Rear end ratio

So the rear drive on the super liner is broken and we bought a frame cutoff with the suspension and and a empty front drive and the rear is good and in it. The guy we got the cutoff from said the ratio was 4:42. That's what we need. But the housing is rusty and I cleaned it up but I can't make out any numbers on the tag. Is there any other way to tell? If I pull it out are the gears marked? I want to take the guys word for it but we all know what happens if I did that...

As you look at the front of carrier there is a flat spot to left of input shaft, wire brush this area should be a set of numbers of ratio.   terry

Yup i did that but I can't make out any of the numbers.

Are the brakes caged so you can spin the yoke and count the revolutions?

No they aren't but I can def. do that... Not sure why I didn't think of that. Thank you guys for the help.

The MOST sharp way to determine a ratio is to remove covers and count the actual number of teeth.

You sure can also count revs. But you should keep accuracy along the count. As more sets of revs you do as more sharp figure could be achieved.

I.e. you better make 10 or 20 rews and then divide the count to get result correct.

You say the rear screw is in the cut off? If so, on most rears the numbers you are looking for are stamped on the outer end of the pinion shaft...but I'm not sure about Mack, I've never looked at mine.
