  1. Thaddeus,

I believe the Euro test for the cabs is the ECE 29R test!

    Joe

The Argosy is a nice prime mover, it has loads of room, the down fall is it kicks the hell out of you and if your two up it kicks you out of the bed, we have massive lenght restrictions here, but most north west roadtrains are running bonneted trucks, east-west is mainly cab overs and mainly Kenworth for some stupid reason!

I enjoyed the Argosy we had wich had done a million kms with a 550hp detroit and a spicer gearbox. the engine had never been rebuilt.

if the length restrictions are capped on trailers alone I dont see cab overs lasting to long here either.

  2. Agree

Weld the crack bolt the insert! If you are not a welder your best off doing it this way! If not done correctly just welding will break again. Also smooth the flanges as best you can that is where the crack will likly start again!

Hi, the frame on my Flintstone has been cut in half and extended by 3 feet, it must have been done atleast 20years ago and has been pulling roadtrains and been put through the roughness of a mine site and its still together. I have to do some more work on the frame and have an engineer next to me, his advice to me is grind out the frame on a 45degree angle where a crack may be and then heat metal a little then weld it and let it cool down as slow as possible.

all my cross beams are split and have to be done, then I will add a fish plate as per the mack specifactions.

  3. Both Synflex and the Aeroquip are very tough hoses. Both will do a great job, some customers in the vocational area like the aeroquip hoses better, but the synflex is tough as nails.. don't discount that plastic (synflex) piping...

    mike

The 69 flintstone i just pulled down had aeroquip braided lines and lots of copper lines. I was surprised to see so much copper! I just put it down to when they made trucks back then, they were made to last unlike today.

  4. Grant,

Is the pic of the ones out of the 75 & 76? Are they for sale?

    Vance

Hello, the second set in maybe???, there out of the 69 flintstone and are the same as the front set, ratio is 5.32

the front ones are a 5.13, still wrong ratio for what I need, but they will get it going for now.

  5. Ossablt I have seen them on B models and i know they were on early R models, That is the 4 point mounting

We call them Eagle Claw mounting here in OZ. I have only seen them on heavyweight 44's and up

Don't know when they came out. Mark

Hi, ive known it as the crows foot mounting, the 69 flintstone has it and the 75 FR700 i wrecked had it, see pic. and the 76 R600 water truck I scrapped had it also.

its beeter than the other system i have been told.

  6. I took the outer frame off my B because of spreading. They were only about 12ft long, but still a beach to get unhooked. Took a few hits with sledge and a longgg bar to get them to fall off.

Glad to hear you got them apart.

The first one took all day, the second one 2 hours once we had foundd a system that worked. now i have to straighten the one we bent!

  7. Ducky Sandblast them. Unless you get rid of ALL the rust you can paint them with all of the expensive paints

and it will come back. Blast them. Just prime and use an enamel chasis paint, GMH chasis black is the cheapest

It will see you out. They were un painted inside at the factory anyway. Mark

Will do, am hitting them today with a needle gun, them get them blasted! I nearly bought brand new rails yesterday if these didnt come apart, new ones were 13,000 aud for un drilled 343 inch long rails that were just under 11 inches high, these rails are only 9 inches.

    the price stopped me!

  8. If the rail is "HEAT TREATED" you could weakin it . ON my truck there are big signs on the rails ..."DO NOT HEAT,WELD,CUT, OR NOTCH FRAME FLANGE". I would rather have a few hours of hard work than destroy a good rail. Ducky becareful and if you get aggravated with it take a break and come back to it. Robs idea sounds good as well as the others .

Got them apart! tried by driving them into a 20ft container weighing 10 ton and failed, then welded 2 nuts half way down chassis and used a bolt to push inner rail out of outer rail. now for the clean up. :)

what paint shuld be used to stop them rusting?

  9. Hello

I re-create old semi trucks in a 3D environment for video games and I am have a heck of a time finding some good interior/dashboard pictures of a mid 70's Mack R600. Does anyone have something they could send me or direct me to a website that does?

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks

Hi, they were made in 1969, so not heat treated, I will avoid heat, today they got a gallon of phosphoric acid to break down the rust, still no luck but tomorrow am putting it against a 20 foot container and putting a forklift thru it! dam thing! the rust is not bad compared to most I have seen, but I do have to split the rails, not stopping now!

    Grant

  11. they can be a pita to split if the rust is bad. When the rails rust the inner rail tends to spread and pinch the outer rail. lots of prying to get it out sometimes, use a wedge and hammer it down the rail adding blocks behind it. hopefully once it starts coming out it will get easy.

    Trent

Its gone about 60inches down and stopped, am now worried about kinking the channel, will find a wedge, need a long bar tho.

    thankyou for suggestion.

    Grant

  12. Hello, any one split a R model chassis? the one with inner and outer rails. I have this thing stripped and cant get the inner rail out of the outer rail, it does have rust between the two but am surprised to see it still together after 3 hours of argueing with it. pic attached is prior to cross beams out, i now have the two rails laying flat next to each other, would like to see 4 tho.

are they hard to get apart? any specific techniques?

any help would be great, thankyou

  13. The input shaft has decided to break in my steering box, it broke even with the top of the box. I was wondering if parts are still available for this box and where to get them. It says Ross hydropower, the casting numbert is HF642884 and the stamped in number is HF64114. Anybody know anything about these. Thanks

Just out of curiosity why did it break?

    Grant

  14. Grant. Now why did you remind me of all that "crap .. red tape ect" i was having a nice day.. Mark.

well, um its true, cant have blown cars on road, cant have guns with out years of aguements and baby sitting from police, cant protect your self or your property with out getting charged with something your self, heaven forbid if your car was to make a slight squeel on the road, there is people getting beaten an the rest of it, but where are the only cops we have? busting an 18 year old for just been an 18 year old! the truck laws for east - west are just out of this world, it seems to me that if the government could get aproval to put everyone in cotton wool to go out the house they would!

you just cant have any fun here, if so the government has found a way to bill you for it! :))

so how do I get to stay in the USA?

    Grant

  15. Welcome to down under. Like Rod said, don't tell anyone. It's pretty cool living down at the bottom of the world.

Not many know we are here. It only snows on a hill down south now and then. Beautifull one day perfect the next

what can i say Regards Mark :D

welcome to down under :) now ill swap you, i am sick of liiving down here with all the red tape, legal system etc etc. how do i get over there?

    Grant

  16. Hi Tim. I would have thought they would be popular in the US.

They were a lot of trucks with them over here.

I bought a 20 speed spicer to replace the Quad box and never fitted it,

thats how i had the spec sheets. I drove one and could not get used to all the clicky

things on the stick, Kept forgetting where i was at. If you look at the spicer box

they are a better box than the roadranger. Bigger gears better designed but they were twice the price to

do up . Thats why i chickened out and bought a roadranger. I had that box for years and only sold it

    about 2 years ago. Mark.

Thankyou very much for that. looks like its transmission for this little black duck :) I assume the A or B would mean single or double overdrive? I just picked up two of them, one for parts. now just need a gear lever and knob assembley.

    Grant

  17. :SMOKIE-LFT: I don't know how to explain it to you any better. but let me tell you that once you master the Mack 12 speed it will be the best transmission you can have behind that E9 :SMOKIE-RT:

Thats pretty much it. if your shift change for going up gears is say a 400 rpm drop per gear change then for a down shift the rpm would be around 400 higher than your current rpm.

    Grant

  18. Grant I have a spec sheet somewhere on a 1420-3B if thats any good.

will have to look for it.

Helo, whats the differance? is the A a single overdrive and the B a double over?

i was looking for a website, but havent found one.

    Grant

  19. David. How do you think we feel changing gears with our right hand. Not to mention driving on the wrong side

of the road. I couldn't do that. Just a thought though, Might get more of a suntan on me left arm though.

the other side of the road is not to hard to get used to, the gear changeing is just the same, i all so have an Australian car tucked away in Chicago and its fun to drive that over there, the hardest part is when you try overtake! :) best thing is to play follow the leader! and hope to hell he stays on the correct side of the road.

    Grant

  20. While I've not driven a large truck or commercial vehicle I have driven several Rt. hand drive sports cars, and light trucks. The shifting is really not difficult to master at all, just takes some time in the saddle. What was difficult for me was to stay on the correct side of the road, and negotiate traffic. Now that took some getting used to.

I sure wouldn't want to start right off in a different country learning in heavy traffic that's for sure. I drove around London and that took some getting used to to say the least!!

    Rob

Thankyou every one for the pics, looks like there is no real common ground except for maybe temps an air psi at top. so i would assume most people look across for most important gauges rather than down.

    Grant

  21. 123 oil water and egt. 456 fuel pressure boost and trans temp, 789 air pressure volts and fuel level. If you are trying to have a factory set up I just don't know Paul Van Scott has a 66 with all the guages in the speedo cluster. My 73 has all of them with exception of the air pressure mounted in the center of the all steel flat dash. What ever you come up with would suit me fine. I like the idea of rebuilding something bigger, better, faster, and neater. If it stands out, and shines like a new penny, so much the better. Quality craftsmanship never gets old or never goes out of style. Fix it the way you like it, that's what hot rod's are about. What could be better than a hot rod Mack with a 60 in, air ride cab/bunk, a hanging brake pedal, and a custom guage package.

I think i will have to move the truck along a little and sit it all in there and play! :) its going to be interesting wireing it all up, there all elictric, no air lines or tach cable, speedo cable at all.
