  1. Life is good. grey haired hippie driver.............. At least you have hair! I told you to stop braggin' about that!
  2. Go to your dealer and get a close shade of green and re-do the whole inside. It will match then My truck is not a show piece, by any stretch. She looks good and I use it. It is what some people call "parade quality" or "calender quality". I have a green dashboard, black wood floor, grey leather bench seat, red on the firewall, and two-tone maroon exterior with silver running boards. The frame has cheap, store brand, black spray paint on it. The exhaust parts that aren't chrome are high temp silver. So,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, go for it!!! enjoy your truck! I drive my truck because I don't think it should be in a jar on the shelf. I like other people to see my truck. The look on little boys faces and the tears in the old-timers eyes is all the satisfaction I need.
  3. I only pick on your mental abilities. I vow to not make fun of your weight issue. That is just wrong and not nice to someone in your condition. I do worry about your health. You need more exercise than runnin' from momma!
  4. As I am not financially gifted like our government, my mileage per year is in the 100 to 150 per year. I change the oil every fall when she goes into winter hibernation. At that rate my grandchildren might get it to 100,000 miles, but by then fossil fuels from dead animals will be illegal. I could have Larry custom cut a cam capable of 7000 RPM with roller lifters so oil issues will be null. Lets see, 3000 RPM in 5th gear = 62mph, then 6000 RPM would be,,,,,, WHOA BABY!!! That would be a fast A-30 . Are 9:00/20 tires speed rated? I could get to your place in not too many minutes!
  5. Are you on the city department? Are they hiring? I have been in EMS for going on 22 years now and was on an FD for 9 years but resigned due to divorce and moved from the area. I welcome you to a great resource . My A-30 is a former fire truck and I have some stuff for it. I would love to put a pump back on the front and kinda make her a relay pumper/hose buggy/utility, because I still like having a flat-bed truck for hauling stuff . Welcome friend PS: Rob is full of BS! Just ask O-Dog
  6. I have seen both types of racing oil. The 10w that you mention and the 20-50 that is more common. I appreciate the help on this. Wanted to get her ready for the holiday parades, but time is against me, oh yea, money too
  7. I read about the racing oils and I don't really want to run a thicker oil. I did a little more research and there are a few more addititves claiming to have the needed ZDDP. I don't know if it is "enough" but in this situation I guess more is better. Granted my flat-head has less than 9000 miles on it and premature wear is not a real big issue, but still is an issue. I have always run Castrol in everything but our Monte Carlo SS, it gets Mobil 1. I thought about putting one qt. of break-in oil in with my regular changes. She holds 9 qts. so I thought about 8 plus 1 break-in. Haven't done it yet as I am still leaning toward the additives.
  8. Not happy!!! I just read a LOT of info about ZDDP being reduced in engine oil. This has been going on since the early '90s. To keep it simple, ZDDP is a form of zinc and some phosphorus, and this provided protection from metal-to-metal wear. The wisdom of the EPA determined that zink and phosphorus were killing catalytic converters. The reduction of ZDDP has been slowly going on and it is not a big issue with newer engines as they have roller cams. The issue is for vehicles with flat-tappet cams (HELLOOOO!!!!) and this reduction will eat your cam! It wont be a rapid death but reports are that wear is greatly increased. The problem lies in that oil and oil additives have SOME of the ZDDP, but my reading warns that it is not enough for older engines! The automobile manufacturers pushed this reduction because they have to warranty a cat for 100,000 miles and they wanted to reduce their chance of paying for new cats! Some diesel oils have more than conventional oil, but still not enough! I only found ONE additive that claims and shows test results that they have enough ZDDP just for this reason (I still use lead additive for my A ) and showed results from others. Engine break-in oils for the performance crowd (Larry) have very high levels but they are only for break-in as the other protection turns to sh!t rapidly. The additive has ZDDP in their name, (that escaped my brain), but can be easily researched. Other forums about vintage cars (even foreign) are just as concerned. I will be buying 2 bottles on Friday. Many people have blamed this rapid cam failure on "poor metalurgy", cheap "lowest bidder" cams and "not recommended oil", any of those sound familiar?
  9. What is the VIN on the tag? Get that and we will all know for sure. Oh ya, PICS-PICS-PICS
  10. Ohio has 65 for trucks and cars on the turnpike only! They are tossing the idea around of raising it for trucks on other interstates because of the "traffic flow" problem.
  11. I believe that is why bulldozers were invented. A bulldozer operater is a lot cheaper than a broken truck, tow bill, parts, labor, etc... what the hell, it's a and could probably have done that all month!
  12. Was that because of what you did to "her" A-40?
  13. I'm going to a new radar school starting the end of this month and will be gone most of June. It is really "out there" in theory due to being completely digital in detection, and filtering of actual "targets", (aircraft), and weather patterns. I've never been around a radar set that is optimized for tracking weather patterns before so this is of interest to me. Rob Just be sure to wear your lead underwear!
  14. Man I feel sorry for you. A good looking daughter with an education and knows how to wrench on trucks ! OK, nevermind , she probably has enough street-smarts that not any a&&hole is gonna get over on her! Worse case is she introduces them to you, or you get a chance to sit on 'em
  15. I saw a tire shop use a bottle jack and piece of chain to remove an inside rim. Looked scarey but it worked . Nothing I would try, but, one guy held the base of the jack on the axle hub. The other guy wrapped a chain through the hand holes, over the post of the jack. The second guy pumped the jack till it bit, and then the first guy got out and he continued to pump till it broke loose. I would be afraid ( as I was then ) of the jack slipping or the rim bending, but, it worked .
  16. If you are looking for easy installation and reliability vs. original looks then go with plastic. You could even look for a cloth cover to put on the plastic and give it that look.
  17. My prayers are with him and his family also.
  18. Hey there counterweight, when are you gonna be in the area again? If you really need a place to keep the B, I could probably make some room in the garage!
  19. I'm sure that a 15' bed would fit but a 16' might be better. You need to have enough overhang of the body for the latches and other hardware. Check on the A-40 what the overhang is and that should give you an idea. I would talk to body builders and see what the recommended hang is. You have the hinge, hardware bar, lights, and other crap to consider. Remember that a bed 16' feet in the air creates a lot of leverage that wants to flip the truck, so stay in the seat Rob "The Counterweight"
  20. The easiest way is to; (1) Measure up the column from the dash 4 (four) inches. (2) At the 4 inch mark wrap the column with masking tape to create an even line. (3) Use Sawzall to cut through using the line made with tape as a guide. (4) Wheel will now come out with little effort.
  21. Firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. Like rob said, sounds like your housing was changed due to age. Easy way to check vacuum leaks is get her running then spray starting fluid around questionable areas, and if the engine revs, bingo.
  22. I live on the edge of Hartville. It is well known for having black muck dirt here. It is not wet, just black. Satellite pics show the black squares really good. If I dig 4" down in my back yard I hit this stuff. Well my neighbor always gets big eyes and plants more than he can handle, me being a good neighbor I always take extra off his hands. Sweet corn(white & yellow) it's called "Bread & Butter", maters, cukes, lettuce, and my favorite the habanero peppers!!
  23. My 1951 truck has the EN330 engine. My distributer tag # is ; Model 1111819. The replacement part number at NAPA for mine is 1111843. The Delco system was used in a lot of engines, tractors, pumps, welders, etc.. Also, a Pertronix conversion is available and that number is 1166. I still cant figure how a reverse rotation would fit because of the drive gear on the camshaft. I am not saying it didn't or implying your wrong, please don't think that, weird s**t happens.
  24. Are you sure it is wrong? I don't know the rotation direction but you could double check the order of your plug wires. I will get you the Delco number off of my truck for you on Sunday. NAPA had a part number for a replacement, I'll look it up also.
  25. GOT 'EM!!!!! Got the last one tonight with some heatin, beatin, and a Bolt-out socket. I swore that last one was gonna snap. Gonna get new ones on Monday and use anti-seize on 'em.
