1983 Mack superliner transmission swap

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I have a 1983 Mack superliner I bought at an auction.  Someone restored this truck with a new cab, and put air ride suspension on the truck.  It has a 350 e-6 I believe.  It also has 4:17 gears and my Tire size is 11 r 22.5.  I am in the oilfield and dump truck business.  I would like this truck to cruise 65/75mph like modern trucks do.  Currently top speed is 57mph at 2000 rpms.  It currently has a twin stick 1071 I think in it.  I have a 2080b now from spare parts.  The twin stick is also popping out of high gear constantly so the tranny needs fixed regardless.  Can anyone help me?  Will the swap work?  Will this truck be able to drive down the road and pull a load ok?  A local guy told me this idea is suicide for this truck and a huge mistake?  All I pull is frac Tanks, a semi dump, drill pipe, and move my d6 Cat once in a while.  Please let me know any help is greatly appreciated

Not a good combo, the 2080 is real wide geared, a 1070 12 spd would be perfect with those rears, I drove a DM dump for years with a 12 spd. and 4.17 rears, would run 65 at 1600 rpm,s    terry:D

The ratios for the 107 14.43 (low first), 8.59, 4.99, 2.83, 1.66 and 1.00

The 2080b   20.08, 11.68, 6.63, 5.24, 3.05, 1.73, 1.00, .60

So, using the 2080B in seventh (direct 1.00) would be exactly what you have now in the 107 (direct 1.00).

But, eighth gear in a 2080B is OD .60 which would give you 100 mph @ 2000 rpm.  If you deadhead or are lightly loaded maybe you could pull 8th for 70 mph @ 1400 rpm, for example and make it work for you.

The 2080B would probably be a little more usable with rear gears like 4.88 or 5.32.

It doesn't cost anything to pay attention.

we have E6/350 with 1070 a 10 speed overdrive box, (yours is a direct gearbox hence lower speed), and our rears are same 4.17 it cruises at 70 + mph (118 kph) and pulls real good

the 12 1070 overdrive is also very good the 2 extra low gears are useful for your work - this box bolts on same as your gearbox
