  1. I can't believe you don't have ROOM for it! Hell,I ALWAYS find room for more cool stuff-I have a LOT of friends that have room! You should go ahead and save it;you can probably fit 2 trucks or tractors you already have on it,actually SAVING you some room! Speed
  2. It opened for me as a bmp by using windows photo viewer. Speed
  3. That's one of the things I like best about you guys and girls-honesty. With so much bad going on out there,I try really hard to surround myself with friends, contacts and co-conspirators who share my values and sense of honor, and what you say rings true. People who truly value old trucks and bikes just seem to be cut from a better bolt of cloth than usual;I've been on both sides of the honor and trust that lives in these fine people. It's not something we do-it's more something we ARE. And the crowd is the best of the best as far as I'm concerned. Speed
  4. Things have gotten so weird! Up here we don't have the EPA on hand,as such,to screw things up for us. Of course the local landfill has their marching orders to conform to,but I don't think there's an actual local agent to deal with. There ARE things we're not equipped to deal with in a "green" manner. I recently ended up with about 15 gallons of gas so stale it looked like tar dripping from the fuel line, but the landfill won't accept it. Their solution? "Call the EPA office in Reno". I called, and got passed from one office to another for half an hour, then got hung up on. Good answer. I decided I'll mix it into my waste oil barrel and pump it into the landfill's waste oil tank, even if they don't accept fuels. It's that or wait until there's snow on the ground, take it out and dump it in a hole somewhere and start a bonfire with it,if it'll burn, and leave before the fire trucks arrive. Seriously-how bad do you think it'd be if just cut funding for the EPA,re-evaluate the whole lot of 'em and re-train the keepers and fire the rest. Speed
  5. I'd try "Virgo Fleet";they carry a LOT of chrome and Stainless accessories, and seem pretty reasonable price-wise. Speed
  6. Beautiful truck, and sounds well set up. Many, many happy miles waiting for you there. Are you planning to work it,or will it be just "recreational therapy"? Speed
  7. How do you guys keep finding trucks with intact glass? I can't even remember the last truck I got that didn't need at least a new windshield. BTW-Andy,you did get word that my E has a new owner and is being restored, didn't you? I kinda miss it,but the man who bought it will do right by it-it's going to be the Company "Diplomat"-you know, greet customers as they drive up to the business, pull floats in the parades, make special deliveries, etc.,fun stuff. I'm going to get the new owner logged in here as soon as he can sit down at his computer for a few minutes without working. In the meantime,I'll keep watching for another ol' I can afford. (Maybe Packer can help... ) Speed
  8. Seems like it's always been that way,to some degree;in order to get a loan, you have to prove you don't need one, then show a good reason why you DO need one.WTF?? Speed
  9. Hi all; Just wanted to let you know my '45 EH has a new owner. as much as I love that truck,I realized I probably would never be able to do a decent restoration on it,and it killed me to not be able to put it on the road, so I sold it to Jay Ericksen and his two brothers, owners of Wells Propane, here in Northern Nevada. Seems the Co. used a much like mine (their first truck) when they first opened,in the '50's,and Jay wants to restore mine and fit it with a tank and a matching trailer, for use in advertising, parades etc. and other special events. They're all really good people and I have no doubt they'll treat the truck well. I was glad to sell to these good people, and was paid a fair price for it. They're having the brakes completely rebuilt now, after which Jay will drive it the 50 miles to Wells,to go into their shop and undergo a full restoration. They will be saving the rear bumper/hitch and hoist for me,and plan to leave the upgraded electrics intact, with the 140 amp alternator, and will be using the drivetrain currently in it. I told Jay he should get signed in here,as you would be an invaluable resource in the restoration process,as well as a great bunch to know. I hope you'll make him as welcome here as you've made me,and I'll still be checking in. Maybe I can find another old within my reach financially-I feel kinda nekkid without a . (And that's not a pretty sight!) The sale, apart from getting the truck restored and it getting a pretty cushy ride thereafter, enabled me to pay off some bills and buy the parts to get a lot done on my other trucks and the Harley. My current projects are a new timing chain on my Chevy one ton (it failed right in front of my house)and a title and some needed parts to put the '54 GMC 2 ton on the road,as well as doing an engine swap on the '57 GMC 2 ton dump/flatbed (the locked 270 out-Chevy 292 in). Well, gotta go eat some dinner. Drive safe! Speed
  10. Can you post some contact info? I'd be interested in subscribing... Speed
  11. I was referred to "Filter Mart",so I emailed the part number and what information I have to them, got a reply this AM. THEY couldn't come up with a replacement either. Speed
  12. Okay-I might have already done this, but here's the number I got straight from the build sheet for my truck:485GB145A. This doesn't cross to anything at the parts stores,so it's either superceded by another number or it's just not available anymore. If I still had the original filter,I could at least hunt one down by measurement, but as it is now,I'm not sure I can get a close enough match from just the housing measurements. What filters are you other "E" owners using? My truck's a 1945 EH,the engine's an EN354. I've tried the NAPA number, but it's too small diameter and too short to use,but too long to stack two of. It was a sock type filter with a perforated steel cap on the top, which was domed. (It was so tightly fit or swollen in I had to pry the top off the cartridge and cut the rest apart to get it out.) Sorry to bug you again about this, but I'll be financially able to buy a proper filter for it soon and don't want that to slip through the cracks again. Thanks again for your help! Speed
  13. I bought a NAPA filter (made by WIX) for my EN354 before I drove down to get it,and it didn't fit. I chalked it up to a mis-read part number. Took that filter to the main NAPA store in Reno;the parts man there verified that was the same number HE found,so either the book is wrong or my truck doesn't have the engine all my numbers say it has. I contacted the Hastings filter distributor here with the filter number from my build sheet, and he couldn't find anything that it crossed to. SO-until I find something that fits and works,it runs fine without a filter. I'll just change the oil every third year. Best of luck in your search! Speed
  14. Seems like oil filters for these old Mack trucks are some of America's best guarded secrets, huh? Speed
  15. the only reason I can seriously consider for not using our own oil reserves is that the Obama gang wants to use up everyone else's oil first,so when the whole world is finally out of oil,we'd still have OUR oil. Never mind that this very mentality may be what drives the rest of the world to destruction. Speed
  16. I'm sure everybody has a story to prove contrary, but for the most part, you get what you give, with cops. They're people too,and they appreciate a little decency as much as we do. I notice the guys who give the cop attitude when he stops 'em usually gets treated worse than the guys who treat the cop like just another, guy doing his job. Not preachin' here, just suggesting that a little politeness doesn't cost anything, and might save some bucks on the ticket,if there is one. Last winter I mounted up a couple of tires on the front of my pick up ('57 GMC) but couldn't balance 'em yet,so I drove it from one on ramp to the next off ramp, just to see how it would drive. It was night, and the cab is so drafty I couldn't even hear the engine, couldn't see the gauges-no dash lights. That didn't matter, the speedo is broke anyway. Anyhow,I kept speeding up,waiting for the 60mph shake I knew would happen. Glanced in the mirror and saw the stoplights, then the overheads in the median, and then the headlights gaining fast. I pulled over when he tucked in behind me. He had me on radar at 88 mph,but we stood around for half an hour BS'ing about old trucks, brake upgrades, automatic vs. stick, etc.,and I got written for 5 over the speed limit. I'm pretty sure if I'd been a dick about being stopped,he could have worked up enough various charges (no turn signals, intermittent left taillight, cracked glass X3,thin rear tires,no speedometer, exhibition of speed-more than 30 over the speed limit,no horn ) to use the cuffs and impound my truck. "Nice" is free, and I'm ALL about free things... Drive safe, and play nice! Speed
  17. Marmon? (I would have guessed Hayes, too.) Speed
  18. I don't think it's a crew cab;it looks like what they considered a sleeper cab back then to me. Speed
  19. If you're putting 'em in your own trucks,it might be worth building some ducting to redirect the cold air, maybe down the back of the cab or something. You can sometimes find that kind of duct and vents at RV places or RV wrecking yards. Speed
  20. "i hate steerable, they will f#$k you up trying to back up in the soft stuff. as son as they touch anything they turn sidways and dig in. i don't think they make a 22,000 steerable..." I wonder why someone hasn't engineered a solenoid operated air0lock for steerables that would be triggered by either a toggle switch or the back-up lights. It'd lock the wheels straight. Might not be too hard to wire a light on the dash so the driver knows when it's locked. Speed
  21. Coupla years ago I was driving a '66 Chevy 60 I'd just put an engine in;leaving the shop I went around a right turn, all was fine, went around a LEFT turn, something went "POP" and it wouldn't turn past straight. Luckily I wasn't going too fast so I got it stopped before it did any damage. I managed to ease it home and found most of the guts of the steering box lying in the bottom of the box. On the plus side,I learned I could install a box from a '75 C-65,bolt on,and get power steering with the only fabrication being a bracket to mount the axle end of the slave cylinder. sometimes even bad things bring good things. Speed
  22. Just saw on TV that show,"Undercover Boss",is gonna have the CEO of working in the ranks this Sunday;Might be worth watching. You guys probably already know about this though.... Speed
  23. Hi all; Hey,I was looking at a transmission attached to an old Mack school bus engine I have, and wonder what it is;I don't have books for anything but what came in my EH originally. Here's the ID #. TK 311 If you can tell me a little about it,I'm wondering if it might be worth installing. Thanks for your help! Speed
