  1. At first I thought that was a 750 Holmes, but then I saw it was only a single cable. I have a lot of experience on a 750 (double cable/winch) but none on a single cable, dont know how comfy I would be doing heavy truck recoveries or tows on a single hook.......Cars, no problem. Looks like it isnt in too bad of shape, good luck!!!!
  2. Didnt First Gear do a die cast of that Centre Carrier Corp Moving and Storage??? I swear I have one in the far reaches of the darkest location of my closet somewhere....????
  3. Loadstar- First thing. Right now, immediately if not sooner when finished reading this post- get on your email, and send an email to Dale R. Guth at mack.museum@macktrucks.com with the serial number, and tell them you just bought the truck and request copies of any and all files on it. Do it ASAP because as of last week when I filed a request, I got a reply that they were on an 8-week backlog!!!!! Best of luck to you with the new toy.
  4. I concur with this statement. I just dealt with Fred a few months ago, he has a bunch of NOS Waukesha parts, and sold me a full overhaul gasket set for my 140GZ Waukesha. Very nice guy, very knowledgeable.
  5. Where is this located? Bethlehem is right next door to me, and yes there is quite a bit of salt on the roads in the winter. Look at the rear wheel well in the pic- you can see where they cut out and replaced much of the sheet metal once already. That was a common cancer area for many Mack bodies throughout the years, especially the 60's-80's with the shit chinese steel being used. She looks pretty rough but yarnall is correct some rubbing compound and elbow grease may reveal smooth skin.
  6. And, since UP doesnt like to waste any motive power and get every nickel they can by moving revenue freight with whatever power happens to be available, here is a video of Challenger 3985 pulling 145+ cars of freight when returning from a passenger excursion a few years ago. Note how she makes the curve and up the grade without even slowing down, batting an eye or breaking a sweat.
  7. There are no more UP 4-8-8-4 "Big Boys" in operating condition left in existence. As you can imagine, it would cost millions of dollars to bring them up to operational condition- re-tooling the (2) boilers and superheaters alone would cost a few million. HOWEVER...Union Pacific does maintain UP 4-6-6-4 "Challenger" #3985 in full operating condition. The Challengers were the little brothers to the Big Boys. Here are a few videos....
  8. If I went and looked at it with you it would have to be a saturday or a sunday. Where in North Jersey, thats a pretty big place....lol.....If you can make arrangements to get it out, and tell the guy you want to see the pump running and we'll need the water tank full or access to a hydrant with adapters (or a spot where we could draft with hard sleeves, adapters and a nozzle or two) that would also be helpful.
  9. Bob, I have had the pleasure of riding on an excursion train with canuk power- Canadian Northern 2-8-2 Mikado (built by the Canadian Locomotive Company, Kingston Works Ontario, Canada, 1917) which is now owned and operated by STEAMTOWN National Historic Site, Scranton Pennsylvania. The excursion ran from Scranton to Moscow, Pa. (about 20 miles) where everyone was dropped off, then the train reversed back past the station by about a mile, and then did a run by at 40mph and what a site. I have a ton of pics and a video of it on my facebook page.
  10. What do trhey want for it and where in Jersey is it?? If its not too far I could go take a look at it and give you a better guess....
  11. Nickel Plate 765 coming around Horshoe Curve in Pennsylvania on an excursion this past weekend. I wanted to be there but could not make it. The guy running the camera was all over the place but the sound is awesome...turn up the volume!!!
  12. I gotta say, I didnt see that coming, that was outstanding, even if he is an asshole.
  13. email the Mack Museum archives at mack.museum@macktrucks.com Be advised I just emailed them a request earlier this week and got a reply that they were on an 8-week backlog due to number of requests.
  14. standard gear oil for the transfer case. NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH PRIMER OIL which can be any old crappy 10W40 or what have you.
  15. twostickmutt brings up a good point. If there is not a dipstick for the transfer case then look on the side of the casting for a pipe plug, also for a line in the casting with the words "OIL LEVEL." The oil should of course be at least this high. Remember it is critical even if the pump is not or has not been used as the truck still drives through this transfer case. Fill with gear oil. Also, before you check the pump, make sure all the caps are tight- discharges and steamer (intake) caps.
  16. When I called Pennsylvania to find out, the person I spoke with had no clue- they advised me yes I need a CDL. I said "even for an antique not in commerce? What about all these huge motor homes on bus chassis tagged as RV's? They dont need CDL's? I want to drive an antique firetruck one-third the weight and I need a CDL?? I cold hear person on the other end scratching their head. I finally called one of my elected officials, and a few weeks later I received a letter from PENNDOT's commissioner's office saying (in writing) that I do not need a CDL, only the proper class non-CDL. I keep that letter in my glove box "just in case."
  17. Bulldog boy is partially wrong about one thing- the transmission is placed into the "direct drive" gear for the pump, which is usually 4th- NOT THE HIGHEST GEAR. Look on the dashboard somewhere, there should be a tag that says "PUMP DIRECT DRIVE 4th GEAR" or something to that effect. I would test the pump by doing two things: 1. Activate the primer for about 20 seconds, and watch the suction gauge. You should see the needle approaching the negative readings. If and when the needle comes into the negatives, let it go as low as it can, and then let off the primer. See if and how long it holds. The longer it holds the tighter your pump is (hence good.) If it does not drop into the negatives or does not hold, it's not necessarily the end of the world but it aint good either. Worst case is you wont be able to prime the pump to pull a draft. 2. I would try to get a few hundred gallons of water into the tank, and then "circulate" some water- open the "tank to pump" valve and then open the "fill tank" valve and spin up the throttle until you have about 75-100psi showing on tne master pressure gauge. Let it flow for a few minutes while you observe for massive leaks. There will always be small ones, and dripping from the packing around the main shaft is actually a good thing.
  18. I saw the term "wet clutch" in the Convoy thread....What is it??? Is it a hydraulic clutch??? Esplain Lucy......Thank you!!!
  19. Weigh it and compare the weight to current scrap values. I just googled scrap prices in my area (Philly Metro) and from what I see, based on an estimated 30,000lb weight, it's only worth a little more than $2700.
  20. I dont know Cobber, every map or globe I have ever seen shows Oz upside down......???
  21. holy shit....are there Australian U-Models???? Do they have kickstands, or since being down under, and they are upside down, do they not fall over?
  22. Hey Vinny, nice stuff. I have the M-A-C-K, both of the side bulldogs, and the front bulldog off of my father's Hayward F-Model.....I'll never give them up, except maybe to my kids.
  23. Carl, about 2 years ago I had a problem in a church in my local where I am the FM. I was tipped off by a parishoner, a member of the VFD who filed an "anonymous" complaint. Chained exits, egress/exit lighting all inoperable, sprinkler system not inspected/serviced in several years, the list goes on. Biggest one of all though was the blocked exit in the main sanctuary- blocked by a piano. Did an inspection, list of violations issued with ample time to correct, except for the blocked and chained/locked exits which was required prior to the next occupation of the building. Following Sunday got a text message from Mr. Anonymous telling me that exits were still blocked/locked. Went over after services ended, met with the Pastor and told him his building was shut down until ALL corrections were made or citations ($1000 per day at x8 or 9 violations) would be issued. He says "God will protect us." My reply: "Pastor when it comes to matters of protecting you and your flock from the ravages of fire, I AM GOD and I am protecting you. Move the Piano and have the properly functioning locking mechanisms on the doors before vacation bible school on Tuesday and I'll think about letting you open the building for occupancy and we can negotiate a time period for correction of all the other violations."
