SuperB Posted July 30, 2023 Share Posted July 30, 2023 I think my '65 B61 might have had a governor oil supply filter on it at some point. I believe the 2 oil lines that are still on my truck were for that, but they're just connected together now near the intake manifold. Does anyone have any info on these filters? Is it a good idea to use them even if the truck isn't used every day anymore? The part numbers I have for bracket and filter are 142GB285 and 485GB356. Are photos of these parts available anywhere? 1965 Posted July 31, 2023 Share Posted July 31, 2023 Idk about Woodward governors on Mack’s, but the Woodward governors used on 2 stroke Detroit’s had a filter housing that was just a reservoir for oil supply for faster starts, no filter inside. Popular Post SuperB Posted August 3, 2023 Author Popular Post Share Posted August 3, 2023 (edited) I had to remove the injection pump to replace lifter cover gaskets, so I was able to confirm that the oil hose I was questioning does supply the oil to the Woodward governor. The hose connects to the top of the timing gear housing near the engine serial number stamping, and the passage goes through the syncrovance housing and up into the governor. The hose runs across the front of the engine and ends where the primary fuel filter would mount. This is apparently where Mack decided to mount the Woodward oil filter. The other hose runs down to the lower part of the block on the driver's side. I haven't pinpointed that yet, but it would be the oil supply and is currently just connected to the other hose with a tee (my filter was removed and bypassed apparently). I found a Woodward document online that says a minimum 40 micron filter is recommended to be used, and says that many Mack dealers wouldn't have honored the governor warranty if no filter was installed. The filter number above (485GB356) looks like it's the same number as the factory primary fuel filter, so maybe that's what would have been installed? For now, I'm going to install a Moroso remote filter housing and spin-on filter. It's pretty hard to find any info on the hydraulic governor for these, I guess not many were installed by Mack? Seems like most are the mechanical type. Here's a pic of the truck before we left for Macungie last month. Great show! mechohaulic Posted August 3, 2023 Share Posted August 3, 2023 I haven't seen one of those in :????? yrs. they all (98%) had the 1/8th in plugs installed to by pass the systems. another one of those posts that wake up the dormant brain cells , yet can picture the parts but can't remember everything.
