Thanks, that's were I'm at so I guess I'm good to go, I just thought it a bit low because of every other post I seen on other Mack engines it was always higher, but as I stated in my OP I hadn't seen anything concerning my engine. Not much talk here about the EM6...I guess it's a little outdated now, sort of like talking about hand grenades when atomic bombs are the norm. But it does what I need it to and the payment book is long gone
  3. Lots of talk on here about boost but.....I haven't seen any talk at all about the EM6 250 which is what I have in my 86 RD685S, All of the talk I see about boost is always well above what I see with my truck, my question is: What boost should I expect to see from my engine?

  7. Nice little rig......and good on him for hanging tough and staying in the work force, He probably realizes half of America is counting on him doing so.
  8. Let me say this, They didn't ALL blow and if they held together they did a fine job! But many more in my area that were cranked blew than didn't, I didn't have the guts to crank mine. I sold it in 93 and went driving OTR in a 400 cat that ran good but I was only in it for a short time and the company I was with put me in a new 3406 425 that was in a1994 star and that was as gutless as my old 400, but I did put 750,000 on that truck in 4 years with just one rebuild around 450,000 or there abouts.

Yeah, there were a lot of guys around my neck of the woods that had these 3406B cats when I was running mine, and most that cranked em up blew them up....I was tempted a time or two but I was trting to keep it together long enouh to pay for it......didn't happen, it had liner seal problems at 270,000 and I ended up overhauling it at that time, I run it three more years after that though (7 total) never any nuts but it got the job done. I don't by any means want to discourage the guy with this rebuild but I did want to convey my experience with my cat. I inframed it in 1989 at Cat for $5,500.00 if I recall Now they tell me it's $15,000 to do it

Mine wouldn't pull a 'sick lady of the night of a slop jar ' when I brought it home, it took some tweaking to get any life out of it but was never a powerhouse, I guess the problems they had with the 380's blowing up soured them on getting any power out of the 3406 design but couldn't do anything to improve upon it so they just squeezed the life out of it instead....as we see now though, it was not the best business model they could have used. Oh, and sorry for the hijack, now back to the regularly scheduled program.
  11. Would it be possible/helpful to install lateral torque rods?....... just thinking out loud.
  12. I owned a 3406B, bought it new in 1985 in a Westernstar, it was a real DOG and never did live up to it's reputation... I wouldn't misplace that Mack 350 if I where the owner, my guess is he'll be using it if he tries to get full power out of that Cat.

My thoughts exactly, at the very least there is zero chance of it rotting out and needing replacement in one mans liftime, unlike the OEM with the hollow stand and holes to let stuff in but none to let it back out. As much as I like Macks design on the camelback they missed the mark on the trunnion stand. The plate steel is 1in thick and the bolt holes need resized to except the 1in bolts, also the dowels between the new stand and frame offer far less place for corrosives to build up and rot the frame in that area also
  16. The Mack garage that recommened/installed it said they've put many of them in dump and refuse hauling trucks and zero problems so far, it really is a beefy setup so time will tell.
  17. Let me start by saying this may be already have been discussed on here...but I'm too lazy to search it out. I recently discovered my OEM trunnion stand was rotted and cracked (1986 RD685S), and with the truck being an Dump truck I wasn't looking forward to replacing it with a new OEM stand. I did a little digging and found an aftermarket stand that is installed in sections allowing to just burn the old one out and nothing has to be removed from the truck other than the old stand to do it. The stand was $2600.00 and the labor was about the same so over all I was very happy to have found this product/method of curing this enevitable problem with these older Macks.   19. That fact was discussed during the last piston replacement, I believe it was determined at that time to be spraying in the right way, The engine is doing fine this year....so far. Its been cool and rainy here most of the spring/summer to date so it really hasn't been put to the test yet.
  20. Wow, I've been super busy and not on the computer much......sorry I haven't responded to the latest post before this, to be honest I thought this thread died a while ago. I have been using the truck daily but haven't taken the time to check much out, I'll be looking at the temps in various ways and report what I find, as far as the water galley being plugged.....well, if that's the problem I'll most likley find that when the next piston needs to go in. Thanks to all for keeping this going and for all the good advise.

  22. I believe you've hit the proverbial nail on the head. I choose to run my 1986 RD with a 250 for many reasons....this being a big one. Suck, puff, Bang, Blow. Now those where the good ole days.

I know the engine wont be hot at idle, but if I pull the truck in a grade with a load and then stop and check I believe the hot hole would be some hotter in the time it takes to pull over, tip the hood and do a quick check......maybe not but I don't think the temps would equalize that quick. The pump was rebuilt and flow tested and the nozzles were checked at that time. I have since changed the nozzle in the 6 hole thinking that was at least a possibility of having a bad spray pattern...time will tell I suppose.
