  4. Hi Glenn, I've attached a picture...would this be the 300+ engine? If so, is it also known as the "320" engine? Thanks so much for your help! Jeff...
  5. Thanks Glenn...are you saying that by adding an intercooler from a 320 or 350 tip turbine motor that my HP would be brought up to that level? I have heard of the 350 tip turbine, but not a 320...is that the same as the 300+ motor I've heard about? Thanks, Jeff...
  6. Hello all, I have an 1982 RD686SX steel nose cab and chassis (it used to be a roll-off) 18 & 58 axles, triple framed with NO frame spread...was garaged for most of its life.. I want to shorten it up and make it into a lowbed tractor, but I'd like some more power than the Tip Turbine EM6-283 it has now makes My question is: can a charge air cooled E6 be mounted in an R600 model truck with a steel nose?
  7. Anyone know what Cummins is in an R738? I know the R737 had an NHC250 and the R747 had an NHC290. Thanks!

  9. does anyone know where you can buy those "Lollypop" fender turn signals?
  10. Greg, Good choice with the hugger orange cab/fenders and black chassis and running gear. I've got an 82 steel nose RD686SX roll-off that I am both rebuilding and shortening into a tractor and that's my choice for colors. I am a huge fan of red and black, but want to do something a little different.
  11. My book says SWD 59 is 60,000 lb. rears...To my knowledge, Mack never made 70,000 lb. rears. There should be a tag on the front bogie with a bunch of numbers that will tell you which carriers you have and the gear ratio.
  12. The +3 cabs started in 1973. First year of the non-metal dashboard. Interior color was usually tan, but black on some Western R models.
  13. We used to say "pull it out of 4th gear, go get a cup of coffee, then come back and pull it into 5th gear"! LOL
  14. Hi Guys, I have some old Dupont "Dulux code" paint books and chips. The colors listed are the following: Yellow is 93-24067 (for the record, this yellow is more like the "Caterpillar yellow" than the "John Deere yellow") Blue is 93-24160 Orange is 93-60659 Green is 93-65541 Red is 93-77968 White is 93-21667 Black is 93-005 Any automotive paint dealer can cross these numbers to PPG, Sikkens or any other brand of paint you wish to use. Hope this helps! Jeff...
  15. This probably only helps a little, but here are the 1970's R700 series that came with Cummins engines: R731 Cummins NH 230 R733 Cummins Super 250 or 270 R737 Cummins NHC 250L R747 Cummins NHC 290L R759 Cummins VT 903L R761 Cummins V 903 R763 Cummins NTC 335 R765 Cummins NTA 370L R767 Cummins NTC 350L Jeff...
  16. I always call Mack HQ at (610) 709-3011 and ask for customer sevice. Give them your truck's VIN and ask them to MAIL you a copy of the truck's line sheet. The line sheet will list information about your truck's major components (engine, trans, rears, axles, bogies, etc.) Don't ask for a fax, as the old line sheets are hard to read from a fax copy. Good Luck! BTW, I've got a 72 RD795SX tractor that I'm in the process of restoring...I hope to get some pictures up soon! Jeff...
  17. Rob, Mike is right on...all my books say that the "55" in the R700 series is either a 1693T or 1693TA Cat motor. The line sheet will tell which one. I believe the 1693 was the forerunner to the 3406. Good find...you've got a pretty rare truck there. BTW, the R753 came with a 1674 Cat, althought I've never seen one of those! Jeff...
  18. mackmodelb, As Freightrain said, dividing 2100 by 500 yields a ratio of 4.20 According to my book, a 4.28 ratio was available from Mack for the CRD-78 carrier. Good luck with the switchover! Jeff...
  19. Hey folks, Anybody know where I can buy some of those "glitter" shift knobs that you see on the two stick transmissions? My web search hasn't come up with anything...I know they usually come in different colors and shapes. I have attached a picture of what I'm talking about. Thanks! Jeff
  20. Thad, I've never seen an R700 series with a CAT engine, but anything's possible, I guess. If you call customer service at Mack at (610) 709-3011 with the complete VIN, they can tell you what engine the truck originally came with. They can even fax you a line sheet. Good Luck! Jeff...
  21. Thad, Hi...read your post about the R700 you were considering having shipped cross country. I am looking at an old Mack in Colorado and thinking about having it shipped to me in Virginia. Do you have the contact information for the trucking company that was going to haul your truck? If so, could you pass it along? The guy I'm looking to buy the truck from isn't a dealer or anything and has no contacts out there and I have no idea where to start looking for a carrier! Thanks...Jeff
  22. Thad, If I remember correctly, the engine is 865 cu and is rated at 325 HP...not much by today's standards, but a lot 40 years ago. Only thouble with those motors is they have twin turbos (which have a tendency to blow) and will kill you with fuel economy. The good news with the R-700 series is that the hood is long enough to take any engine you want to put in it! Jeff...
  23. Good choice on the Mack! Mack's are made for dirt work...I've been driving Mack dump trucks for 21 years and there's nothing better for on-off road work! The shift troubles you are experiencing is common for people who move from Fuller transmissions to Mack transmissions. With a Fuller transmission, the timing between gears is the same for each gear, but with a Mack transmission, the timing between gears gets a little longer as you shift up through each gear. For example, 2nd to 3rd is a longer wait than 1st to 2nd, etc. The old joke with the shift from 4th to 5th took so much time that you could take it out of 4th, go get a cup of coffee, and come back and shift into 5th! If you are in a real bind, you can shift with the Jake on, which will bring the RPM's down quicker and you can upshift quicker. I don't recommend this as a daily practice, as it's too much "shock" on the driveline. Practice the timing and you'll have no trouble!
  24. Hey Tim, DHS? Do they have a web site or anything? More questions... I know the B-81 series came with a Mack motor and the B-83 series was Cummins powered, what makes the B-87 different? And waht is the difference between th B-87SX and the B873SX? Thanks!
