FOR SALE EN707C Engine and R-608F Radiator
1958 F.W.D. replied to smorse54's topic in Parts for Sale
I put the word out on my facebook page, the SPAAMFAA facebook page and a fire dept-related used crap facebook page. If I get any hits I will get them to you through here. -
I grew up in the right-hand seat of two F-Models. First one was a single screw Hayward with a 300 and a 5-speed/2-speed Rockwell rear which my father bought used from the Dallas, Tx. Mack dealer (I recently got all the factory info for both the F's he owned) and it was originally built for a mattress hauler. Dad used it when he was an O/O leased onto Charles E. Danbury, a trailer broker. Dad hauled mostly brand-new trailmobile trailers out of the factory in West Point, Pa. (near Philly.) Later, he became friends with a guy named Harry Muschlegel, who was an O/O leased onto Southwest Freight Lines outta KCMO or KCK I think. Harry went on to get a group of O/O's together and formed this little old operation later known as JEVIC Transportation. Between the Hayward F-Model rotting out and getting worn out, plus now hauling fright, Dad had to switch up to a twin-screw Allentown F-Model with a 300 Plus and a 10-speed. Dad always bragged about how it was a 90+mph truck. I previously mentioned I just recently got all the serial-number specific info on the two trucks including some brochures like the ones pictured above, as well as a brochure on Hayward F-models. If I remember I'll have to scan it and post it here. Lots of good memories in both of those tractors- what I would give to have that Hayward F-Model to restore, but it has been confirmed that it was scrapped.

Winter storage question...
1958 F.W.D. replied to Mikesbucketlistmack's topic in Engine and Transmission
I would strongly advise against any outdoor/under cover storage...even if you buy a good quality "breathable" cover. I dont care how much money you spend on a cover, I dont care how much they claim it is waterproof- It will still trap moisture underneath it, which will in turn lead to oxidation and rust, especially your chrome pieces. Trust me, I speak from experience. Try and find indoor storage somewhere- does not have to be heated, does not have to be pretty, just waterproof and out of the wind. Will do your truck worlds of good. Indoor storage is a win-win, for several reasons. You want to try and run it at LEAST once a month. I try to run mine at least once every 2-3 weeks, to excercise it and to charge the batteries. If the roads are salty or the weather sucks, I dont take it out, but I will run it in the garage for 30-45 mins or so. -Check the protection level of the coolant, make sure it's good for the lowest temperatures your area sees. -Clean the battery terminals, and use a good quality anti-corrosion compound, such as Truk-Lite or an equal product. -I would treat the fuel, but again if you run the truck regularly which you should do, you can put some fresh fuel into it occasionally. Mine is a gasser, so I always add ethanol-formula STA-BIL but try not to keep that much gas in her in the winter months, just enough to run her. When I take her out (again when weather is ok and there is not much salt on the roads) I'll add 5 gallons here and there. -Check all the tire pressures. I know money is probably a concern....it certainly was when I was storing mine outside. At the time, the wife and I were trying to save up to buy a house, and I was paying $150 a month for indoor storage. So figuring we would save some coin, I bought a $300 RV cover, and stored it at her father's gated lot. BIG EFFING MISTAKE. Even to this day, the wife looks at the pitted chrome, and says "I wish we never stored it under that effing cover. We should have kept it at Joels". (the guy who was storing it for me....) Please try to store your truck indoors if at all possible. -Randy Y. -

Vinny, if you are sick, it's because you are walking upright. You need to walk leaning to your left, your equalibrium is all screwed up when you walk straight up and down. -
and your belly leans to the left.........

I have a friend who is a professional Santa Clause. He has coodinated a collection effort of goods and services for a family who has fallen on hard times (with medical issues) in North Coventry Pa. He reached out to me to see if I could deliver "Santa" and the goods on the FWD Firetruck. At 45 miles one-way thats a bit of a stretch for me to go at night (plus having brake light issues...) Is there anyone on here who has a good looking antique firetruck or any kind of truck for that matter in the Boyertown Pa/West Chester/Route 100 area that would be willing to help out? Event to deliver is scheduled for Friday Night, Nov 30. Has to be then due to the news media and other participants being involved. If anyone can help out, please reach out to me here through PM or email me at yardo@rcn.com And yes, I already reached out to Yarnall who unfortunately cannot assist, and 39babymack has another engagement that evening.

Need to get in contact with Mike Yarnall real quick-like. If anyone has his cell number, could you please call him (I dont expect you to give me his number of course) and tell him '58 FWD needs to yak at him quick and to please get on here and private message me his cell number OR email it to me at yardo@rcn.com THANKS!!!!

Mack engines in Non Macks?
1958 F.W.D. replied to super9's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Simon-Duplex, a fire chassis builder experimented with Mack drivelines, three or four were made, but it never took off. A shame because many fire departments, especially in the Pa, area where Mack was a stronghold for years would have bought them. -
I spent the day today (as a Fire Marshal/Code Official) visiting several "large retailers" in my jurisdiction discussing Black Friday with the managers of said large retailers and reminding them of their responsibility to maintain paths of egress/not blocking fire exits and their responsibility to enforce their maximum occupancy numbers- because if myself or my staff observe crowds above and beyond what their occupancies say they can have, we will shut them down in a heartbeat, and yes virginia, it will take several hours for us to make sure the store is fully clear of all occupants and then we will do a head count, one by one as each and every person is allowed to re-enter the store....very slowwwwwwwly and carefully........ And they were also told that myself and my staff may or may not be visiting stores, and would neither confirm or deny whether we would be in uniform or not....... and yes, I can neither confirm or deny the fact that I can be a prick.....in the name of public safety. No Warwick RI nightclub fire-like deaths on my watch.

I absolutely, positively cannot shift my FWD without double clutching. No matter how hard I try, no matter what I do, it just cannot be done.

In the 80's, Mack experimented with turbine power. There were two Superliner conventionals and a Cruiseliner cabover with turbines. The Cruiseliner is currently in the Mack museum. It is not in running condition, for display only. The whereabouts or disposotion of the tutbine powered Superliners has been lost to time.

Antifreeze
1958 F.W.D. replied to leversole's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
coolant hydrometer on bottom, battery hydrometer on top. this thread got me thinking that I have not checked the freeze level of the firetruck yet this year, so this morning while I was doing some yardwork, I lit her up and let her run for 45 mins, and then checked- I'm good for -20F, plenty for my neck of the woods as we RARELY see anything below Zero F. Once in a while we'll get down to maybe -2 or 3 but thats it. Measuring your freeze level is critical if you have slow coolant leaks like I do (and may old trucks do) and you add water or mix constantly throughout the summertime. -
Vlad there are many many deer here in the USA, and the problem is very bad in the east, and becomes even worse as you get closer to populated areas- the deer are being driven from their land by development. The rural areas right outside of cities are very overpopulated to the point that some places hold no-limits hunts for a weekend or two.

Coolant filters are more common on fleet-spec units, especially ones in fleets that have extremely strong preventive maintenance programs. I dont think I have ever seen a coolant filter on anything other than fleet-owned tractors. They are about the size of a Fram PH8A oil filter (318 Mopile) and have a filter element of course, but also have a time-release solid chemical core that slowly dissolves treatment into the system.
