Steep Hills And 36 Degree Banking

if everything works here, these are a couple of hills that a truck driver can appreciate as being very, very, steep and the pictures show it. The Kenworth is the original one used in the "Moving On" tv series. So,what's that got to do with 36 degree banking? Bristol has 36 degree banking in the turns, and that's steep too...Besides,Paul was getting annoyed that I was taking all the good blog entry titles, a.k.a. whatever day of the week it was. It gets harder and harder to come up with a new and cat

Saturday Again

Made the trip to Nazareth,Pa. I passed right by the Nazareth Speedway going in,never seen that before. I drove the truck to Rockingham,N.C. to races a couple of times, and stopped and looked at the race tracks in Daytona,Talledega, and Darlington, and have passed by Bristol,Dover,North Wilkesboro,Atlanta,Michigan, maybe a couple more. Used to go to Charlotte,Richmond, and Martinsville every year, but it just got so expensive, and the traffic got so bad,and the cops in N.C. got so hateful I quit going

Movies

What's the deal with people anymore, they wouldn't realize a decent movie if it hit them in the face. I've been watching some older movies the last few days and I come across Porky's. My dad loved this movie even though it's a little perverted, but you wouldn't believe the people that hasn't even seen this movie. Convoy is another one half the people I know haven't even heard of this movie much less watched it. I grew up watching movies like this, but with people today if it don't have the best

Daddys Little Girl

im new to this and not real sure what im doing but i have a question about air ride vs. camelback pros and cons. is it true that air ride trucks tend to get stuck more often than camelback . we have dump trucks they were my fathers and he passed away from cancer 2 years ago there are so many questions i wish i had asked him. my mother and myself now are trying to run the business and i never dreamed i would have to be the truck buyer. i was always daddy's little girl i wish i had paid more atten

Sort Of An Apology

So, I didn't mean to be all that sarcastic yesterday with my blog entry. If I offended anybody - I apologize, as long as you haven't called me about the Peterbilt and promisd to send a deposit! Anyway, I picked up my springs from the spring shop today for the B-67. Brand new rear springs and re-arched front springs. Pretty nice. Apparently the center bolt holes were all rotted out in the old back spring stacks, and several leaves were broken. Got new U-bolts and nuts too. At the age of my truc

Update

It's Tuesday night, snowy, cold and starting to look like winter - again. At least it feels right. We (my uncle & I) have been cooperating on trying to sell a late model (2000) Peterbilt 379EXHD tractor that the company owns. It's a big power tractor (C-16 Cat 600 hp) that Jim bought from one of the Owner/Operators with three trailers that he needed. So we have been listed on E-bay and now in the TruckPaper Online. It's amazing to me how many flakes there are out there. The number of c

Lemon Pie

What is this? This looks like scrambled eggs. I don't even like scrambled eggs. This odyssey had began late Wednesday afternoon. I had picked up a frozen load for export in Atlanta. A Pompano, Miami split, with a Thursday am delivery was the usual drill. Both stops had come off without problems. At about 2:30 pm, I was on my way to Homestead. Usually by this time of day produce of all descriptions had began to make its way from the fields to the packing sheds. Availability of product to fi

More Jeff's Jokes

I was in the office Friday and a driver named Joe came in. He had a load going to Syracuse,N.Y. but he had no name for the customer and no delivery address on the bills. He said " how am I supposed to find this place in Syracuse,i've got no information". Jeff was sitting there and never hesitated a second and said " just pull up in Syracuse and blow the horn, somebody'll come get you-that's what I would do". I thought it was hilarious, but I don't think Joe got it. He just said "well Syracuse is a

Saturday

Well,I was gonna leave Sunday, but ended up leaving Saturday anyway. Afterwards I was glad I did of course-I drove to Maysville,Ky. Saturday and when I left there Sunday morning I still had 600 miles to go to Endeavor,Wisconsin. It was a good load, paid me $760. After I unloaded Monday I went to Chicago to reload for Baltimore. That paid almost $300,so I had a pretty good week in by the time I unloaded in Baltimore Wednesday morning. Then I went across the Key Bridge to Sparrows Point and loaded a

Friday

Friday nite, and just leaving the office for home. I think I finally have most of the big pieces for the reassembly of my B-67 frame and axles. I did go with the ACE Superide air suspension crossmember. Thought about what Tom Gannaway told me about making my own, but I couldn't get comfortable with pulling a loaded trailer. And he agreed that his design would need some reworking for pulling a trailer. The springs are being re-arched and getting new center bolts and U-bolts. and a couple of

Truckin' Around...

Well it's been 9 days since the last cigarette...but who's counting,right?.. and that was an ultra light-only one all day, while I was fueling up before I left for Orchard Park. Went to Zelienople and Fremont this week, loaded back to Roanoke out of Macedonia both times. Yesterday I went down to Petersburg and loaded 60' piling going about 10 miles North of Portage, Wisconsin for Monday delivery. Already got a load back to Norfolk out of Crystal Lake,Il. We had about 18-20 loads going up there,

Trucking Up

The truck speed limit in California is 55. That is not much for such a wide open area as I-40 between Barstow and the Arizona state line. But thats where I was, in the right lane, headed east. I had just passed the east bound rest area, which is at about the 22 mm, when an owner operator pulling a set of pups blew by. Come on big truck, she said I need to get this thing to Memphis. I can't do that I said. I always ran the speed limit until I got past Ludlow. CHP had a refueling stop at Ludlow

Strange Mid-winter

It's 50 degrees here tonite. Very weird. Although we usually get some sort of a mid-winter thaw - it never feels quite right. Then there's the mud and the gray, dull weather to deal with. It might be the only time of year that makes me think of going somewhere else. All the rest of the year the weather is pretty nice - even the severe cold and snow. At least that's what winter is supposed to be like. And, sick as it might be, we actually like it when it's cold and snowy. Making progress o

...good Question...

I found out quitting smoking is ridiculously easy-all you gotta do is not do it anymore! Now that I know that,i'm gonna run over to 699 Market and get me a pack...no,can't do it. I know from past experience, having quit several times before. And I don't mean quitting for 39 minutes,I mean quitting for years-then starting back. Once I was over at the hunting cabin, hadn't smoked for years,quit- A man named Dennis got the last cigarette out of the pack, crumpled it up,dropped it on the coffee table a

Finally Some Snow!

I was starting to wonder when we was gonna get some snow, then bam here it is. It snowed probably 2 or 3 inches here and layed pretty nice. Only problem was my water froze up, and the reason being we had to work on the well this summer and forgot to wrap everything up. Other than that it was fine. Parker and Paxton got to see their first snow, which I guess is just another thing to them, but alot to me and Amber. Finally gonna get to retire my Toyota pickup for awhile, got a '91 nissan pickup to

Post Holiday Catch-up

Two of the axle seals that I got a couple of weeks ago at Mack are wrong. By a lot! That's what I get for cheating everybody out of their Christmas presents so I could buy truck parts. So I took one of the originals to FleetPride to match them up. In about five minutes I had the right parts. Good lesson learned. It's a 60 mile round trip at $3.30/gal. for the gas. Now I open all the boxes before I go home to be sure the parts at least look right. This old stuff is a little tricky - with dif

Happy New Year

I'm off until tomorrow,so today I had the traditional New Years meal of blackeyed peas and greens. They were mustard greens, but mustard, turnip, kale, they all taste about the same to me-I like'em all. Creeces are the best, but hard to come by. They say the greens are supposed to bring you money in the new year and the blackeyed peas bring you luck. You're supposed to have hog jowl too,but I skipped on that part. I don't know what the hog jowl is supposed to represent anyway, but money and good luck c

Mid Holiday Update

Got a big scare this week - Food related. I take that very seriously. After buying my wife a new septic system for Christmas (when you need one, it's a very romantic gift), apparently the plumber needed to move my freezer in the basement in order to connect the new waste line. Anyway, the freezer did not survive the move. So, after discovering water running out the bottom of it, I needed to find some borrowed freezer room fast for an entire year's supply of beef, venison and a couple of turkeys

Crazy Christmas

We'll as the title says it was a crazy christmas. Parker had to have emergency surgery christmas morning, so we had a short lived christmas so to speak. It started on thursday when he started throwing up. We thought he had just got a little virus or something, but it turned into a very bad next few days. We had him at the clinic and they said it was acid reflux, then the hospital said it was a small virus. We took him for a third time to the hospital on christmas eve and I demanded something don

Sunny Florida...not!

I'm back. Left the day after Christmas and went to Orchard Park,N.Y. (Buffalo area) and then to Boardman,Oh. to pick up three magnets and dropped them at the shop this morning. They said Wednesday they had a load going to Boca Raton,Florida. Long ways, but Florida ain't bad this time of year. But-Neal called back about 2 minutes later and said the Orchard Park was there at the yard, loaded on a side kit trailer, and I could get it and go,so that's what I did. So much for Florida. That's OK,I'd jus

Youtube

Well,I posted my first youtube video. Not much to it really, and kind of shaky-you know how a cement mixer rides! This was taken after I left the stoplight at Concord,Va. headed west on rt. 460,and passing by Litchford's garage. I'm only about a mile from the shop here.

Pc Problems

Well,I was gonna try another video, but the PC is still defragmenting. I think something's wrong-it said it could take from a few minutes to a few hours, but it ran all yesterday afternoon and all night so it should be done by now! I might call old Bill back. I thought my Norton 360 did it automatically,it's set to,but Bill said Norton was nothing but trouble, and there are better free programs available when the Norton expires. It was preloaded on my computer when I bought it. Merry Christmas And Happy Macking

Not to sound greedy or anything - but I picked up all of my seals and bushings, and my brake shoes with new linings on Friday. Before I did any Christmas shopping for anyone else. My own Christmas gift to myself. Pretty nice. If Kathy knew.... Oh boy I don't even want to think about that. Hopefully the rear axle will be ready to install by the end of the week. I do have to take two brake shoes back in for relining - they had several small cracks in the new linings. It shouldn't be any real
