A,  B model that i updated had an inner seal, and the outer bearing was greased, the inner was oil bathed. Hence the seal you have.. post a picture of inside the hub.

Joey wasn.t the greased and oiled bearings just the other way around, outer was oil from end of spindle and greased was the inside bearing?    terry:MackLogo: i have ran into this on a old gas mack .

Other may have better advice, Mack's are not my strong suite.

Take the brake shoes and spring to your local parts house. get relined shoes and hardware kit.

One broken spring will likely mean others are not far behind.

Shoes that have soaked in oil for a long time likely can't be cleaned.

Being it is that old, you may have to have your shoes relined, but IIRC they are cast, so should be no problem.

Look at the other wheels, if you have to get re-lined shoes, might as well get them all done at once, rather than piece-meal.

So far I've only been stumped once on a spring. I have been able to get all the spec's but no springs.

Not sure this is what you have or not, but is shows not only the shoes are available but the worth of the "Core" ! Don't let the cores disappear without a receipt for them!

and with all this going on all these little guys can come up with,,,,is dad,,,weres our snacks

Yeah I  guess your right

And your thinking, is it to early for a bevy (drink)

Well it is now, still dark out side

I have been offline for a few days as apparently a cracked phone screen and diesel don't mix

However I'm back now spinning cocktails the wrong direction down under

Onto a  more serious note

Seals

I'm no expert so I'll offer some worthless opinions

Yes it has a wear ring

Talk of wedding bands makes very nervous, so I won't go there, once is scary enough

I reckon that band is mild steel and is used when you don't use a grit gaurd to take up the different gap

740-GritGuard_800_540x540.jpg.4b4216058620452d7ebe5bf70db06088.jpg

The grit gaurd is the bit on the bottom, if some joker has got every last mile out of it before pulling stumps on the old seal and replacing it, I think your looking at the remaining bit as the rest wore away

I reckon they went to the local parts store, armed with measurements and the seal in there is the result

And Bob, they either didn't clean the drum and spider up or it was leaking for a long time before you owned it

So your definitely not unlucky, I think a dud repaire was done last time and your seeing result of this

My bucket of bolts was far worse than this once and now I wouldn't hesitate driving it anywhere now, a bit of money and a lotta work

The good news is you can still get these seal kits easily, just need to know your axle rating, as in how many pounds and the kit should be able to worked out from there

Brake springs, no drama

Just get as close as you can and it should apples

Oh, if it was my truck, while it's this far apart I would drop the S cam out. Reseal it, make sure the S cam is straightish. Get the slack adjuster in a vice and wind it around and around while pumping it with grease until all the dry old grease is out

I usually pump mine with diesel and then re grease

When it's re assembled, the brakes should snap back otofwhenffrom when they are on, fixing a dragging brake on the side of the road os no fun

Anyway, I'll leave it in your capable hands
