  1. Nice shots, the M series Mack is most likely a M-65AX or BX. Just a bit too big to be a M-50AX Rick
  2. Yep, that is all UD, little 10 toner.
  3. AHHH That would have been a 10UD, small cab, able to carry 10 ton or so. Rick
  4. Correct, Those had slipped my mind at the time. The CL-350 is a discussion all to it's own. One of my favorites to wear the Mack name. Rick
  5. Dave, Super shots of 1 of the 2 M-45SX's in the Bigge fleet. PM-1 & PM-2, both were originally rock trucks, painted red. Both have DDC 16v-71 for power. Thanks for sharing. Rick
  6. Yes, well almost every one was rear wheel drive only. The exception being the M-404X or Mack-Pack, it was a 4x4 pivot steer, During the development of the LR series of off highway haulers, and the use of Cummins or DDC power instead of Mack developing new bigger engine all comes down to economics. Since the projected sales of the off highway trucks was & would always be limited, the need to "re-invent the wheel" of big power was simply not cost effective. Thus installing Cummins or DDC power of much larger displacement & horse power (of that time period) made the most sense. Also, please understand that for that time, it was less about the HP of the engine, but rather the torque needed to power thru the planetary axles when hauling the maximum load. Yes, it would seem that the M-series was offered long enough in terms of years, but thet were never produced (or planned to be produced) in the quantities of a B-61. Keep in mind that when the B model hit the market, the engine, transmission, chassis & running gear had already been in production for many years, and had been constantly improved upon . This is normal for high volume production of any product, trucks or otherwise. The LR & M series were just not a high enough volume to warrant the development of bigger engines & transmissions. Mack did pioneer the development of the Planidrive axle, which started out as the wheel end hub reduction added to the largest of time Mack top load axle as used in the LR's. When the M series appeared, the wheel end hub reduction "planidrive" had been improved with the addition of the all new Mack designed & manufactured off highway axle where the diff was now a front load type. Hope this helps, Rick
  7. Hey Vinster, At a guess, a M-30X or M-35X. Not big enough to be a M-35AX (they were fitted with 18:00x33 tires, 12v71 road oilers & a bigger rad), and too wide in the front to be a M-25X or smaller. Rick
  8. Nice thread, Yeah man, 57BCR! not overwhelmed, but certainly enjoying the heck out of it all. Sorry, been very busy in my shop with work for clients, other wise i would have been all over this one from the beginning. The M series was the last of the Mack mining line. Now lets see the predecessor of the M, the LR! The LR chassis replaced the FCSW & FK, FW, with both single & tandem drive units. The LR's also introduced Mack's new "Planidrive" axles. Models included: LR, LV, LVX, LVXT, LRX, LRSW, LRVSW, LYSW. Rick
  9. Most of the off highway dump bodies used on the M series Mack's were built by Heil. There were a few specialty offerings for the coal industry, but Heil was the norm. Rick
  10. Right on Bob!! The west coast LT's were popular with the big gas Hall-Scott 440. Rick
  11. lets not forget about Humphrey Bogart in "They drive by Night", or Roy Schinder in "Sorcerer" Rick
  12. so THAT is the family running the Mack dealer near the intersection of I-81 & I-90........... LMAO Rick
  13. In looking at the photos of these fantastic Palumbo RD-800's, the 300 & Allison combo was very common particularly in a quarry or mine. # 1175 has a lighter suspension, as the rear would be a 65K & the front a 21K. Meanwhile # 1176, aside from larger 14:00x24 boots, it has the 23K front & the RVI 80K outboard planetary drives. Interesting, as one of the largest limestone quarry's in western New York used to run several fleets of RD-800SX's all spec'd in a similar fashion. 400 or 427, Allison CL(B)T-754, 23K front, RVI 80K planetary rears on RVI spring & rod suspension. These were used in the same roll as we would see at Palumbo, to haul crush to the primary feed for the batch plant. whether it be a asphalt or concrete plant the use is the same. At the same time in other areas of the plant Cat 769 & 773, Terex 3307, Mack M-35AX and later Volvo A-40's were used to haul the shot rock to the crushers. Good memories, Rick
  14. Close, It is a M-15SX, these were built with 80K Mack rears on hard bar, "SX" being the 6 wheel off highway, and this was the only M series to NOT have planetary axles. The single drive rock truck M-15X is equipped with a planetary drive axle. In the world of tandem drive M series Mack's from smallest to largest: M-15SX M-32SX M-45SX M-70SX M-75SX M-100SX There were additional letters added to the end if the chassis was ordered for special applications, IE; C = coal, T = tractor. Also of note, one other M series with a tandem was the CL-350, designed & built to compete with the Hayes HDX-1000, Pacific P-16 & KW 850. Although the rear tandem axles & suspension were taken from the earlier LRVSW platform. Rick
  15. Classic look of the beast known as Animal Crackers. Later on, after this photo was taken the truck was refitted with Rockwell planetary drive axles and grew to just over 11' wide at the rear. Casey ran other trucks, long since gone, such as a huge KW 849, a LMSW, F model, CL-713 and so on. Today the fleet, last i knew was all KW, T-800W tilt hoods. Rick
  16. Thanks Paul Another truck nut / model builder in PA obtained the majority of the Theile archive of photos just before the end. The company fabricated several very heavy custom bodies for all sorts of industries. Rick
  17. Thiele (sp) made the body. I believe these were build for the Fishkills land fill. Rick
  18. Ouch, bet the poor bugger failed physics! Rick
  19. OH YEAH, any more non-snowing photos of that sweet Brock wrecker? I see a model in need of being built.!! Ap40
  20. Yeah man I dig both! She looks pretty good in black, used to see big & little together in yellow & black long time ago. Rick
  21. Nice shot of the ex-Hake RD-888SX, how about the Ex-Higgins "Little Henry" Hendrickson 8x4 behind it! Rick
  22. Bob, Yep you asked me about it once before, sadly i had to part ways with it, but it is still in my mind. I will look for the SN. Rick
