I lived in Chicago for 5 years and worked there longer. Like any city there are safe and un safe areas. If you had been there 10 years earlier, you might have been confuse by all the Bristol Lodekka's and Damiler Fleetlines running around "the Loop". (that I maintained)

If you like music and the blues esp, there is no place like it.

I am not a city person, and did not like living there, but I walked home many late nights (or early mornings)  from listening to friends at a "gig".

I also 1st drove semi's in the city. (ok I drove a Mack 5 spd bobtail a few mile when I lived in Chelmsford ,Ma but that doesn't really count). Learn to drive semi in Chicago and the rest is easy.

I used to go to Chicago Firebrick fairly often and I would get there at night before they opened and I would just pull over on the side of the street and sleep until they opened the next morning. Nobody ever bothered me and I never saw any "suspicious" looking activity going on. They were up on 79th. St. somewhere I think. The only place I was afraid to park on the street at was at Martin-Marietta in River Rouge, Mi.

Driving a truck in Chicago was a piece of cake compared to Boston or Philadelphia, at least I thought so. I did always have my low underpass map handy when I went to Chicago though, even though I pulled a flatbed 90% of the time. 🤣

l don't remember a low underpass map. But l do remember to get to HoJo's there where two bridges you took in the center to clear. And one you had to get all the way over to the left with oncoming traffic. Now, l had TWO New York city maps incase some SOB stole one l could find my way out again.  :thumb:     .....Hippy

I have been very fortunate. I never ran into anything like that. There was a few times I slowed right down to nothing.. and stuck my head out the window to make sure some of them are just not marked. and I have no idea why they’re not marked.???

I pulled O/D loads into Boston and Philly, and since I grew up around Boston, its streets were known to me. Also pulled legal loads out of Philly.

New York is known for mis-marked overpass heights. Many times they are marked 6" lower than they are, but sometimes they are less than marked. Makes for a bad situation.

Even pulling O/D with a permit, you can't count on the permit office for not routing you into a low overpass. I have had that many times.

There is NO used too! They still do most often when collage starts. And the flip flop wearers follow GPS and can't read the signage. lol

even with all the warning signs that are posted this till happens.. you got to be kidding?  But then again, many people who rent box trucks are clue less.  they will even pull into a drive through at a fast food joint. seen it! oh well...

Yeah, but trucks are not allowed on any of the "parkways" even pick-ups used to get tickets for being on there.

when i ran manhatten with the oversize, 99% of the time i had police escort both in and out of the city as we would have 4-6 cops working traffic for us. so going in they would close down intersections for me to turn and made sure i got there, and then going out they would do the same thing to make sure i got out safely. usually 2 or 4 for traffic control, and 2 to keep pedestrians out of our way and make sure the trucks, machines, and their contents did not grow legs and walk away.
