  1. it's a gamble with the crane also with using just one bolt on front to hook chain.
  2. back in the day, baskin robbins had a fleet of IH4070A's (east coast branch) also 5 KW's 2-K123's/ 3-K100's. when it came to delivery's in city's; I would take an I H over kw's any day. IH were 318/RTO 9513's. KW 350 DD /12513 RR. for back up road service, I kept a 4070 inside at all times for those 1-2 am road calls; and there were many.
  3. it's an oversize load no matter how you look at it. the dolly up closer to tractor would shift some of the weight off tractor; course that's a Polocks way of thinking. LOL also depends on the route and as you know large number of factors. interesting to watch u-tube showing oversize load moving. 90 degree turns with 150 + ft loads.
  4. the rear set in picture looks right on the ass of beam puts major weight on tractor. long loads usually have the rear set of wheels slid up the load to distribute the weight with the load overhang . could be there is alot more over hang can't see in picture. back in the Mack days, I set up a number of very heavy DM611's for a concrete company in CT. osculating 5th wheels on 6 in high spacers for superlong T beams . never got to drive the units with beams connected. one of the DM's had a short life span . seems the operator of the overhead crane lost control of the beam = the damage to the cab was unbelievable. the beam crushed the cab to flat
  5. interesting old topic; I have to question some of the statements (just for conversation only). 1- the top and bottom oil is not separate. oil from lower banjo feeds top with the rotating bull ring gear.2- with the cost of gear oil; especially todays synthetic to drain/change oil in rears WITHOUT pulling axles/caps to at least drain wheel hubs of old oil is like taking a second cup of coffee after dumping first that had coffee grounds in cup without rinsing cup out;;; the grounds will still be in cup. the oil in hubs will still be contaminating new oil. just sayin.
  6. JoJo your small welder (gasless) is it a 115 v ? how do you like it. I borrowed my brothers since i don't have a welder anymore. it is a hobart 115v gasless. I can't get it to bead well no matter how clean the steel. guess i got tooo use to having gas combo. or bigger stick rod welder. not to mention eyes can't see sh-t anymore.
  7. heck of a piece of steel on just a twin screw; would think at least a jeep in between. or four axle tractor. have seen twin screw units carrying heavy loads , that beam seems awfully long.
  8. had three Minneapolis Molines once . a BH (?) and two Z's ::ZAE and ZAU . I favor the wide front-end tractors since they are for fun not going between rows.
  9. nice tractors ; even better is the Family involvement.
  10. try working as mechanic for a union company! drivers attitude " I'm a truck driver , that's the mechanics job to check everything". based on true experience, fortunately involving an "ole timer driver" ;; i got a phone call middle of night from driver saying "something wrong with wheels on trailer". load my flatbed ford with stuff head out for hr ride. get there to find rear set of duals on trailer sticking out foot or so. grease bearing on 15in wheels. not lack of maintenance. bearing failure. it does happen . I removed wheel set / loaded my truck and chained axle up for trip back to CT, one of the more positive ending stories.
  11. I got a better "picture " of this truck now. didn't click the web site and see all the detailed pictures yesterday. would have seen the air starter info.
  12. can't enlarge the picture, but maybe the tach was added with more concern for drivers to learn shifting at proper R PM's and less for speed ; ever see a municipality truck going fast! first picture has either a hyd tank (black) or it has larger tank for air starter ; reason for added gauge ??
  13. possibly it had a tattle tale speedo ; bigger square . kinda close to drivers knees though. replaced with regular mack speedo. i'm seeing an extra gauge also:: air/ water temp/ volts/ fuel level. #5 ??. door shows it was owned by municipality, don't think if bought new they would need two tanks.
  14. MB 400 should be a scania ??? would not a MB600 have the mack engine. MB 400 also had gas engines . I don't remember the break down for 487
  15. We're not tooo old to do it ,we are "trying to educate the younger generation " the how to's of doing it . sounds better; I know we are to old .😁 to find a youngster willing to put down their phone. to work on something that "came over with the pilgrims" , = I've heard that one once is a feat in it self.
  16. seems the trend on east coast is :: color doesn't matter. some fleets are running any color truck they find. a concrete fleet used to be orange/blue and red /white . see many of their fleet random colors. a growing dump fleet in area runs every color . paint doesn't make more money.
  17. I'm NOT going to get suckered into going off topic LOL ; bet the drive in had a movie about a U -700. that was close LOL🙃😇
  18. years ago,"a shot in the dark" is what took place at the drive-ins. todays world a shot in the dark always involves a gun. tooo bad.. 😁😄
  19. most of us know today's cost to buy a plastic truck;; magine the cost in todays world to buy a steel truck like DM800 . all the soda cans given up to build just the hood. has been said many times on here; it's a different world. air bags carry 100K . to put old style lower cross over line the cross brace and fuel tanks would have to with stand a direct hit . like military hum vees. modern tech also save the turtles and bugs. fewer fuel spills with top cross over.
  20. if I remember (asking a lot). the R-700's with 8V-71's had twin 3 1/2 in stacks. the U in picture seems to have only one. 864 mack or 903 having 4 in single ??
  21. lower cross over line ; was in the good days (old school). too many ripped off cross over lines from road debris, resulting in fuel spills/leaks . as with most "improvements" results were, are a pain in a-s
  22. my Father left us back in '97 at 73 yrs old; cancer took a long painful yr to take him. my mother ( not a nice person-hated everyone. ) was 91 when she left in2019. year before she left, we were all sitting at the convalescent home. doc said her mind is going. she looks across the table ; sees me and yells " you Son of a Bit-- what are you doing there. Loudly I says " see she hasn't lost her mind, still remembers me. True story .
  23. must have seen the roadway U-700 in the day, just never paid attention. don't think roadway was a fleet serviced at the dealer then.
  24. everyone's situation is different. many heated discussions between wife and myself regarding retirement. 1- wait later more money per month But every yr the retirement age seems to go up.2- i've added money lost by waiting vs anticipated income. 3- every yr a person gets older /can't do as much . 4-at this rate the $$$ is going to run out. going off topic.
  25. same happened in CT; big rig tire bounced the center barrier, went air born to opposing traffic and killed a woman in car. only common denominator of living things ; man or animal: we all have a start and finish date. never take a minute for granted. such a sad unfortunate moment.
