  1. twostickmutt brings up a good point. If there is not a dipstick for the transfer case then look on the side of the casting for a pipe plug, also for a line in the casting with the words "OIL LEVEL." The oil should of course be at least this high. Remember it is critical even if the pump is not or has not been used as the truck still drives through this transfer case. Fill with gear oil. Also, before you check the pump, make sure all the caps are tight- discharges and steamer (intake) caps.
  2. When I called Pennsylvania to find out, the person I spoke with had no clue- they advised me yes I need a CDL. I said "even for an antique not in commerce? What about all these huge motor homes on bus chassis tagged as RV's? They dont need CDL's? I want to drive an antique firetruck one-third the weight and I need a CDL?? I cold hear person on the other end scratching their head. I finally called one of my elected officials, and a few weeks later I received a letter from PENNDOT's commissioner's office saying (in writing) that I do not need a CDL, only the proper class non-CDL. I keep that letter in my glove box "just in case."
  3. Bulldog boy is partially wrong about one thing- the transmission is placed into the "direct drive" gear for the pump, which is usually 4th- NOT THE HIGHEST GEAR. Look on the dashboard somewhere, there should be a tag that says "PUMP DIRECT DRIVE 4th GEAR" or something to that effect. I would test the pump by doing two things: 1. Activate the primer for about 20 seconds, and watch the suction gauge. You should see the needle approaching the negative readings. If and when the needle comes into the negatives, let it go as low as it can, and then let off the primer. See if and how long it holds. The longer it holds the tighter your pump is (hence good.) If it does not drop into the negatives or does not hold, it's not necessarily the end of the world but it aint good either. Worst case is you wont be able to prime the pump to pull a draft. 2. I would try to get a few hundred gallons of water into the tank, and then "circulate" some water- open the "tank to pump" valve and then open the "fill tank" valve and spin up the throttle until you have about 75-100psi showing on tne master pressure gauge. Let it flow for a few minutes while you observe for massive leaks. There will always be small ones, and dripping from the packing around the main shaft is actually a good thing.
  4. I saw the term "wet clutch" in the Convoy thread....What is it??? Is it a hydraulic clutch??? Esplain Lucy......Thank you!!!
  5. Weigh it and compare the weight to current scrap values. I just googled scrap prices in my area (Philly Metro) and from what I see, based on an estimated 30,000lb weight, it's only worth a little more than $2700.
  6. I dont know Cobber, every map or globe I have ever seen shows Oz upside down......???
  7. holy shit....are there Australian U-Models???? Do they have kickstands, or since being down under, and they are upside down, do they not fall over?
  8. "Wet Clutch?" esplain lucy.........???
  9. Hey Vinny, nice stuff. I have the M-A-C-K, both of the side bulldogs, and the front bulldog off of my father's Hayward F-Model.....I'll never give them up, except maybe to my kids.
  10. Carl, about 2 years ago I had a problem in a church in my local where I am the FM. I was tipped off by a parishoner, a member of the VFD who filed an "anonymous" complaint. Chained exits, egress/exit lighting all inoperable, sprinkler system not inspected/serviced in several years, the list goes on. Biggest one of all though was the blocked exit in the main sanctuary- blocked by a piano. Did an inspection, list of violations issued with ample time to correct, except for the blocked and chained/locked exits which was required prior to the next occupation of the building. Following Sunday got a text message from Mr. Anonymous telling me that exits were still blocked/locked. Went over after services ended, met with the Pastor and told him his building was shut down until ALL corrections were made or citations ($1000 per day at x8 or 9 violations) would be issued. He says "God will protect us." My reply: "Pastor when it comes to matters of protecting you and your flock from the ravages of fire, I AM GOD and I am protecting you. Move the Piano and have the properly functioning locking mechanisms on the doors before vacation bible school on Tuesday and I'll think about letting you open the building for occupancy and we can negotiate a time period for correction of all the other violations."
  11. I agree. At night. With no moon. Standing about 100 yards away. In a driving snowstorm.
  12. He's not weird, just has drain bramage.
  13. I dont know about Delaware, but in the State of Pa, you do not need a CDL to operate an antique truck registered as such, and at no time may it be involved in commerce (hauling freight for revenue.) You do have to have the appropriate class non-CDL however. I would call the State of Delware and get the word from the horses mouth.
  14. Dont listen to him- the voices in my head tell me he has more screws loose than a Pinto.
  15. Thank you for destroying the image of B-Model Macks for me. Next year at Macungie I'm gonna punch you inna da' face. lol
  16. I had my 1958 FWD before I knew her. When we first started dating, she said "You have a WHAT?" Whenever I passed up the chance to spend time with her because of a car show or firetruck show or parade or whatever, she just rolled her eyes. Then eventually she caught on to the family and sentimental attachment I have to the truck. Then when SHE asked to have it in the wedding (she wanted pix with it, and to ride it from the church to the reception) I knew she was the one!!!!! (too bad it was raining buckets.....stopped raining long enough to get abouty 20 mins worth of pix but damn was it hot and humid on that day!!!!) SWMBO!!!!!! (she who must be obeyed)

  18. That 4-door R-Model firetruck was one of six delivered new to FDNY as a test. They were specially made for FDNY, but field testing deemed them too long to be able to navigate many of the tight streets throughout the boroughs. I have seen a similar picture before- that one at Flushing Airport is the only one known left in existence. It has been burned out, beaten, robbed, tortured, raped and pillaged, ridden hard and put away wet. What were you bidding on exactly??
  19. Our chapter of SPAAMFAA (The Cradle of Liberty Antique Fire Apparatus Assoc) just held our summer muster this past weekend. Thought I would post some pix of some Macks and some other stuff like a Mopile police car that showed up....Enjoy Oreland, Pa.(Montgomery County Company 700) A long time Mack customer- CF700 with the V-8. This truck is a regular trophy winner at all the parades and shows around here. Another CF Mack- I didnt take note where it was from. A 70's Plymouth Fury Delaware State Police Car for you Mopile freakazoids. Under the hood Another CF from Billingsport NJ, I believe thats in Camden County. An L- owner unknown.... Under the hood of the L Thought this was a neat shot of the "Mack", the bulldog and the American Flag. Under the hood of a B that for some reason I didnt take a picture of.....hmmmph... A pic of me and my two older men- The only reason I am posting this is to brag- those of you who remember me at the Macungie show may remember that I had just gotten gastric bypass surgery about a week and a half prior to the Macungie show....Well, this pic shows the results of the 76 pounds that I have lost (which includes pre-surgery weight loss) since the last week of April when I weighed 328. I am now 252. I hope to drop at LEAST another 50 pounds or so. Another brag picture- On the way home from the Muster, we stopped in Philadelphia at Engine Co 43/Ladder Co 9 located at 21st and Market Sts in downtown, where a good friend of mine is the Lieutenant on Ladder 9 on the "D" Platoon. Here are all 3 of my men standing in front of Ladder 9.
  20. With any hope, he uses the money he makes for english composition/grammar/spelling lessons.
  21. Too bad it has that Cummapart. May as well have a Detroit.
  22. Ok, it appears to be a legitimate ordinance. Therefore, one thing I WOULD NOT DO (despite everyone's encouragement) is to go in there without the permit and "just do it." You are already on their radar, and the hippies across the street filming you dont help. I pulled up the town's website- have you tried to contact the Supervisor yet? I would begin with him. Oh and by the way this is the first time I have ever heard of a bullshit ordinance like this......
  23. As a Code Enforcement Official myself, I would contact the Town Manager and/or one or all of the elected officials- they are the ones who caused the problem (the lay-off) and should be held accountable for the lack of action since they laid the permit guy off. Also, I would ask to see a copy of the ordinance- I have never heard of needing a permit to cut down a tree, not to say it doesnt exist, but town officials have been known to make up a law or two from time to time.
  24. Just to show you guys that I have some class and am not all about Fucked Over Rebuilt Dodges- Item #12 to purchase for the powerball bucket list will be a stock 1960 Buick Invicta convertible. #13: a 1958 Plymouth Fury. Those come after the F-Model Tractor and the B-Model firetrucks.
