I remember years ago, in the late 70s early 80s before we were globalised, it made it to the news in Australia about a cap that came off on a Greyhound interstate type of bus (not saying it was Greyhound, rather a big coach like a Greyhound bus) Anyway as I recall it the cap went thru the floor and killed a kid I believe To me they are just a pain and just not worth it I haven't bought a cap in well over 20 years, last caps I had were a set of drive tyres and I chucked them after a couple of blow outs Paul
  2. I did some googling for 12 R 24.5's Well they are gunna be hard to find in Australia but what I did find was ove4 a grand, maybe 1300 bucks, phew That doesn't even roll off the tounge any good Paul

I dunno were you blokes are shopping, I just did a quick Google and there's no shortage of 11R 22.5 tyres for sale in Australia for under 300 bucks Australian Yeah they will be cheap Chinese stuff but I bet they'll last fine on a toy hauler or any of our hobby trucks, even for the bloke running around town for a living Dunno about 24.5 as I have never seen them in Australia Paul

Im stunned, I don't know of anyone running caps these days because of this very reason I dont see belts all along the highway anymore, it has been maybe 5 years since I have even noticed the caps on the sides of the roads Drive tyres always run a lot hotter than trailer tyres, as in even on a hot day I can put my hand on a trailer tyre but a drive is very hot to touch Paul

Let them scoff all they like, they won't be on the road side of a busy hwy helping change blown out tyre, or worse still trying jack up a truck that keeps sinking into the road Or laying in bed with a sore back after something went wrong I dont talk about money as someone reckons I either paid to much, or ripped some one off or I was a fool or they saw me coming And yes, the older I get the more inclined I am to say "stuff it" and just pay someone to do some jobs I would of once done Your toy, your money and you don't oh anyone except the cook a explanation Paul

  10. Thats dirt cheap to my and my way of thinking Proper tool for the job for less than a 100 bucks Not worth stuffing around with lighter fluid or ratchet straps Paul
  11. A lot of people wrap a ratchet strap around the tyre (following the tread way) and pull it in a bit and the walls touch the rim enough to seal that a bead blaster isn't needed This is a bit of stuffing about but will work if your in a bind Paul
  12. Pulled a diff center that was like that once The further I looked the worse it got, and worse and worse and...... well its only money and we can't take it with us Thats what I tell myself so I dont feel to bad 😄 Paul

This caught my eye on Sunday Today 25th April is ANZAC day in Australia and NewZealand It commemorates the landing of the Australian and NewZealand Army Corps at Gallipoli I'm guessing this was getting the once over before the parade and will cart veterans today Sadly we lost our last WW2 veteran only a number of weeks ago, no media mention of it except on the radio Anyway I'll let blokes Google ANZAC day if you want Paul

Must be flash donuts at that price, I never pay anything like that Anyway I guess I'm a tight ass with short arms and deep pockets I look at tyres alike this, it's not so much the stuff around when one blows but the damage they do I have never changed a tyre based on it's age, I only change them on their condition Having said that, the last blow out was on a steer on a freeway in the wee small hours, from the time I felt the tyre belt seperating until it went pop wasn't very long I was climbing a hill and the familiar thump thump as the belt started coming apart was probably only a few humdred yards until pop So if I was doing 65 MPH instead of 65 kmh things may of been very different Having just typed all of that, got to a big town and just bunged tyres on all the way around the little truck 7 tyres, the bloke fitting them said "even the spare" and words of advice from my Dad ran out my mouth " my spare is my last chance so it has to be the best, yes even the spare" So I guess my pointless ramblings are, if it's on your mind then change them, it makes things a lot more enjoyable to drive when Im not worried about them Paul

  20. How do they damage the turbo ? Not been a smart ass, I thought once the pressure was up a bit the butterfly was pushed open by the exhaust, maybe when they start to seize up I know the guillotine type added a lot of pressure and heavier exhaust valves were needed to stop valves floating I have never heard of issues with the butterfly types that are used on Japanese and European trucks Paul

Back when (heaven forbid) Volvo first came out with N and F series and probably the G series as well there transmissions were not well regarded and didn't last at all in Australia These were full syncro boxes and were smooth like a car, but Australian truck drivers dont use clutches as only girls dicks use a clutch, anyway this was the weak spot for Volvo, when the clutch was used they lasted a million miles With a 12 speed Mack I clutch some gears in some situations, big loads, hard changes on big hills and so on, theres a huge amount of strain if I mess the change up and clunk it in a bit heavy Some blokes laugh but it's cheaoer than fixing stuff, hence my questions about these boxes as the have some synchros, dunno much about them though Thanks for your replies Joey Paul
  23. So these 18 speeds, do we just slam them thru the gears like a Road Ranger or is clutching required for a long life on some shifts ? I know nothing about these transmissions or gear boxes so before jumping into another stupid project I dont really need or have time for I thought some responsible or perhaps irresponsible research The truck appears original, as in not butchered and hacked up which to me is always a good starting point , once things are fairly buggered with it can become a huge job every step along the way Motors rebuilt 150,000 miles ago and trans 180,000 miles ago, to me thats not a huge concern as the trucks over 20 years old It's 106 tons rating, so almost as tough as my R model and comes in pretty heavy at 11 ton tare Only down side to me is the back end is rockwell, and air bags that I have zero experience with Anyway I will mull it over for a bit Paul

Saw a more modern Mack that caught my interest Has EA 7 E tech motor, Mack 18 speed Probably wont purchase but I spotted it for sale a few weeks ago and it's still rolling about in my head So are these motors any good ? It's 2001 build in Australia, so Im saying it could be as old as 1999 and only fitted to a new truck in 2001 What I mean is, Mack Australia buys, or at least did buy motors trans and major components in bulk lots and fitted them to ne trucks as required I dunno if the 18 speeds are as good as the 12 speeds or the E7 as good as the E6 My reasons for that comment is we dont see as many requests for help for E6 or 12 speed transmissions on here That been said, there wont be as many E6 or 12 speeds in everyday work as E7 and 18 speeds So some thoughts on these motors please Paul
