New Toy / 64' B75
Lmackattack replied to Lmackattack's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
I agree The tanks look like they just need a sanding and they will buff out nicely. The bumper has to go though... The owner said he had been working it. Jacob said he has seen it hauling around town. Owner is getting up there in old age and starting to sell off his stuff. -
With the help of "Jacob Moneymaker" I was able to secure this truck and picked it up last weekend near his home town in AR. Its a 1964 B75 sitting on a 1978 Mack R686 Frame. 285HP Tip turbine with a straight 5 speed 3.87's on 38k camelback Truck needs some new fenders and lots of TLC but it has some cool modifications. It has dual Breathers, one feeds the turbo the other feeds the charge cooler, R model Clutch pedal assy, R model steering column, Spring brakes, It had a cut out for a sit in sleeper and Im thinking about using my Double eagle 36" to put on the back of this. It has AC that was installed under the passenger seat but currently not working. The cab/Hood sits a few inches higher off the frame than a stock B75 and it gives it much better access to stuff under the truck. The double frame was cut to shorten the truck after the sleeper was removed. Depending what I do with it I may re stretch it and clean up the hack job that was done to it when it was shortens. The bumper is going. will likely find a more period correct steel bumper that can be painted. It came with 2 aluminum budd fronts but only one was installed. It has a nice padded interior but it will need to be copied as its showing its age. I was told this truck was semi Restored by a mack dealer and they did most of the modifications? Engine and trans feel Strong. Will need to get the fenders off this weekend to get a better look at it. It was a long 24hr day to get down pick it up and then drive back. I did get to meet Jacob and helped him get his 70's Reo cab over that he bought. Jacob took a quick Vid of the truck as I starting to load it up on the lowboy. Trent

Im just not sold on those titans. They just dont look put together right. Im sure its a nice truck to drive but I think they should have taken more styling clues from across the pond and put it to work here. Just my .02 -

I have worked every week thru winter with just a few days off for weather related or for helping out at my former job expexting my full time gig to be slow right now. Personally I would rather be taking a few weeks off this time of year as thats what I have done the last 13 years but we are busy just like summer time. -

did you see the steel hoods in the Hillside yard? you will spot a old B model in there as well... I was in there last week and saw all of them parked in there tight for the slow season. -
#1 R Model
Lmackattack replied to euclidtc12's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
I have never seen those headlight panel marker lights or that Mack name plate on a early R model. So it must have not lasted very long in production. Very cool and Yes the U was built before the R. -

I have a spare turbine and charge cooler just incase I need one. I have never heard people complain about them failing. And I never had to buy parts for it. -

sad parts stores
Lmackattack replied to Willie dog's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
also cars and trucks of today have 3x more parts bolted to them. The older cars and trucks used alot of interchangeable stuff and were built with fewer less complicated parts. -

i was never really a "parts guy" but I did work for 13 years for a race car parts company. We sold gearboxes, suspension , and other race car spare parts. The worst part about that was that about every few years the race cars would change from one mfg to an other and thus right when you started remembering most of the popular part numbers BAM...a new chassis was released and you had to learn a new car all over again. The other issue was that some of the old classic but still popular race car chassis, such as LOLA Cars U.K just had the old exploded view drawings to go off of. You had to look for the orginal part number then flip to the back of the book to find what model car it was equipped in as the same parts were used in other chassis. after you got all you basic info you had to look for any up dated revision part numbers associated with that number. Were talking old race cars made back in the 1960s thru the1980s. PITA but I will give that company credit as it was very rare we could not find a part number for a old LOLA chassis. -

I went to the pete dealer the other day for some muffler parts and a speedo sensor. I was surprised how well the parts guys were there. Gave them a vin number and the guy rattled off the part number but doubled checked the computer just to make sure. I had not see a parts guy do that for years. turns out he has worked for Pete,IH and other heavy duty part companys for his whole life. -
R Model cab visor
Lmackattack replied to xdudebrahx's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
yep I had that happen as well . its annoying as hell!!! I had a IH with a stanless steel visor do the same thing depending how hot it was out. It even with the center brace installed. Made for some long trips out west in the summer time. And nothing made it stop besides if the temperature dropped. I put a bunge cord on it. stuffed tennis balls between the cab and visor. it just would warp when hot out and vibrate for miles. -

I have driven trucks with and without them. I did notice the wind will make them flex if its real windy out and your on the high way. -

I saw some pics of this truck on facebook.. Looks great. I remember seeing His fleet of R models pass by my neighborhood when I was a kid. I still live about 2 miles from his old yard in Lincolnshire. -
The 5th wheel is a standard height Fontaine that I modified with a bar to pull frameless dump trailers. I never did get around to putting a high mount on so when I pull a Van trailer it is way too close for comfort and if I went thru some twists im sure it would make contact with the fender. If I recall a soda pop can is about the distance between fender and tire with no load on the truck. so yes a 4x4 block will fit between tire and fender. I think the springs squat down about 2" with a good load on it (stock 34K springs) On the truck is low pro 24.5 tires. the size is the same height as a 11R22.5. I never had interference with lowboy, flatbed or dump trailers. I only pulled a van trailer a few times and it was on road only mostly highway but they way I set the fenders up was to be high because the truck was being used for mostly On/off road use. At work im driving a Pete 387 and it has air ride. the fenders sit very close to the tires ....maybe 3.5" off the top of the tires and they dont rub but the axles dont move nearly as much as the Mack does. If I drop the air on the rears i can get 1 finger between the tires and the fender. all the R models I drove with springs were set up for real off road work. they all had fenders mounted higher than what was seen on air ride trucks.
-
same here . You will find that when doing this the fenders will sit higher off the top of the tires than say a truck with air ride. Also be careful with the clearance for the trailer bottom if you have a standard height 5th wheel. here is a pic of how high mine are mounted.(click on it to make it larger)
