  1. "and the $4 billion in purchase deposits that Milton claims to have on hand " Want to bet that a company bank statement to prove this will be as elusive as Obama's birth certificate.!!!! BC Mack
  2. use the copper..!!!.... it can be polished...!!!!! nylon brake tubing will melt with the heat, so for the first connection from the air compressor the teflon lined braided s/steel hose is the most common now but be very careful with radius, if you crack the teflon inside it will soon blow out.. all the hoses must meet FMCSS 106, I use FC300 SAE100R5 braided hose (blue fabric wrap), bit more money but more durable... if you go with nylon tubing it will cost less for sure and be easier to fit but from the bulkhead to the dryer I would go with braided hose just because there is still some heat there.. 3. who needs a licence anyway...!!!!! I drive around all day dodging hoards of Range Rovers and BMW's driven by "visitors" with no jobs and 10 million dollars houses, cops tried to nail them so the gov changed the rules.... they can now trade for a free Canadian licence and use a language translator to process the transaction... no test, no need to identify a road sign, no wonder the rcmp tried to clamp down on it but got their butts spanked. http://www.scmp.com/news/china-insider/article/1496481/canadian-police-agree-let-chinese-drivers-use-mainland-licences?page=all evidently they are "assisting" our economy by coming here and buying everything...!!! just another element to this discussion.... so keep away from Hongcouver, and I'm sure many other cities, if you are a courteous driver...!!!!! but if you are getting too upset with our north american drivers and traffic, go to youtube a look up "russian car crashes".... (sorry Vlad).... and you will see our problem here is far less serious than you thought...!! LOL BC Mack
  4. what j hancock said.... based on your info I am leaning toward them just needing a minor repair. got to ask a dumb question... who has been inspecting/servicing the brakes for the last 30 years? or did you just get it? low mileage vehicles such as fire trucks need a calendar based inspection program added to the normal mileage based items to cover corrosion and like problems. can you take a picture of the caliper so we can determine the brand and era, there may be other issues to consider if the adjusters are odd ball.... 5. the technology has been around in aviation since the 80's... ACAS and TCAS now provide detection and coupled automatic maneuvering away from conflict probably not hard to install in cars... at about 100 grand per car... LOL why not spend resources on better training and testing standards... why not driver re-testing every year..!!!!.... oooh, I heard the bomb drop on that one....!!!! it seems that punishing offenders financially is not improving their ability to drive.... just revenue for the gov.... to upgrade the cars with technology is putting the cart in front of the horse, the upgrading of driver skills is the answer... but does that buy votes??????? BC Mack
  6. they don't come up very often on the regular sale sites, which model is your friend looking for? HD, HDX, COE? check this site out http://www.hayestruckclub.org/ and send Scott McKenzie a message BC Mack
  7. In Canada all new vehicles for many years have drl... however, a recent trend from car manufacturers is to illuminate the dash at night regardless of the lamp switch being off... so... we have a car driven at 5am with drl and dash light on.... but no tail lights why did the manufacturers induce this problem?.... an ergonomic design fail..!!! they sold 'automatic' lights but failed to tell the owner to turn them on...lol I have a 2010 F150 with drl, I have to turn my lights on to get my dash lights, if I drive off without my lights on it is soon obvious to me as the dash is dark as is the radio facia... another thing.... a rant is developing.... when I get up behind these bozos and flash my lights they get all aggressive, or even jamb on the brakes thinking I'm a cop car..!!!! I thought the international driver's code book said.... someone flashes you in the dark means your lights are off..!!!! rant off... but if you want to get me going again let's talk about pedestrians and crosswalk signals..!!! can't fix stupid I suppose BC Mack
  8. my 2 canadian cents.... that's 1.5 american I have a parallel hobby with vintage aircraft.... while it is nice to DIY, there are a significant amount of jobs created by the "1%" who farm out a complete rebuild of a ww2 fighter only to sell it a year later for half the cost of the rebuild... skills are maintained and even old crafts restored... who thought a brand new DH Mosquito would be seen again, now there are two thanks to the trickle down dollars of two billionaires. asking price and selling price are still far from total cost.... you rarely get all your money back... if you don't have the skills or time to create you're own dream car or truck, just buy one, it is far cheaper... just not as much "fun".. there are guys, and gals, out there who just want to drive to a show and display the dream vehicle they built... with their cheque book..!! their money went downstream to the crafts that built it who in the end do benefit us with parts and services now available to us. I'm with most of you, I DIY, and I am happy with a tidy clean truck, not afraid to get it dirty and realise I won't get my labour back out if I sell.... and I'm happy with that. BC Mack
  9. The option for disc brakes is available from every truck, bus and trailer manufacturer.. the buyers seem to be content with old foundation brakes... I've been working on Knorr Bremse brakes since 2007, just about all transit buses and highway coaches use disc brakes today... the capacity and fade resistance is what we install them for... we have 1200 transits, about 70% are now disc brake, all new purchases are to be disc.. as far as maintenance, pad replacement is pretty simple... yes, just like a car... however, there are other inspections that take place at that time so as to confirm serviceability of the caliper and other systems that need to be done. even though the caliper has a provision to visually check the pad wear, on a bus it is simpler to utilise electronic dash info from a sensor built into the caliper... caliper rebuild is more complicated than on a car, especially to piston boots and adjuster system cost benefits?... so far the company seems happy with no increase in per mile costs even though the pads wear faster, about 3 times the rate of shoes, rotors and drums seem to have the same life and cost. for a truck driver, and the dot, all that can be visually examined is the pad wear indicator or condition of rotor, no slacks as the actuator/maxi is directly bolted onto the caliper. for the techies, I have added a link to the component manual... there are many videos on youtube http://aus.hendrickson-intl.com/getattachment/4c5a1926-acc7-4035-aab0-7fcc8265eec3/Knorr-Bremse-Disc-Brake-Service-Manual.aspx,.pdf hope this helps you all get ready for the future..!!! 10. and let's not forget disc brakes.... space shuttle technology to most steering wheel holders :-) BC Mack
  11. air brake systems need to be understood before you delve into trying to fix problems shotgun style... and you need to know how to pre-trip your truck correctly even if you haven't got a CDL or equivalent... here is some good bedtime reading, or in your favourite place of solitude ;-) BC Mack Bendix Air Brake Handbook[1].pdf air brake problem finder.pdf tractor_air_brake_troubleshooting_guide[1].pdf
  12. and bus photos for those that like them... nothing startling from my pov.... BC Mack
  13. I went to a bus industry trade show in town today.... BYD had examples of their all electric transit buses, but surprisingly, tucked in a dark corner was the new T9 electric class 8 semi tractor... no literature, sales people were not sure about it and nothing open to peek into... just photos for you guys. 14. Google away.....!!!! I did work on the 330, a 6 cyl version, you have probably the 220..... very simple engines but usually gutless found a basic manual on-line... they are not common in these parts but the rest of the planet has many of them, UK and Oz most likely good for parts. http://www.numeralkod.com/cross/archivemanuals/detroit engines/220-330-500 operators manual 6se376.pdf http://www.numeralkod.com/cross/archivemanuals/general motors/industrial and marine diesel engines ops manual.pdf http://www.avi-ltd.co.uk/id12.html BC Mack
  15. Paul yes, that's the one.... wonder if it sold and who has it now BC Mack
  16. I seem to remember about 2-3 years ago on BMT a US member had the only one this side of the Atlantic and had it for sale, white and gold?... maybe this member still posts? veterans please help out here... would love a high roof on my MH... and a longer cab.... BC Mack
  17. Gaffer usually refers to the boss or company owner.. a "gaffers lorry" in trucking is mostly used as sarcasm for a cheap boss who orders frugal trucks with low spec cabs just to increase his profits.... often trucks were ordered with Gardner engines for better fuel economy, but for a driver they wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding, a plodder.... there are variables depending on the context, the film industry uses the term too as the head of electrical or lighting on the set... watch the credits and you will see it. no wonder English is the hardest language to learn...!!! BC Mack
  18. I'm mostly in town running a Sprinter van doing bus light repairs, but when one quits at a stop or blows coolant by law and our corporate safety plan I have to park a defined distance behind it, 6 cones have to placed at a regulation distance, I can only exit the van through the side door onto the sidewalk and I have enough orange flashing lights on the roof and rear door to be seen by the space station..!!! but....... the dumb motorists simply pull in behind me and wait... and wait... thinking I'm at a traffic light or something... so, I get out with my equally 'loud' yellow vest on and stand behind the van and point to the flashing lights.!!! and they still don't get it..!!! I was told 45 years ago when I passed my car driving test that this is only the first step to becoming a "driver".... nowadays, the "test" is the end of the process for most on the road. BC Mack
  19. a few pages on this forum's photo pages... http://buzzybeeforum.nl/viewtopic.php?f=423&t=4809 the high roof seems to be a popular model for Dutch Mack fans BC Mack
  20. Saw quite a few F models in the UK in the 70's, most owned by OHS/Contex, a UK/Turkish company that also ran many day cab R's from Istanbul to Germany.. got a photo of one of their rigs from an old driver, Andy.. also, stolen from another site, I think, was a recent magazine article about the very subject you ask... hopefully it can be read ok on here BC Mack
  21. OK.. took a while, well I simply forgot.!!! tried to find pics of those local container trucks with three 20 footers.... will have to resort to Hanks... and so no-one gets upset by me posting Hanky's stuff on BMT I will let you go there yourselves... about 3/4 down the page are two of the trailer combo's being used in town.. 3x20 & 40+20 http://hankstruckforum.com/htforum/index.php?topic=74697.0 not sure if it is three empties, I've seen a few of them all heading for the port..
