This is not a pandemic, this is not a financial crisis, this is something that we have created. The United States post World War Two was a global stabilizer, now we are the global destabilizer. And that's a very hard thing to say because I pride ourselves of bringing the leadership and bringing the conversations. Long term I'm less worried about some of these issues but in the short run I'm petrified about some of these issues.

The 145% China tariffs should be painful for Boeing. Did you know only 50% of Boeing aircraft parts are produced in the US?

Coming from China:

AVIC SAC Commercial Aircraft Co. produces the massive aft fuselage sections and vertical fins.

Chengdu Aircraft Industrial Co. produces forward entry doors, automatic over-wing exit doors and vertical fin rudders.

Beijing Beimo produces the brake rotors.

Zhongbeixing Aviation Technology Xianghe produces the landing gear.

“The level of the tariff increases announced so far is significantly larger than anticipated. The same is likely to be true of the economic effects, which will include higher inflation and slower growth. Tariffs are highly likely to generate at least a temporary rise in inflation. The inflationary effects could also be more persistent.”

And that is how China has built a new Chinese passenger jet that looks like a Boeing and Airbus, copy copy copy, it is flying within China, and to North Korea and Russia.

Airbus chose to assemble A320s in Tianjin from 2009. To date, they've produced over 750 aircraft there destined for the Chinese airlines.

The administration is following China's playbook......Given we're a large country market, build here what you sell here. And that's a reasonable request from a large country market, so as to create jobs and share some of the profits.

China's single-aisle COMAC CA919, that you speak of, is full of US and other western components. I suspect the trade war is going to cripple production.

COMAC gained airliner experience from 1986 when McDonnell Douglas with US approval gave them a license to produce the MD82 (second generation DC9). I flew on many China Northern MD82s.

Thanks for the information. I doubt that many people have any real knowledge of what is being produced in China. Many years ago I was offered a position to manage 3 international pineapple broad acre farming, one was in Nanning, China. I declined because my colleague who had the job had kept me informed of the state of affairs in China, it was not pleasant. Zero communications at the farm, this was available in the local village at the party offices. They were flying in risky old Russian aircraft and everything was controlled in minute detail e.g. 1 box of 100 bolts was to air freighted, the box had to opened in our Melbourne office and each bolt countered to ensure there 100 bolts. Every movement of our local managers was closely monitored. The couple from Hawaii who were the onsite farm managers could not socialise with the locals. China has progressed as you have noted and objectively their build local was justified. Except, eventually we have the opposite effect in USA, Australia and Europe. And the cycle will move on.

India is the new world economy that I think will far surpass China in all respects. In 2024, two major Indian airlines have placed firm aircraft orders - Air India, a 100% subsidiary of Tata Group, ordered 500 Boeing jets and the another airline ordered 500 Boeing and 500 Airbus. I understand 25 new airports have been built during the last 7 years. Modi and his team are progressing their country.

I remember many years ago when I was picking up a load at a port somewhere and they were unloading John Deere tractor parts off of a ship. And someone said "but I thought John Deere tractors were made in the U.S.!"

And we were told "they're ASSEMBLED in the US, but all the parts come from overseas".

Im not smart enough to understand stocks.. but my small pile of cash doesnt change.. however, people tell me my money is losing value because the dollar is falling. So,, once again,, i dont understand..  oh well.. 🍻

We put our 401's into IRA's with Wells Fargo Advisers in late 2011. I paid off the last $24k on the house, paid about 1/3 of our Alaska trip, paid  over 1/2 of our Australian trip, bought the 2014 Dodge Ram 3500 plus the required by law distributions out of the fund and we still have more in it that what we put in.

Joey, You must have a 401 account with the county??? Put in at least the percentage they match.. We put in a higher percentage at times between truck payments.. and actually we only had the 401 and company retirement for less than 15 years.. We are not rich, But comfortable.. and so far just the company retirement and Social Security more than covers our monthly expenses without touching the IRA..

Often, you can earn more money not contributing to a 401 but rather investing yourself. And that's even if you invest in mutual funds because you aren't confident with stocks.

How much does your employer match your contribution?
