Dean had the most photographed truck at our show Saturday. The ATHS awarded Dean Jenkins with their achievement award for being in the industry for than 50 years. From left to right Dean's wife Claudette, Grandson Dawson, Dean Jenkins, Brocky, and Palmetto Upstate chapter president Brad Osteen.

Took the LJ to our Church car Show today It was the one year anniversary of the hurricane, a lot of progress has been made and a lot has to be done . The LJ got 2nd place in the truck category, not bad since half the people have no clue what it was!

Thanks for the comments! It was a great turnout for a local community event, plus they were having a C10 show in Cherokee. I started to bring my 55 Chevrolet but I thought it was fitting to bring the LJ since it was in the flood.

We got the last truck show of the year in today,, great weather and show in Cherokee NC , good to talk to everyone. Its going to be time to put them away for the winter,, My Grandson and Me have had fun with the LJ this summer, hopefully we can do some next year, we took the LTH along today , it was a all day trip,, Rolling in at Sunset.

Dean, It was great to visit with you again, and the explanation / history of the name 10-Tucky.. It was the first time I had looked over the LTH with the hood open. By the space in front of the fan I am surprised it only had an 8V71 not a 12V71, especially with the loads it hauled to Prudehoe Bay..

It definitely has room for a 12V71 , They replaced the original Cummins with the 318 in the early 60s ( as ge did with all the trucks he took to Alaska) They hauled those D7s to Fairbanks in the winter of 64 with it when the Yukon River was frozen hard because there wasn’t a bridge until later . I’ll have to post the history on it and a few pictures when I get a cold rainy day. It’s an interesting old truck.

Please tel us more about the Prudehoe Bay truck.We did watch Ice Road Truckers over here and while it got a bit silly at times the trucks and the road were very intetesting...

I’ll put some pictures on my phone and put the history with them,, It was one of the first ICE road trucks. I have also seen videos of some special built Mack’s up there back before the Dalton Highway was built,, I have talked to several people who worked in Prudehoe Bay with Mr Miller it was nothing like ICE road truckers ,, it was brutal.

I did not watch most of the Ice Road shows as there was too much "sensationalism/drama" to make it realistic. When we were in Alaska I only went about 50 miles north of Fairbanks and saw a little of the pipeline. I was not crazy enough to tackle that much dirt road!!! The 120 miles of dirt road between Tok AK  and Dawson YK was enough.. The old Just Old Trucks website had a poster who had run Prudehoe Bay in the winter and some of the storys he told were awesome.

I’m like you I like the trucks but there was too much drama. I knew nothing about Alaska before I found this truck, I’ve never been there. I got most of my information from John C Millers nephew, he got the truck after Mr Miller passed away and had worked with him on the North Slope. The road they took in 1964 was not where the Dalton Hwy is today, they circled around the mountains with those dozers dragging all that equipment. Matthew Lindsey’s Father knew John C Miller . Maybe I’ll start with the history of this truck from when it was built and work up to the Alaska history because it’s actually had 4 lives from one extreme to the other.

Dean, I will make an author out of you yet!!! A new career?? Please start a new topic about the LTH. Like Australia, the Alaskan trip in 2013 was another lifetime adventure. When we decided to go to the ATHS show in Yakima Wash it was a no brainer to continue on up. We took the inland channel ferry from Bellingham Wash to Haines AK then drove the Alcan to Tok AK then southwest to Anchorage and back north to Fairbanks then the Alcan back down to Tok then East on the only road (120 miles of dirt) to Dawson YK then south to Whitehorse and the Alcan on south and back into the states in Montana. There are many museums to visit along the way. 15K miles in 6 weeks.. 

I am now 80 and I highly recommend the those of you in retirement to do your traveling while you are in your early 70's as now I cannot ride or walk that well.

we had a blast up there last year   breath taking scenery and lots of wild life on sightsee boat   not a big fan of snow,,or cold air,,,,wife dragged me up there,,,but im glad i went,,bob

Bob, Were you folks on one of the Cruises???? They have to stay out in the ocean more than the ferry. Also their port time is NOT always long enough to see the museums.. I recommend a boat or fly one way and rent a small motor home the other way. We did the motel bit and sometimes they are 100 miles apart!! All of Alaska's major highway have multiple pull offs to spend the night in an RV.

Yeah, Brocky we booked everything through Norwegian cruises. It was 10 Gs for the entire trip, but we had unlimited alcohol food and Starbucks. I was ordering nothing but caramel ribbon crunch. All you have to do is show them your card. Everything was paid for the ship was huge, and the hospitality on the boat was outstanding. The entire crew look like they were Filipino, but everyone was overly friendly. Not sure if they’re nationality, but they were all really dark and very short even at 5 foot seven I was usually taller than them.

We did not travel very far up Alaska and half the time I really didn’t even know where I was, but the weather was already chilly end of August. I don’t think I would dare trying to travel any further north I would’ve froze the death. The wife is planning on going back there to Anchorage. I will not be going. Her friend is going to travel with her at least that’s the plan. I’ll stay home with the puppies.
