interesting to read last two post = "ole reliable" = sweet running. possibly due to simple technology was used to built  work trucks in the day. short version == got a phone call yesterday while CT was having heavy rain. driver says his '17 KW triaxle dump had a slight problem. he went to raise passenger window = the door locks started cycling but the window wouldn't work; same for drivers door. I said used the hand crank !- duh there isn't one. there is a module in the door. door apart , raise window by hand .unplug module..  point is "new" junk NOT reliable anymore.

It's terrible how all this newer stuff is a POS!

Yes there are shims under the bearing covers. I removed some to get to .002 endplay, will remove another to get to the prescribed preload. This will be a different adventure for me as I have never played with a trans much before in fact only once when I tore the 3spd from my model A down. Just a LITTLE bit different than these. This measuring torque to determine preload is also something new for me. The only time I recall setting preload is on wheel bearing and, IIRC, I torque them to 200ft lbs, turn the wheel to set the bearings, then loosen them off and torque to 50ft lbs for proper preload. Something like that anyways. I will check the end play on the main shaft and the lash on the gears today, if they are out of spec I will require guidance to make the necessary adjustments.

I know it’s your transmission but with .002 endplay I would call it good, the only place I have set gear backlash is on PTO’s, different gasket thickness’s, there is no way to set backlash between main and countershaft gears. Terry:MackLogo:

Yes the rear cover is flush so, if both shafts work in tandem then the adjustment should be able to be made from either end. That being confirmed, I will do my adjusting from the back. Don't want to sound like a dimwit by repeating stuff, just want to make sure I understand correctly. I will go out and see what I can accomplish and report back.

It is definitly set on the rear of back countershaft.    terry:MackLogo:

  4. But when you preload does that take all your end play away?  Yeah them figures for new and used bearings are right on, I never used the string and scale, I used the dial indicator, don’t remember how many thousands though.  Terry:MackLogo:

  5. Joey I looked in one of my old Mack manuals it says on reassembly leave top main shaft out of back box bolt cases together and wrap string around counter shaft and set at so many pounds pull, I never done that to much crap! I used the dial indicator after assembled and set at so many thousands but I don’t remember the exact number.  Terry:MackLogo:

  6. Yeah rear box will work to, some don’t have PTO openings, the rear bearing on rear countershaft is held in by a tapered bearing towards the front, the rear cover  and shims press on the bearing outer race to set endplay. Hope I’m explaining this so you understand?   Terry:MackLogo: no snap rings

  7. For some reason I thought the PTO gear was fixed, if nothing else it can be done on the tail end of countershaft with the rear cover off. But I think the PTO gear is pressed on so tight you don’t have to worry about it moving to check this.  Terry:MackLogo:

  8. Been along time since i have done this, but take a dial indicator with a magnetic base and mount it somewhere around PTO , find a fixed gear on countershaft , configure indicator to touch it, take a small pry bar to slide fixed gear forward and back to check end play, then there are shims under countershaft rear cover piece to add or take out shims for desired endplay. Joey might have a different way to measure this.  Hope this helps     terry:MackLogo: Think i used the PTO gear to do this
