As most of you know i got back from michigan about 2 1/2 weeks ago with my new trailer. I paid 2500 up front and i said i would pay the remaining 1500 when the title comes in. The fella said when i i got the trailer he should have the title in a week, ill call you when it comes in. That was 2 weeks ago.. So now what do i do. I can get a title right now for 1000 bucks, (JT is looking into a guy up in VT who can do it for 350). Ive been trying to call the guy for the past 2 weeks no answer, he doesnt return my texts. So do i say screw it get the title on my own and keep my remaining 1500 or keep on waiting for him to reply. We have a letter in writing and signed saying "2500 was paid and 1500 is due when title comes in" it is dated and signed by both parties... Also i don't want to wait for the title for months. I need the title to start working and get it in my name asap.

Let me know your opinions.

Give it another week. If no reply...Keep the cash find a new title. Plenty of scrapped trailers out there or other options. Just be smart about who you ask and who you tell...

what if he comes and tells me in another 2 weeks, that he has the title when i already got a new one on my own... What do i do

something smells pretty rotten to me,# 1,he sold you a trailer without having the title ready to hand you and #2 he let you take the trailer home, halfway across the country without paying for it in full, not knowing you from Adam.Did you notice any smoke coming from the trailer on the way home????

I am like Mike somthing dont sound right. if he had the trailer for a while or just bought it he should have the title, did he tell you he lost the title or didnt have it.

Nope no smoke, I bought the trailer from a scrap yard, Im assuming someone brought it in for scrap since it didn't have a title... The guy who i bought it from paid 1100 for it and i gave him 2500 down and the rest 1500 when the title comes in.

He told me the title was lost and one of his buddies was going to get a title for me... That was now 2 1/2 weeks ago...

I can get a title my self right now, but I'm just curious if he will come after me if he "ever" does get that title in and wants the rest of his money....

If he wanted his money I think he would have called you by now. Seems to me he got his hands on that trailer vials than legitimate means and made a fast buck by selling it to you . Don't be surprised if you find out that trailer still belongs to someone else. You may end up having to turn that trailer over to law enforcement and then your out the money you already spent. Frankly I wouldn't have left with that trailer without going to the notary first. I hope this is not scenario your in but it's certainly looking that way.

If you ran the VIN, then it will turn up the last owner. Contact them and see if they have a title or can get you one.

Way ahead of you JT, when i had the VIN ran i asked the lady is she can give me the pervious owners information, She said she can not as she can NOT give out any personal information of another party... I ran the vin before i even left for Calumet. So that leaves me at a dead end there. Atleast we know it ISNT stolen.

Somethings screwy there, whenever I've ran Vin #'s to get a bonded title, they've always gave me the last owners name as they MUST be contacted or an attempt must be made to contact them in order to first try and get a duplicate title. This nearly backfired on me once as the last titled owner had not been paid in full by the person I bought the truck from.

You have his business phone and nobody answers? I agree with Mike on the contact info. I would send a registered letter to him. Have you tried to contact the main state DMV where you bought the trailer for info? Paul

I'm not trying to bust your chops Tom but superdogs right, something stinks! Ok let's put this in perspective . 1. You bought this trailer and the guy doesn't come looking for the rest of his money? 2. You can't get a hold of the seller/won't return your calls. 3. Can't get info on previous owner. Something is definitely wrong and its not good. Just because you ran the vin doesn't mean it's not stolen, it may not have been reported as such yet. My advise to you would be contact someone you know that works in law enforcement and have them look into it. As a favor to you I will make a few calls and see if I can get someone in that capacity that might be able to check it out for you. If I can then I will let you know and well go from there.

I called Motor Vehicle. they ran the VIN didn't come up stolen... I asked many times and she said it is against our policy to give out another parties information. Since the trailer didn't come up stolen i can get a title on my own right now. Im don't playing the guys games. I already have my letter all made up and it will be going in the mail tomorrow. He had ample opportunities to contact me and let me know the status or just be upfront with me saying he couldn't get a title.

I do not have a business phone for him, I did not pick it up at the scrap yards location. It didn't look like a scrap yard there. Just a few trailers a building and a few dumpsters. I already have the letter made up. I contacted Michigan DMV before i went to get the trailer and they wouldnt even run the Vin for me. Michigan DMV really was no help at all.

Also the other thing, The trailer has a Current DOT inspection, It was last inspected April of 2012... I don't know if that helps any, but it was a registered and working trailer back in April..

In Ohio, it is a crime to sell a vehicle without a title. Not sure about Michigan. Perhaps you can contact the prosecutor up there and see if they can "motivate" the seller to get you the title?

Tom I think I told you before hand to leave this one alone it didn't seem right. Bout all I will say on that matter I just hope you don't end up loosing what you got into it. Something never did smell right with that deal

if everything does work out i got one healluva deal on the trailer then... Only got 2500 into it. Once i get a title it will be a done deal. Just hope it goes smooth.
