  1. Is this the one over near mountaineer diesel?
  2. What would the monthly payment be on a 2014 Mack? This one http://www.truckpaper.com/listingsdetail/detail.aspx?OHID=4513355 is $192,000 if no interest for 60 months that would be $3200 a month. This guy says he got financing..so gotta factor in interest. If he can feed a family and make house payments etc with that payment...i need to move to ohio. I just dont see how people can make a living with these new trucks.. Payment+insurance+tags+fuel+maintenance+workers comp+taxes... how is it possible to make a profit? I can see if someone has guaranteed day and night work for multi years...but seasonal work? no contracts? What would the lender need for such a finance? a title to a house? Just curious..to see someone elses business model.
  3. For wildcatting with no work lined up and "willing to travel the state of Ohio to keep the money rolling in" and starting my trucking company in the winter.. I would go with a glider kit. Get a nice quad with polished aluminum bed and polished wheels..all michelin tires. Biggest motor they have and get a good custom paint job. Get it set up the way you want...have the nicest truck around.. so that when you roll up looking for work..they all walk around your truck admiring it and asking questions.. that will lead into them wanting to hire you on the spot for asphalt, gravel..or whatever will fall out of the bed. Tinted windows help in the winter also..that white snow is blinding. get a 25% tint before you roll in looking for work so that you dont have to take a day off to get it done.
  4. DUSTER TRUCKING CO 164 MACK ROAD SCARBORO, WV 25917 They even named the road Mack Road.. He has probably 40 macks or more... a huge boneyard of forgotten macks...and more trucks and parts laying around than anyone could imagine. Everything he has is for sale. I may go try to talk about a superliner in a month or so.
  5. If u go to madison check out Danville Ready Mix Concrete..they have some nice U model mixers, R and RD dumps and tractors. Also if u head back on Rt. 3 there are a few log trucks and coal dumps that are R models that have the superliner headlights.. very nice trucks in that area.
  6. what kind of construction? The answer will always be the one that makes u the most profit..with attention to the one that you feel most comfortable driving. Since you didnt put Brockway or Diamond Reo or Marmon on the list im guessing you are asking for newer trucks...lol.
  7. if u have an econovance..that sounds like a possibility if the injector didnt fix it.
  8. http://www.dot.state.oh.us/Divisions/Operations/Maintenance/Permits/Pages/AXLEWEIGHTGUIDELINES.aspx Im guessing this truck will tare in at 29000 so that will allow him to haul 18000lbs or 9 tons if this classifies as a 'short triaxle'
  9. Had the same 'noise' awhile back...have someone follow beside you to narrow down which wheel its coming from (if its coming from the wheel)..then check your brake shoes. One of my brake shoes had come loose from the rivets...i suspected wheel bearings..but turned out to be an easy fix tic tic tic at low speeds. u can usualy tell diff problems thru the gear shifter
  10. I know u have dump truck fever..but there are some questions i would ask before i bought that truck. 1)you say you will be hauling in ohio.. what kind of weight can u haul in a triaxle in ohio? which leads to the next question.. 2)what is the empty weight of that truck? if u are hauling by the ton.. how much can you haul in that truck? 3)you say you are buying for asphalt..does it have an asphalt tarp? can you use a flip tarp for asphalt in your area? 4)Isnt the season close to being over for asphalt? maybe a month or so tops? 5)does your asphalt company require your bed to be insulated? if so how do u plan to insulate that bed? 6)do u have anything lined up to haul besides asphalt? if not are you financially stable to make payments through the winter if there is no work? I ask these questions because i make a living with a dump truck hauling asphalt and have hauls through the winter...it is a very tough business you are about to get into so just trying to help.
  11. 11r22.5 would be found on trailers easily. I use that size for my tag axle tires on a couple of trucks and get them at salvage yards and big trucking outfits that have those trailer tires laying around for spares. So for the best deal just say you are looking for a decent virgin tire for your tag axle.. i get mine for around $75
  12. We do blacktop, milling, gravel, dirt, fly ash... If you plan on getting paid by the ton go with the aluminum bed. If you mostly get paid by the hour go with whichever bed is cheaper. Tri or quad? If paid by tonnage go with the quad. Automatic or Standard? Whichever u feel most comfortable with.. Either will do the job but you are the one that has to live with it 3000hrs a year in that seat. Quiet? you can make any older truck quieter with dynamat and a better exhaust. Tarp? if you haul blacktop do they require slide tarps? Either way I prefer mountain tarp..excellent service and products. Tires? if this is your only truck either 22.5 or 24.5, but if you plan on getting others its easier to keep them the same so that you dont have a bunch of spares Since you are shopping for a used truck a few yrs old, you are probably not going to find the exact perfect setup... If it were me i would choose a pre-def (2009 and older) 427 8LL 4:42 rears, camelback, alfab/benson/rhodes aluminum bed 18ft.
  13. Those coopers are good tires..buy them with confidence. made in usa also. the dynatrac rs330+ is a michelin clone and is what i use for steers on my tractors. I have used those coopers but they are hard to find here. Also I prefer 16ply for the fronts.. a few dollars more but seem to wear better. Double Coin, Aeolus, Triangle, Dynatrac, Samson... I think they are all made by the same chinese tire company.. Dont be afraid of these tires, they see roads alot worse than we have here in the states.. china, africa, south america,,
  14. how did you do the "custom grille" on the black one? where did u get that bumper? I have an 05 granite that if i dont sell im going to dress it up this winter...very nice trucks 84superdog!!
  15. I too have an 1986 RD688 and had similar problems. I had a sticky plunger. There is a little tool that my pump shop let me borrow that i took the plungers out of the barrel and had them faced up and new o-rings put on. There was rust down in the plunger that tore the o-rings. If thats all it is you dont have to take the pump off, just the lines going into the pump and use the little tool to pull the plungers. The tool is plastic and looks funny but it pulls them right out. Not a hard job at all and cheap if that is your problem..if not then idk.
  16. The pics of the trucks over there in the corner with the IH and the paystar...i just bought a quad axle RD off him 4 months ago. Kevin from Kanawha Transport. Take pics of his little toy the RD688 hes been polishing up. He sanded the tanks and bed and has it looking really nice. as for the name of the guy in beckley..give me a couple of days and I will text the owner of WV spring he is the one that put me in touch with him but i forgot who it was. Trust me its worth the drive..this guy doesnt even know how many trucks he has..let alone the parts laying everywhere. They are all blinged out from the coal hauling of the 80s and 90s. Yes Hoffman Trucking is my company.. if you are looking for anything let me know..
  17. What is your boost pressure? Turbo was checked? how? When they replaced the studs and gaskets, how do u know that a piece of the gasket didnt fall into the exhaust ports and restrict? If it were my truck i would take the turbo completely off and if someone else worked on it i would backtrack everything they did..especially if the noise is after their work...if the noise has been there since before the work...then suspect that there is a flaw in the turbo. Is the turbo new? reman? rebuilt? BOOST and EGR temps are what you need to focus on to determine your problem. If they are within range suspect that you have a failing bearing somewhere in the turbo that gives you that noise.
  18. There is a flap under the dash that opens and closes..if its stuck shut you wont get any air thru the vents..I think it runs on a cable.. If this is the cause of you not getting the airflow you need then you can manually open the flap and put a self tapper screw to keep it open until you get the correct parts to fix. You may have to roll down the windows if it gets too cold, but at least you will have cold air coming thru the vents. Its been awhile since i did it but its not hard to do. This was a fix on a 2005 granite CV713 of mine due to no air coming out of the vents. May or not be your problem.
  19. There was a guy posted about some macks up near beckley a few months ago..i went and looked and he had at least 30 maybe 40 dumps and tractors..superliners, 888s 688s u name it..it was kind of overwhelming. He lost his coal haul and they are just sitting up there. With that many units he probably has a boneyard around somewhere with the wrecked ones.. He is sitting on a fortune and doesnt really seem that motivated to do anything with them. Countryboy, im in st.albans..like 10 minutes from you.. Got 6 working dumps and 2 tractors.. got a mack hood and some oddball mack parts laying around the shop if u wanna come over some time.
  20. Destiny delivers gravel from grayson ky to huntington wv mostly. They deliver gravel, sand etc to asphalt plants in this area. I have the same truck 2005 granite CV713 but mine is teal greenish blue. It has a 427hp engine and 8LL, has about 80000 more miles. I plan on listing it soon..im losing a haul and selling 5 trucks and keeping 2 for asphalt. I am going to list it for $45K its a quad and has an 18ft bed also. Mine has the 425/65/22.5 steers, but does not have aluminum drives, all of mine cracked here and there and i replaced with steel. Mine has the bigger engine and 8LL as well. Mine isnt polished, it works every day..has a new donovan flip tarp. Ive had it for 3 years, it has a new cam, power divider and trans rebuilt, new turbo, new radiator. Been a good truck, hate to sell it. If it dont sell im going to redo the rims and chrome it out this winter and find a haul for it locally. PM me if interested.
  21. I have 4 dumps I will be selling on craigslist and ebay soon. Trucks currently work 3 to 6 days a week, but losing my haul in a couple of weeks. Trucks currently haul dirt and regrinds, stone and sand. All trucks are well maintained, everything works on all trucks. They are greased weekly and all fluids are currently fresh, all filters are fresh. All tires pass DOT regulations.. all trucks can go to work on day one without any work needed. Yes there are some cosmetic issues with paint etc.. but we focus 100% on mechanical..we rarely even take time to wash trucks. All trucks have air conditioning that works, and all have new or newer tarps. 1990 Blue Mack RD688S Quad Axle 588,056 miles 19.5ft Alfab Bed Aluminum 3502V 8LL $20,000 obo 1998 Grey Mack RD688SX TriAxle 359,772 miles 16.5ft OX steel E7-400 18speed Mack trans. $25,000 obo 1990 LTL9000 Ford Triaxle 594108 miles 16.5ft J&J aluminum 425caterpillar 8LL $15,000 obo 1986 Brown Mack RD688S TriAxle 696866 miles 18.5ft Benson aluminum 3504V 8LL $18,000 obo Email questions to krismoriah72@yahoo.com i drive truck 6 days a week and cannot answer questions until evenings. I can call you after 6pm with any questions you may have. Trucks are located in Charleston WV.
  22. Could be the air valve on the tranny not pushing enough air. Sometimes cleaning them helps. If that doesnt help then usually a synchronizer is going bad...so time for another rebuild..but maybe not a full rebuild.
  23. 44 year old bias ply tires? 44 year old seals.. hmm idk if i would drive it off the farm or not. Looks like alot of fun and work.
  24. what happened to the first engine that lasted 150K miles?
  25. I too was spinning rims and ripping off valve stems a few years ago. Bought new wedges, because mine were sharp and worn. The snapping of valve stems reduced but didnt disappear. I talked to a mechanic at a salvage yard about converting to hub pilot...and he told me a 'trick' and i havent had any problems since. Tighten the wedges as normal, but not paying attention to 'trueness' take a sledge hammer and bang around the rim 6 or 7 times hard, and then you will see the rim has come loose again...now tighten and pay attention to 'trueness of the wheel'. The sledgehammer method lets you tighen the wedges at least a half turn further than if u nearly tear up an impact. I have 6 trucks with daytons/spokes and have zero problems after i eliminated the sharp and worn out wedges and use the sledgehammer tightening.. I am mainly offroad with overweights common..so the extra tighening was needed. So instead of spending thousands of dollars for a conversion...spend a hundred in worn out wedges and a good sledgehammer...
