Mrs mack Paul ,you mentioned the Hand built Hippo,Our freightliner was originally built by consolidated freightways mechanics in their Portland Oregon shop.they needed a short lightweight tractor that could pull longer trailers and haul more weight,hence the aluminum cab.this being the result of heavily enforced weight and length laws.The infamous DOT officers! I suspect they only wanted to get their cattle and freight hauled in Australia.

the days of custom made trucks are just about over I feel at least from the manufacturers
Once you came to eastern half of Australia the wait and length laws were pretty strict there was one truck hand made with twin 6 71 GM's side by side for the Pilbra WA by the time it was made they were never allowed to use it the laws were been enforced then
