NP and GN had a few of them to provide passenger and LTL freight service on branch lines where the freight volume was too low to support daily train service. Coles Express of Maine had the idea of putting a passenger compartment on a tractor trailer unit. Haul passengers and freight up and back from the county in the summer. l understand that the lCC would not let them do it because of the train and bus services that were available at the time. At the start of this video the oil tank on the GMC would be removed and the passenger compartment installed. TeamsterGrrrl Posted February 14, 2017 Share Posted February 14, 2017 A lot of railroads ran for hire trucking and bus operations, especially when the ICC still had some power and would force them to provide substitute truck and/or bus service when they abandoned a line. Even today the railroads maintain good sized private fleets- Couple years back when BNSF had to do a lot of rerouting due to flooding they had their "school buses" and even executive jet in use to shuttle crews around! It was according to them used for on site maintenance work, light freight and limited passenger transport. They wanted it for their museum but seller would not agree on money. This is the photo send of bus 9 in 1935, From the windshield back was re bodied. Truck Shop The Museum has a pretty extensive vehicle collection nd was finishing p a full restoration of their 1940 Ford Rail Road Express truck. I figured they might be interested in this unit.
