  1. Thanks Geoff this does appear to be the problem.I spoke to the auto electrican and he said that he did feed a current to the diode trio block and the alternator then charged. He is a young guy who has built a good business for himself but admitted to me he had never seen this type of alternator before having worked on more up to date vehicles.I let him read your posts and asked me to thank you for furthering his knowledge.I was impressed by this because he may never see another alternator like this but he still wanted to know how it worked.A rareity these days among younger folk..... Paul
  2. Thanks very much Geoff, that explains clearly what we were wondering.I wasnt present when he tested it so I dont know exactly how/what he done.I wonder if that part is readly availible over here.I'll get my son to get a google search going...Thanks again. Paul
  3. Thanks for the replys...I should have pointed out the pictures were taken before work started, more to show what type of alternator is on the truck. So far we have ... Replaced belts Cleaned all connections Done voltage tests at batterys..12.4v Voltage test at alternator also 12.4v Test lamp also lights up across the altenator terminals as decribed by Paul No change in voltage at alternator with engine running. Alternator put out 14.6v on test bench...but stays at 12.4 when in truck. The auto electrician we went to has a great reputation in our area but is a young guy.He did admit to me he has never seen an alternator with only 2 terminals. All the alternators he is use to have 3 terminals. The 3rd is connected to the charging light on the dash. This shows the driver if the vehicle is charging but also excites the alternator on start up.With only 2 terminals and no light on the dash he was wondering how the alternator is excited on start up. With all our batterys, wireing, connections and grounds checking out as in good condition we are scratching our heads wondering why the alternator will charge on the bench but not in the truck..... Thanks for reading guys. Paul
  4. Yes.tested the alternator with a lamp across both terminals and then a multi meter...no output when in the truck but gives 14.3V on the test rig...... Paul
  5. Another run around the sun..done!!! Happy Birthday Adkat..enjoy. Paul
  6. Didnt see your vote in time..I'd have gone for no.1...Good luck with it .It ia a fantastic truck. Paul
  7. Hi all,the alternator on our Cruiseliner is not charging. It is a L/N 2500 JB unit.We have replaced drive belts,checked/cleaned all connections and grounds still no charge. We took the alternator to an auto electrician and he tested it on his bench test rig and it worked perfect....What are we missing??? He was surprised there is no charging light on the dash, his question was what excites the aternator on start up? We confirmed with Nathen in the UK that his Cruiseliner does not have a charging light either. We feel its some thing simple or something not common on Europian vehicles.Any ideas??? Paul
  8. Welcome to the forum.Love your Superliner.Best of luck with it and keep us up to date on your progress....More pictures please.... Paul
  9. I ran outta likes for today but loving this thread...Nameing your truck is personal and should mean something to you.Our Cruiseliner will be called "Love Machine" after Pig Pen's from Convoy because thats the one that started the passion for a Cruiseliner. My wife calls it "The Mistress" because she said a mistress would be cheaper and she caught me in this rather dubious position last week confirming her suspicions🤣 My suggestion for your truck would be "Blue Thunder",if you would like a reference to her colour and chrome...Just my 2cents worth... Paul
  10. Looks great to me Paul.....you simply transfered the dirt from the Bullbar to yourself...works everytime🤣 Paul
  11. Some of my kit collection...Gonna build them when Im too old to work on the real thing!!!!! Paul
  12. Dont get the worship thing myself.I mean theres musicians and actors/actresses whos work I enjoy but worship them??? Never..The Mack alter is the place for worship🤣 Paul
  13. By the way the guy looking at our truck in the second picture was a Mack mechanic in New York for 10 years....He was delighted to see a Cruiseliner again... Paul
  14. We took our Cruiseliner to Irelands only pure truck show on Sunday.Being the small country we are most shows are a mix of cars, pick ups and trucks. We couldn't get over the reaction we got.For a start she was the ONLY American truck there. The interest shown in her was nothing short of amazing even down to two offers to buy her....er no thanks. We waited for 46 years to get her so we are not parting with her.We were there from 10am to 5pm and we answered that many questions about her I had lost my voice......A great day,we were very proud of her.We were told she was the talk of the show by the guys running it...
  15. Me too..just watched High Plains Drifter the other night......
  16. Great when you get to paint stage.Kinda makes it all come together.Really really sweet R Model.Best of luck with them... Paul
  17. Dont know if it was availible in the US or OZ but the very best gearbox Iv ever used ( from a drivers point of view ) was a ZF 16 speed Econosplit.4 hi 4 low and split on each gear.Smooth easy to use and always a gear for every situation...and could be floated in the main gears but required the clutch for splits.Great gearbox..... Paul
  18. I really dont know if Detroits ever made it to 1ml but I remember an advertisement for the Bedford TM with the 8V 92 claiming it was a million mile truck.....then we are talking about the world of advertising where they would say mass in latin if they knew the words just to sell somethimg... Paul
  19. Welcome to BMT.Thats a fine R model,I wouldnt pass the chance of buying it at that money even if you had to get a used motor for it..... Paul
  20. My apoloiges,I spelt Gardner the way it is said instead of the the correct spelling....They have to have been one of the best engines ever made.Reliaible economical and long life span as well as being a great drivers engine.Maybe a large understressed engine is the way to go...... Paul
  21. Yes I did drive Gardener powered trucks.A Dennison with an 8LXB and an ERF with a 6LXB.The ERF was a little underpowered but the Dennison was right on the money.Coupled to a 13 speed Fuller the Dennison pulled like a train and went like hell.Maximum torque came up at 975 rpm and stayed untill 1800 rpm.The slow reving nature of the Gardener matched the Fuller perfectly and was a joy to drive. All Gardener engine crankshafts were vertically and horizontailly braced and bottom end failures were almost unheard of.However Gardener were stuck in their ways and stedfastly refused to turbocharge their engines. It wasnt untill the business was sold to the Hawker Siddley group that turbo Gardeners became availible. It was too late, they had lost to much market share.Renowned for long life and as GW said sipping fuel it is well reported that more than half of gardeners ever made are still in service.A work of art to look at,I too would love to have one just to take to shows. The Skipper of a fishing trawler I once serviced told me he would not go to sea in anything but a Gardener engined boat.I will now tell a story which most would not believe and I would find hard to believe but I was there I saw this...One frosty morning I was asked to go to a saw mill were a Gardener engined hyd.power pack would not start.I got there and was shown to the engine.I quickly found the battery was finnished and fitted a new one.The engine started first push of the button and I checked it was charging. With all being good I just had to ask where is the rad??? With out blinking the owner said it never had one.I was amazed as he explained the 6LX ran from morning untill night for 16 years at about 450 rpm and never had a rad.I stood watching it tick away and shaking my head wondering how just how is that possible......Hard to believe but I can swear on all my loved ones lives its true.... Paul
  22. Wow that Pete took a battering. You know you hear about the flooding on the news but its only when you see the pictures someone like yourself took that brings it home how bad it was,not a 3min clip on the news... Paul
  23. Great to see your recovering from the horror you all faced 6 months ago.Ever upwards and onwards is the saying here in Ireland. The LJ is fantastic and looks none the worst for what happened.Your helper is gonna keep that LJ perfect...well done!!! Paul
