and the Y6 mallet make a return to the rails some day. they are some of the nicest and biggest locos that are operational but sidlined due to FRA regs or lack of intrest by its owners. here is a vid I took of SP 4449 a few years back coming through roundout IL on its way back from the big steam convention in MI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYFs2J7f648
  22. if all were full that has to be a head gasket issue or the deck hight had to much liner protrusion. I have helped rebuild old mack diesles but never did the liner removal install. Im thinking that the liners were not set right and water was able to sneak past the gasket or top of liner??? but this is a question that someone with first hand experince can help more with. was there water in the oil pan as well?
  23. A Little gang bang amungst friends is ok just as long as your willy does not get near the hole I'm in..and don't stand behind me while you wait for your turn... Lmao...
