Macks First Glider kit
1961H67 replied to mrsmackpaul's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Very interesting! I’m trying to track down some history on a 1955 LTH I bought a couple weeks ago. As to where it was delivered new . And what the original engine was. I am going to do a post on it ,when I get more info, I have the history of it from 1964 till now, but am working on the late 50s ( according to the original owner’s great nephew) it was sent to Alaska, and was refitted with a 318 to use in the colder conditions ,, I’m still working on finding more information. Thanks for the picture of the glider kit!- 1 reply

I’m looking for the clips, fasteners, not sure what they are called that hold the 3 chrome trim pieces on the hood, I’m going through a lot of my L stuff, trying to pick the best and some of those clips are missing, I haven’t looked at any automobile clips yet, just thought someone might have ran into the same issue, thanks Dean -

Yep brings back many memories, I had several good teachers on the old Cummins, running around those o rings with your pocket screwdriver was a must. -

Back in the day Cummins made a “Plug “ that we would drop in the liners to check for a rolled o ring when we were rebuilding, I was in my 20s and I would question how that rubber o ring would distort a steel liner . The older guys would tell me if that plug hit a tight spot,, pull that liner back out and you will find a rolled o ring . -

I had a driver call me years ago, 230 Cummins, said it ran hot,, and was knocking,, shut it off and it wouldn’t start back ( locked up) I drove about 30 minutes to him ,, it started up when it cooled , no knock, sounded ok , drove it back to shop and pulled the pan and you could see liner scoring on one cylinder, probably would have did what yours did if it had ran much more, that liner is not that thick in the o ring groves, It’s hard to tell if it was overheated before you got, I think you got some good advice from the other guys , and good call on your part to go through the injectors . You won’t have to worry about it when you head out on a long road trip. -

My 51 LJ has the same set up, not sure if they have that but may know where you can find one, Call Ralph Mahoney & Sons, you can find there numbers on the internet. I put a Jake brake on my 220 Cummins and spoke with Tom Mahoney, Super Nice people. He fixed me up with all the gaskets I needed. -

Im glad ( under the circumstances) that you got it in the shop before the weather gets messy. I have a 220 parts manual if you need it , I’ll send it up , the part numbers are old but Cummins can still change them over. -

I got busy working for a few weeks and haven’t done much to the LJ ,, can’t complain about the work,, I need the money to support my “Truck Addiction “ went to a local truck show today, in Cherokee,NC . A friend of many years brought his B73 ,, When he got it back in the 80s it was a single axle day cab, with a Mack engine,, he put it on a newer model tandem air ride, and a turned up 400 Cummins,, it may not be noticeable from the picture ,, but he added 6 inches to the back of the hood, fenders, radiator are set forward, gives plenty of room for Horton air fan and more room to access the engine,, So I had a good dose of motivation today! -

I can’t recall seeing that happen before, I have had the top flange break and drop the complete liner, probably all caused by setting for years,,, mine may be the same way. Hopefully just cylinder kits , bearings and gaskets. It’s just a big hassle to pull it having to take care of all the perfect paint. -

O my ! Im sorry about the engine problem ,, I have had a few Cummins getting coolant in the pan , hopefully when you pull the pan you can add a little pressure while it’s still full of coolant and see were it’s dripping down at ,, I have the same concern about my 220 because even though I was the last to drive it with a load , and it ran great,, it’s been setting since 1990s , I have started it and it’s full of coolant, but I’ve not worked it. -

It’s a universal fuse box, it’s got 12 fuses, it’s even got some ground locations ( probably want needs many on a all steel interior) it has lights that come on if a fuse blows,, I ran a positive from a master disconnect switch and grounded the other side, There aren’t that many circuits to wire up , I am hoping this box will simplify it some -

That Bed will look nice with new wood, I see what you were talking about the cross members, I have bought some at Fleetpride for some trailers, maybe check if they have the same size. And yes that L cab is roomy! 2 nice rides for sure. -
I like it , no matter how it got there! My thinking is if that steering wheel is molded brown someone ordered it that way? Hopefully someone with way more B model expertise then me can help you.

The movie 'Maximum Overdrive' and old Macks
1961H67 replied to Jamaican Bulldog's topic in Mack on the Silver Screen
I have a great Maximum Overdrive story,, much too long to go into detail here,, Very short version,, a friend of mine was working at the White dealer in Wilmington NC , Stephen King came in and wanted to buy some trucks, My friend rode him in one, and he told him he was going to make a movie there ( and much of the film was shot in Wilmington) my friend said it sounded kinda crazy to him! King bought several trucks, I can’t remember how many, but the Western Star with the clown face was one and the wrecker that crashed the 2 newlyweds was one ( actually it was the shop wrecker they were using) He went into more detail about the whole deal . But that’s a little history i can share .
