OUCH for Volvo And MACK

From KS.

Ouch. From May 11, 2015, through March 8, 2016, Volvo built model year 2016-2017 Volvo VNL, VNX and VNMs and Mack brand 2016-2017 Titans without a roll pin on the steering shafts, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

If the roll pin is missing, the lower steering shaft may disconnect from the junction block. Nice.

And as if that’s not enough, the bolt connecting the upper steering shaft to the lower steering shaft also may not have been tightened.

Both scenarios of course result in a complete loss of steering.

The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) thinks around 19 steering shafts provided to Volvo may not have had the roll pin installed, but they really have no idea.

This is what happens when you care more about profitability that the actual product you’re building, pushing suppliers too far for cheap pricing and most likely sourcing from developing countries.

The defect is so significant that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is urging owners to take affected vehicles out of service as soon as possible or face possible penalties, including being placed out of service.

In an “urgent inspection bulletin,” FMCSA noted that driving an affected truck could be considered a violation of FMCSA safety regulation 49 C.F.R. §396.7, which prohibits operation of a vehicle in a condition likely to cause an accident or a breakdown.

Motor carriers that violate applicable regulations may face enforcement action including, but not limited to, civil penalties and a finding that the defect constitutes an out-of-service condition.

Where's KS when you need some insiders insight?  I'm side tracking you thread for a minute Paul, how much longer until BMT gives KS unlimited posting abilities so he can keep the trucking news thread relevant and informative?  P.S. Thanks for posting this story Paul.

The problems we face today exist because the people who work for a living are outnumbered by the people who vote for a living.

The government can only "give" someone what they first take from another.

This is from KS and the additional comments are his opinion on the matter.     Paul

Good to see the information getting out here somehow but the news thread seems to be pretty barren since KS ran out of his posting ability.  I remember there seemed to always be something new to read in the trucking news thread so even on slow days there was something to read on BMT.

PM the powers in charge to ask for KS to have unlimited data for the news thread.

In today's world I would of thought that so long as it didn't blow black smoke and the exhaust smelt like roses no one would of cared if it suffered complete steering loss?

I hope no accidents were caused due to this fault.

There have been 4 accidents so far.

I gather it is the steering shaft (column) connected to the box not the box itself. The roll pin would be on the shaft to the steering box itself.

The recall affects 2016-2017 VNL, VNX and VNM trucks. Some trucks may be missing a roll pin on the steering shafts, potentially disconnecting the lower steering shaft from the junction block. Additionally, the bolt connecting the upper steering shaft to the lower steering shaft may not have been properly tightened. Both situations can cause the steering shaft to separate.

The recall also affects certain 2016-2017 Mack Titan trucks, according to an FMCSA safety recall alert.

Volvo and FMCSA are strongly recommending that owners refrain from driving affected vehicles until the final remedy – replacing the two-piece steering shaft with a one-piece shaft – is available. Initial notices were sent out to vehicle owners on March 14. Owners should expect a second notice when the final remedy is available. -
