very interesting the steel ball was used out here with varying degrees of success they used to D7's and another with a tree pusher to help on bigger trees but with scrub pulling they only used anchor chains and no ball Heres a picture of the crawlers and ball used near were I grew up as kid

that little fella has got something big to aim for there what a great old photo I dont think they used a steel ball that dozer blade on the front is a funnel dozer and it has a cutter bar (Root Plow) is the proper name I think on the back and it all was done in one operation Paul

I wouldn't knock a Scania. They are a pretty tuff jigger and do run rings around a lot of other better known brands and as Kevin says, Volvo ain't ever gonna be a Scania although he is much better with words than me Paul

well by the sounds of it it could have been a lot worse

the Oshkosh never sold very well out here they aimed them at the high speed interstate market to begin with then logging and then just about anything else they could think of To take full advantage of the weight laws at the time the front axle needed to be set right forward which Oshkosh never did so they could not carry gross weights and then the cab was to long for the length laws of the time Wrong truck for the wrong market I think Paul

yes the 3070 was a big time truck on a small time budget and got a lot of transport companies we have today up and running basic and plenty of power for its day Great read Kevin Paul

Wish I had of had a camera when they building Loy yang Power stations A & B Latrobe Valley Victoria Transfield who where the main contractors used B model Macks to haul all the big steel work around like in the photos above and this was in the late 80's early 90's a lot of the loads would have been a couple of hundred ton Last time I saw those Transfield B models was on the city link project in Melbourne No phones in cameras back then Paul

They had some balls in the Aussie E9's and yeah I reckon they have a special sound all of their own get west a bit and you can hear a E9 rumble for half a hour on a still night before you see the lights OH YEAH they go hard and sound good Paul

Well Im gunna have to put that one in the Chrissy list for under the tree IH Australia was in huge amount of dept due to IH US making IH Australia buy a lot of machinery trucks tractors and earth moving gear and and all this was done on IH credit After IH US collapse IH Australia was left in venerable position but managed to trade out of dept in a few years amazing enough but I think the final nail in the coffin was once the supply of US sourced engines tractors etc were no longer going to be available it would no longer be viable to for IH Australia to operate IH AB to D line shared the same basic cab as Dodge AT4 and D5N series IH Geelong plant cast Chrysler engine blocks a lot of Aussie V8 Hemis have IH cast into the side dunno about the 6 cylinder Those smaller ACCO's only had the 345 V8 petrol for a long time so probably only go 10 MPG at the best compare that to the little Jap diesel trucks of the time 20 MPG or better and they ran for a lot longer to, even the Jap petrol ran for ever and used a lot less fuel The little Jap trucks caught the Australian truck market by surprise thats for sure Paul

Looking good to me but those inside nuts look to be on the wrong side of the rim or maybe its just my eyes are getting old dunno I would have thought there should be a lot more cone hanging out side the rim it looks like its on the side of the rime to me Paul

it's amazing how fiddly these little jobs can be and all of sudden a whole day is gone and well there just isnt much to look at for a days work LOL sounds like your still moving along ok they Paul
