So true Brocky. Salisbury closed school early this year because of wind.. Hell... In Maine our bus driver, Ms. Witham would have all of us go to the back seats so she could try to pull the hills with us as weight for better traction. As kids we thought it was cool to do it. Some times she had to back down and try again.  We would cheer her on when she pulled the hill..  ( Lawrence rd. in Gray Maine. 04039)   I laugh here in Central N.C. when they say,   you aint never seen snow like it is here..  anyway...

Our school buses chained up and kept going. I can still "hear" the sound of the 392 and the tire chains. And that was if lived far enough out not to walk (up hill both ways in a snow storm).

They did call off school before the chains were needed on the steer tires tho, softies!

The only time i didnt go-to school back then was because the plow truck hadnt come by yet... that said, i never rode my snow machine to get to school, just to play in the snow.....

You know once apon-a-time the Principle would contact the Police or Highway Dept at 0400. Everyone would talk about it and decide if there was a need to close the schools. Now it's 1600 the day before so it can be streamed on the 1800 news! And the storm is still miles off.    .....Hippy

I don't think it's the buses the school closure is for, It's ALL the parents dropping off-picking up their rug rats. One school it looks like they are putting only half the kids on the buses.    .....Hippy

In the late 60's I worked for a township highway department in Oswego County in the "Lake Effect Snowbelt" of New York State. We plowed 6 inched to a foot of new snow off the roads, sanded them, and the school buses ran on time!!!

Yes, I rode the bus to school until I was old enough to drive. I was the only 6th. grader in school with a driver's license. I'm kidding!

The bus was an International too. I think I rode that same bus the whole time I was in school. But I don't remember any parents bringing their kids to school and picking them up then, at all. Maybe as a once in a while thing, but not every day like you see now. Now I think more parents haul the chern back and forth than school busses do. 

And we would still have to get up at our regularly scheduled time and turn on the radio and listen to WFLO when it was snowing to hear whether school was closed or not.

I was on some site, Might have been here or might have been JOT where one recounted how STUDENTS drove the school buses in their area. It was a big plum of a job with many applying and few getting. Lots of training and one mishap, however minor meant you were gone! Imagine that today!

I remember that too, several students drove school buses when I was in school.

I believe that the students driving busses was a southern thing??? The late Leroy Gurganus of Jasper AL told me about his experiences driving the bus as a high school senior. The only time my parents (and others) drove us to school was when we had been kicked off the bus and had to present ourselves to the principal for disciplinary action.

The guy that made the post I read I believe was from Kansas. Likely more a rural thing.
