  1. Steve that sounds like exactly what I have, I’m not going to change it because it’s still a overdrive, and the lowest gear is handy loading on a trailer when hauling it, I have another LJ parts truck that was a Diesel but was in the flood and the original was probably hauled off for scrap years ago, The number on it was the same as the line set record the Mack Museum sent me , 720 I think, but the rear auxiliary must be were the difference is . I have a photo of the LJ gas when it was in use here in North Carolina, I knew the original owner’s Grandson , he gave it to me for parts . Now we know what the Low Gear was for.
  2. Yes it has that odd ball pattern. 1st is completely on the opposite side then 2nd , and the original one was the same, but the original could be split between main gears like the 10 speed, this one has a WIDE auxiliary ratio , and is super slow in 1st under drive, the only way I can drive it is leaving the auxiliary in direct and shift like a straight 5 speed. I’ve got 5 trucks with Dupex,s and this one is the only one that’s geared that way.
  3. Just thought I would post this picture and find out if anyone has ever driven a truck with this model transmission, I drove this truck when I was about 19 years old, I rode with the fellow that owned it ( that I later inherited from) and drove it myself for a while, the transmission made a lot of noise and he said it was getting worse, so we pulled it out to replace the bearings, I didn’t recall it being a big ratio jump when you split the auxiliary, but it was the original and was a overdrive. In the meantime we had a junked F Model with a direct 10 speed, we put in it , shifted good, split well, so we just left it in ( slowed it down to about 60:but we were not using it much) When I restored it I had a 1950 LJ with a gas engine, it was a factory order dump truck, I checked the transmission and it was a overdrive so I installed it, the shift pattern was like the original 3rd & 4th beside each other, I used the shift pattern plate from the 50 gas , My question is was this a special model for a dump ? When you try to split the auxiliary it’s like jumping 3 gears, It is an overdrive and works well driving to shows , any thoughts?
  4. Yes I’ve ripped a couple power dividers and 2 transmissions trying to pull a piece of equipment up a 12-14% Grade , I’m sure there are worse places to truck, but 10% is about my limit, I’m too old to be laying under a truck at night working on it . Double steering boxes are worthless when the driveshaft hits the ground. Brocky knows how it is up in Highlands and Scaly Mt .
  5. I will have to do the same thing, it’s pitted pretty good, I can tell you have been polishing on it , that’s the only way to do it, get messy!
  6. I’m up for suggestions on polishing the Heard Guard and putting it back on when I get done or finding the big bumper it would have come with, we have had this truck almost 10 years, My Son has used it, That is the first time that guard has been removed. It’s a RW 753 Truck
  7. Yes , I was under the assumption that the Australian Road Train Trucks were some of the toughest trucks in the world, especially the loads that are hauled and the dirt roads, Crossing rivers,, a lot more difficult than rolling down I40 with 80.000 most of the time. I assume it does take the stress off the main steering gear and frame mount, twisting in a tight spot but there are a LOT of Heavy Haulers with only one box .
  8. Heinz , is there any way I can come up with an axle number like I need with the vin of my Superliner? Even though I would love to find a fit with hub pilot hubs and mine had stud pilot thank you
  9. Yes a lot of stretched out dumps came with dual boxes, we have a KW dump with twins on it , Lots of CL 700s do . It just takes the pressure off the tie rod , more if it were off road in soft ground , I would not put one back on the right side for what I’m going to use it for. And I spoke to an axle guy that can repair it but I’m not in a big hurry so I had rather just replace it with a good used one.
  10. I have been pressure washing in my spare time, I took the Herd guard off today, so I could really get some good measurements, I’ll post a picture of the axle number if anyone can tell me what rating it is. Also center bolt to center bolt is 34.5 with a 4 inch wide spring, from what I can find a RW & MH is the only axle that is the same, Unless some CLs had a 4 in spring, It has converted hub pilot hubs on it now that I could use if I can find a axle with the same rating ( it came new with twin steering boxes and the right one was removed by the previous owner. ) it’s a pretty decent old Superliner, 3406B , 18 speed Eaton, Newer Mack air ride rears 3.90 ratio. I’m planning on restoring it when I get the shop repaired and using it , but the steering axle the first project.
  11. Yes I’ve watched that video before, sweet ride !
  12. Yes I saw those, thank you. I’ll probably go with something like that, I would rather just put flaps on the rear but my driveway is 1/2 mile gravel, when I get to the state rd there is rocks all in the tread and flying around.
  13. I remember the 1160 was a “ Eye-burner “ The company I worked for in the early 80s had 4 in C cab Fords, I would raise the shop door in the winter and get enough speed to cut them off and coast in the shop or they would smoke the place up and burn your eyes, I would jump out and close the door to keep you heat in .
  14. Just saw this posted on Facebook, looks to be in a L Ford frame. 1160 Cat , Ford Blue
  15. Our local Advance Auto Parts store had a charity car show today, We took the LJ out for a bit ,, It blends in perfectly with the new corvettes,,, NOT.
  16. Yes, I’m with you, I may end up putting mud flaps on it for now.
  17. I’m going to give it a pressure washing and get some measurements, I think I know where a CL 700 dump truck is , the frames look the same but I have never measured spring centers .
  18. Yeah I figured there will be a lot of measuring going on, I was hoping someone had already been down this road.
  19. I have a 1988 RW700 Superliner, the front axle is worn out, unfortunately it will take more than a set of kingpins to repair it, I also would love to find a axle with hub pilot hubs. Any suggestions on a later axle? CL 700 maybe? I haven’t done any research yet.
  20. I have a set of 1/2 fenders I may modify and hang flaps on the rear, I would love to drive it local shows, ( like yesterday) . I can always remove them if I need to, Thank you again for the help yesterday
  21. Buy the way,, I have a 1988 Superliner 2 , 700 , it originally had 2 steering boxes and the right side leaked so the original owner removed it, it’s did fine for us for the last 10 years, problem now is the front axle is worn out, ( not the king pins, the actual axle ends, ) would love to find a replacement axle with hub pilot hubs,, I would appreciate any advice,, First thought of mine was a CL 700 because they are newer , but I haven’t seen one to measure.
  22. Thanks Bob , I’ll try to find a picture of the old ones .
  23. Thank you Brocky , That’s a Honor to see Gary with the LJ ! I’ll agree on the pictures ; luckily I have a printer that I printed a lot of these off and put them in a album, But there are 100s that will be deleted that will be on my phone when I’m gone. I see a lot of single axles with the fenders wrapped around the rear tires, I’m not sure what that would look like, I’ll keep messing with it.
