  1. I’ll start with a picture of the first time I saw this truck, and is probably good that I start a topic on it so later on I can read it and remember some of the things I have learned about it, and some of the interesting people I have talked to concerning it, and hopefully someone will have some more information on it. It may take me several days to remember and post what I have learned so far. I saw it parked on the side of the road leading to a truck show we were having in Waynesville NC in May 2022 , it wasn’t up where all the trucks were, just setting with no one around it . My Grandson and Me walked down to see it ,, it’s very rare for a LT of any kind to be seen here in the mountains of NC , we stayed till the show was over and never saw anyone, no one knew who brought it but I did look under it and saw it had a V8 Detroit,, so I took a couple pictures and left scratching my head! With no clue who brought it or what the meaning of the odd name “ 10 Tucky “ was all about.
  2. Great job! I’m glad you got it home. It’s a breath of fresh air seeing a young man excited about an old Mack ! Hopefully you can do better than me,, I started driving my LJ when I was your age , fresh out of High School,,, so don’t let up on it until you get it the way you want it while you’re young.,, paint and parts are much more expensive today then ever,, but they will keep going up so just keep plugging along, try not to put it on the back burner for 20 years like I did, hopefully you can enjoy it for years , and I hope you have it when you’re 66 years old! And YES please put parking brake chambers on at least one drive axle. Reach out anytime for assistance.
  3. I’m like you I like the trucks but there was too much drama. I knew nothing about Alaska before I found this truck, I’ve never been there. I got most of my information from John C Millers nephew, he got the truck after Mr Miller passed away and had worked with him on the North Slope. The road they took in 1964 was not where the Dalton Hwy is today, they circled around the mountains with those dozers dragging all that equipment. Matthew Lindsey’s Father knew John C Miller . Maybe I’ll start with the history of this truck from when it was built and work up to the Alaska history because it’s actually had 4 lives from one extreme to the other.
  4. I’ll put some pictures on my phone and put the history with them,, It was one of the first ICE road trucks. I have also seen videos of some special built Mack’s up there back before the Dalton Highway was built,, I have talked to several people who worked in Prudehoe Bay with Mr Miller it was nothing like ICE road truckers ,, it was brutal.
  5. It definitely has room for a 12V71 , They replaced the original Cummins with the 318 in the early 60s ( as ge did with all the trucks he took to Alaska) They hauled those D7s to Fairbanks in the winter of 64 with it when the Yukon River was frozen hard because there wasn’t a bridge until later . I’ll have to post the history on it and a few pictures when I get a cold rainy day. It’s an interesting old truck.
  6. We got the last truck show of the year in today,, great weather and show in Cherokee NC , good to talk to everyone. Its going to be time to put them away for the winter,, My Grandson and Me have had fun with the LJ this summer, hopefully we can do some next year, we took the LTH along today , it was a all day trip,, Rolling in at Sunset.
  7. Yes you are correct! That would make life hard without power steering.
  8. I found it and took a screenshot,,, I love that look!
  9. Yes they are Michelins 385s , And they are pricey, But the will last twice as long as a 11R and handles much better, they don’t follow uneven lines in the road. I’ve had a set of Continentals on my Western Star since July 2021 they have about 1/4 tread left,, I didn’t write down the mileage, but I can find it on fuel tickets just for comparison with the Michelins . A friend of mine has run both and he loves the aggressive style of the Michelins . I just like the way they make the Truck look .I don’t think North Carolina has any laws about weight per square inch , but there probably should be especially on a dump truck . Someone posted a picture of a Black COE F Model a few years ago with a set of Floats on it and it completely changed the look of a F Model! I’ll see if I can find it.
  10. Slow trucking day,,, made some progress on the Superliner
  11. Thank you, I found some hood springs , Universal works just fine as long as the length is close, I’m closer on finishing this project, Hopefully get the bull bar on in a couple days, Then the biggest thing left is to polish the fuel tanks and install, I found some NOS tank strap insulation .
  12. It would be great to keep it original if you were not going to work it hard! Can’t wait to see more pictures when you get it home.
  13. Congratulations, that’s a great find! That’s a unique truck. Send your vin number to the Mack Museum and they can tell you how many were made , and where it was sent to when it was delivered new . Good luck and I’m excited to see a 19 year old interested in old trucks. I’m sure there are many people on this site that will help you out with your questions,, just keep posting pictures, I have met a lot of great people on this site, exchanged parts , ideas, visits and mostly gave me a LOT of encouragement when times were tough! Thanks for sharing,, keep moving forward.
  14. This one has a few scars on the lower corners but not too bad overall,, it was used hauling coal in West Virginia when we got it so it has some pretty good pitting, I’ve been sanding with 120, 220,320 ,400, 600, I’m slowly getting there. Yes 2026 will be here quickly!
  15. I’m still plugging with the RW753, The summer weekend shows will wind down before long and hopefully I can get this one done, I’m down to a lot of aluminum polishing now,,, I remember Paul’s picture after the Bull Bar polish! Same here,, Dirty Job.
  16. A lot of us would have loved to have our families old truck in that condition,, especially being kept dry for 50 years! I would start by pressure washing everything, they’re is not that much to the interior that’s probably damaged, headliner and seats are easy to fix . Put some batteries in and see if the engine will turn over, ( can’t tell if it’s air start , it does have a big tank ) might pull it and see . If it does, drain the old fuel, check the tanks for rust. You might be surprised it might not be to bad of a project.
  17. 3rd stick is (next to the fuel pedal) a auxiliary transmission mounted in the frame about 3 feet from the main, with a short drive shaft between, it’s a 3 speed Brown-Lipe “Browny “ Auxiliary transmission, low ,direct, overdrive. A lot were put in the west coast log trucks back in the day. The other is a regular 10 speed Duplex. Now that I’m pretty much finished with the LJ except door lettering and maybe rear fenders I might start a tread on the LTH , I’ve posted a few pictures from time to time but haven’t really shared any of the history of it,,, it’s taken a wild ride though life, ( unlike her sister who came down the line behind her who never left home ) . And how it got the name 10Tucky.
  18. You both are correct! But the couple dozen antiques made it worth it and probably 1/2 them were Mack’s , and All the proceeds went to the Children’s Hospital. I had a steady stream of those young truckers scratching their heads at my 3 sticks so that was good entertainment.
  19. Yes lots of Chrome and fancy paint, but it’s open for any model and year , that just makes the old Mack’s more popular there, The 55 LTH was a hit because it was customized in 1973 , It was fun giving a history lesson.
  20. It was a good show, I’m glad there were some older trucks in the mix, The Blue R700 belongs to Rick Sowers , he’s in the grading business. I don’t think he uses it , maybe at one point though, it has a drop axle. A machine co bought it new in Marion NC . Yes he also has a Big Horn and the yellow 55 GMC with a Detroit . Here’s a few more pictures, there were about 300 trucks, lots of custom,Pete’s and KWs .
  21. It’s definitely difficult to find time to make all the shows, it’s been a busy summer and we have had something every weekend for a month, The Colfax show is the same weekend as the Cherokee show ( 10-25 ) I’ll probably go to Cherokee if weather permits it’s a lot closer for me. And yes I missed you at Spencer it was a good show also.
  22. Oh I forgot the most important picture,, remember where we were!
  23. Took the LTH to the Mayberry truck show in Mt Airy NC , Great Weather and it was for a good cause Brenner Children's Hospital. There were a lot of newer trucks and very nice custom trucks ,But the few old Mack’s were still a draw with the crowd. Dawson answered questions for hours about the LTH , surrounded by Peterbilts! Several B Models, 3 Superliners and a R700 with a factory V12 Detroit.
