How To Pull The Heads On The 673
Lmackattack replied to ThaddeusW's topic in Engine and Transmission
To pull the head remove the rockershaft, evenly lousen the bolts to relive the valve spring tension. pull the pushrods out and undo the head bolts. If everything is removed off the intake or exhaust it should come off. Or if your "old school" you can pull both heads off with the Intake, exhaust still bolted to the heads ...just bring a hoist and pull the top of the engine off in one pice ! -
Welcome to the site It varies state to state regarding CDL and antique trucks. In some states an antique plated truck can be drive with out a CDL but some states may require it if it has air brakes or is over said weight etc.. check with you local state laws.. Most of us here consider it a good idea just to have a CDL for that one cop that may hasel you and confuses you as a comercial truck and not antique. I have heard of only a few people getting hastled hauling a trailer with other antiques on it... I have never weighed my B model but my R model is 15,500 likely a little heavier than the B? Its getting harder to find B models out in the open but the internet makes up for it. hope you find a good project Trent

Thad you can still get the lines from mack. I just bought new injectors and lines a few months backfor my 285. like said above some injectors used diffrent styles of feed and return methods so check befor you buy. But I do think that the injector line routings from ENDT673 / 237s /285s etc... are all the same. havent looked real close but they look all the same?????

thad the air compressor is water cooled and oil lubed. as said before when you put the air compressor back on check to see if ther is a little hollow tube that is in the spline (love joy coupling) in the acc drive housing. this is where the compressor gets its oiling to the rod and crank journals on in the air compressor. the oil return will flow out of the compressors crank case and back down into the engine pan. I was able to get my fuel filter replaced at NAPA. Simply remove the hose on top and unscrew the top nut off the canister. after the cap is off I belive the filter slides out. There should be a rubber o-ring under the cap to seal the housing. I also was able to get a new oil filter from Napa... the primer pumps always rust. You can remove them and soak in PB blaster and see if that helps. Most of the time you need to dissasamble it and clean it up. or buy a new one as I think they have an updated version. Trent

400 V8 Superliner
Lmackattack replied to stranger69's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
the E9 (V8) had a engine brake set up option. not shure if they are still availible from mack? The V8s have a diffrent exhaust note than the 6 cyls and yes they do sound like they are miss fireing. I never liked the flutter sound but many others do. If you dont have a vibration im shure its running fine. The one thing I do like about them E9s is the power that they had. Compared to todays engines a good running E9 can still pull with the best of them. I belive in the US 500HP was the highest rated E9 availible. over in the out back they had higher HP ratings so if your still not happy at 400HP you could easly squeez some more power out of your "de-tuned" 400HP E9 Welcome to the site -
Sorry to hear of your friend. thats never a good thing to deal with.. You were 5 mins from my house when you stopped in Lakemoor would have invited you over for a quick chat before you hit the road. The engine sounds like it has been sitting. to pull the injectors I would almost say you will need the slide hammer to get them out. They are a real PITA if they rust up a little.

New Harness Or Rebuild
Lmackattack replied to Red Horse's topic in Electrical, Electronics and Lighting
for the amount of wire in these cabs its not a huge deal to re wire them up. think about it. new guages would have back lit lights on each one or use the old guage where one bulb lights up 2 guages. you have an amp or alt guage/ fuel/water temp/lights/marker lights/ turn signals/ start switch and a few others. to start get a painless wiring fuse panel http://performance.alternatefuelsracing.com/painless.html (12-CIRCUIT UNIVERSAL FUSE BLOCK # 30001) and run the wire your self. I feared if I bought an aftermarket harness that The lenghts would be incorrect and if I had to add soemthing to the truck later there were going to be stray wires anyway. just my .02 trent -
first slam your hand in the screen door of your house on the way out to the truck. this puts you inthe correct mood! They can be a Real PITA to get louse. My B had the wheel so rusted on that even an engine hoist could not get it louse, i ended up damaging it and just ended up cutting through it and got a diffrent one. As rob said lousen the nut but leave it on the end of the shaft so that it dont go flying around as it comes louse. put some PB blaster on the splines, put the washer or a bolt down in the shaft to avoid mushrooming the shaft end. try hitting it with a BFH as someone pulls up on it. I have also some times used a bottle jack to aid in braking it louse. Put a 4x4 on the floor, jack on top of the 4x4 and then a 2x4 cut to the correct length to help put bressuer on it as you smack the washer/bolt on the shaft end. some are easy some will make you pull your hair out!!! Its a great looking mack and I Would think again about selling it. but to each his own. looks like It has many of the factory bells and wistles that everyone wants. and heavy haul. that adds to the price grately. It just depends how bad someone wants it. list it high and if it sells you got a good sale price. If not its still yours to sell later. I would think 50K is about what most people would pay. so try for the big spenders and list it for 60K+ Just a fyi these old rare trucks seam to becoming collector pices. It may be nice some day down the road to just say you have one ....just for bragging rights!!!!

HA HA! thats funny!!! a little 237 pulling like a big v8.. just tell who ever asks that its a 673!!! or just put some v8 emplems on the hood and dont talk about it. Ya we were bummed out a bit about the canceled pull but it would have been a mudslide if they kept going. I told PJ that I was not going to pull with the RS as it would have been a wet repete just like lake County was. If you hear of a pull let us know Trent

thanks for the tips. after more thinking last week I decided to buy it today The trailer is 22' long with a 4 stage hoist. the guy who owned it used it for concrete and said he never had an issue with it gtting stuck. at one time he had side boards and said it would haul a normal load with no problems. That was my only concern as I dont want to get a load of stone and only put 2/3 a load on. The tires are real good but the brakes are real bad so I had to back them way off to get it home. The tail lights need some work as its a rats nest of wires back there. Hopefully in the next month I can get it up to good working order and go haul some dirt. The trailer was located near the White Sox ball park in south Chicago have no clue about the postal trailers? Trent

I have never pulled an end dump trailer with low side walls. Besides not able to haul quite as much without side boards is there any other disadvatages to them. Concrete comes to mind as it has a low tailgate as well?? Reason I ask is im looking to buy a trailer and found this one for cheep. The price is right and I dont haul much concrete. Specs Hilbilt Excavator Frameless. air tailgate. newer floor. needs paint and brakes. new hoist and hose. tires 60%

a local shop that I bring my truck to get service done at gave me a good rate last year labor to install all 4 corners was around $230 I belive parts cast was around $400 slacks, shoes (no cores), hardware,s cams etc.. if you went to a dealer bring at least $1500!!! LOL

The air ride dump trailers that I have pulled were frameless and 1/4 framed, and get air from the trailer tanks to supply air to the air bags (just like dry vans do) I can say that an air ride dump trailer rides like a cadillac compaired to springs. Even if the tractor rears are on springs it does not hop around and make alot of noise or buck the truck around. They also seam to stop better and do not wheel hop as easy. some if not all air ride dump trailes should be able to drop the air bags down when you open the tailgate. this is big deal! if the air is in the bags when you raise the box it can go over real easy.! The only need for an extra air line from the truck to the trailer is if the tailgate or other air options are plumbed seapretly from the trailers air system. like the air over electric tailgates as there is no extra hoses to tangel. when I flip the dash switch for the tailgate. a electric valve drops the bags and opens the gate at the same time. If your real trick then you can use an electric tarp on a dash switch. (still have to clean the spread pan!)

how far did it pull that night joe?
-
My old RS did as I expected. It Dident pull great as far as who got 1st position vs last but I was happy as I was not far behind where the 300-400HP club finished. I have the fuel bumped up a little but I dont want to tear it up as the truck is a source of income and a hobby. We were hoping that "Last call" (the R685ST) would pull further than me as we had a big turbo hanging off the side of the engine and the local mack mechanic turn it up before the event. it came up 10 feet short of me wich isnot to bad considering it was pretty much an all stock 237. I think this turbo we put on is either to big to build boost or it was setup to run low boost on a larger engine? All we could get the big turbo to push was 10 psi and it sounded like it was working hard just not creating anymore boost? So we put a 350HP mack turbo on it last weekend and we now get 20 PSI. We will pull again next thursday and see if we made any progress. I put in a call to a local pump shop to see if we cant build up a spare 300HP pump and have some trick injectors made for the engine. if its not to much $$$ we may have some more tinkering to do
