That local Bar is sounding pretty possible here! Worst Case scenario news Bro . Sorry man! No the overhaul will be more than the truck is worth in my opinion Its bad enough you have what you have! That job there DEPENING on the damage is going to be 30 40 grand a big hole to dig out of Don't add insult to injury! unfortunately all the fuzz and contaminates can fall into the pan! price a reman engine and weigh the two off! 30 40 grand vs reman short block or long block! this way you have I believe 2 year a warranty on the whole shmeer!! and less down time! And don't forget you will likely be buying a compressor drive gear and clutch ect! This way your adding value to the truck as well! if you decide to flog it! It Will have value if the warranty is transferable! Again My opinion!

Yup good on you For posting your fix! All these type of posts spread the wealth of knowledge of stuff to try when chasing down issues like this! The post indicates that the injector was stuck open in my brain compression being pushed back into the fuel system! GOOD JOB! -
You make a mighty fine point there Joe taking full gears changes your pause time between gears ! My self( NOT A TRUCK DRIVER) never have to wind up in the lower gears and never split the lower gears just take full gears for the first get it rolling stage Engine brake usually off simplifies the double clutch or wait time for me I usually just stick not clutch !That said the trucks are usually MT or a tractor! a loaded truck changes the program a bit as does using the engine brake! however.............! Vid would be good in this case ! It may be a case of driver training in that case don't look to me for advice! Me dumb like stick when it comes to truck driving!CLUELESS 🤣

Good Call RED!

Tried that trick with an allison in a hayes log truck once wrench when flyin under the bench! Can't feather an allison either in or out!
-
Worth checking! Once flew from our town to a remote community on the main land prepared to do a range pack in the woods. Got there tighten the yoke bolt and flew back home. 8 hr service call to tighten a bolt. That’s why I mentioned it ! Could save an expensive situation!😅
-
Ran across this twice got lucky i suppose! just thru it out there!🤣
-
We found the range pack would fail on the low side more often than not! Also check the trans yoke bolt for tightness they some times work loose! also the double shifter boot caused issues of popping it out on the main box on some units! just something else to look at! Just sayin!
-
So it sounds like the range clutch pack could be toast ! ARE YOU PRESELECTING THE RANGE SHIFT? MANDITORY Bro! I or are you are grinding on the split
-
yup dogs breakfast on that there bro!
-
Yup you need a mack/ eaton trans bellhousing mounts on the trans for E9 or any Mack engine any 18 speed fuller pulled from a Mack will fit behind an E9 you may have to alter the clutch cable mount and arm! ! Western star and Mack had similar ideas on engine mounts however Mack Mounts are better ! Way easier to remove than Star in most cases due to the clutch arm on the star!!

Is the code gone? Can't help much with out more info! You may have a bad injector ! try crackin injection lines one at a time see which one does not effect the engine rpms! post all of your symptoms is the engine smoking if so what colour is the smoke!?

fjh replied to wes flaharty's topic in Engine and Transmission
So heres what I suggest first ! Next time this happens don't touch a thing ! How ever check to see if the heater fan still works! If not you have a weak accessory relay !Top of the list is check the codes! post what you find! what your purposing to do would help to have a donor truck or you have donor engine or buy you injection lines linkage bla bla a bunch of subtle stuff you don't think about! -

Yup all about the money! I stopped by our place today they say that they lost another pair of guys to a Volvo trash machine outlet! Now have 3 technicians and 8 apprentices imagine the quality of work leaving the shop! Mean while you have to teach morals as well as mechanics to these lazy shits that don’t care about nothing but the pay cheque! Couldn’t even think about going back to that environment! -

These gaskets are garbage ! I have said many times these guys thru out all the good Mack ideas instead of using them! The egr oring on the aset was a perfect example if you must recycle exhaust gas this was perfect oring and flange to do the job! Engine mounts another good example ! Nothing simple about any of the Volvo trash ideas! You said it in your previous post there should be a law! -

I did not have much to do with red engines ! Work wise that said I did however have input into how they were diagnosed! You simply have to try and pay attention to what you hear and see and apply some old school no how! The water trick can be used to find exhaust and head gasket leaks you can’t see as well!if it’s making a sound try and change the sound! -

The pressure builds both directions so the closed valve actually helps build pressure by spooling the turbo at lower rpm’s I believe! -

Yup for those unfamiliar! the best way to find those is to do a regen get the squeal going if the truck will allow you to and pour some hot water over the suspect area’s and listen for the sound to change! At least that’s how our guys tracked these down! -

This here is entirely experience based Crap shoot! start with what you know and see and what you don't! if the egr valve opens on command and the cooler is not cloged and the differential pressure sensor and venturi tube are clear and show to be working on the screen ! then you might want to tri the turbo first! BUT ITS A pricey nuke! It all depends on which ammo you choose to load the canon with and in what order ! You tend to try to use the cheapest part first ! However Had he pulled on the turbo first and tried it it likely would have saved all these other parts ! BUT its the most costly so you hope for the best by starting cheap ! Its a total crap shoot Unfortunately! there is nothing in this trouble shooting chart on this other than experience ,good logic and your best guess and good intentions! Sad but true! -

Agreed! These turbos can choke up with carbon and stick sum times only when hot then won't stroke out enough to make heat! And then Just compound the problem with more carbon! -
