In Maine our bus driver, Ms. Witham would have all of us go to the back seats so she could try to pull the hills with us as weight for better traction. As kids we thought it was cool to do it. Some times she had to back down and try again. We would cheer her on when she pulled the hill.. And that was if lived far enough out not to walk (up hill both ways in a snow storm). They did call off school before the chains were needed on the steer tires tho, softies! Everyone would talk about it and decide if there was a need to close the schools. Now it's 1600 the day before so it can be streamed on the 1800 news! We plowed 6 inched to a foot of new snow off the roads, sanded them, and the school buses ran on time!!!
