Barry, this is great! I really like Ray's blog-if I could type with more than one finger (I actually have many more) I could tell many more stories.Somebody will come up with something and it just triggers memories I'd long forgotten, but you never know, somebody out there might find it interesting.

I unloaded a load of pipe right on top of a mountain ( well actually on the side of a mountain-everything in Cumberland,Md. is either on top of,the side of,or at the bottom of a mountain ) Monday morning, then went to Boardman,Oh. and picked up a magnet, then went to Macedonia and got a load of coils going to Roanoke. After I got the coils off I went to Petersburg and delivered the magnet and picked up another one going back to Boardman to be refurbished-they make new electro magnets there and also refurbish old ones. It's not very big, about 4' long and maybe 2' wide, and it was already pretty late when I got it loaded,so I brought it back to the shop in Concord,Va. in hopes of getting a load of Kyanite or something to go with it. They had a load going to Buffalo at the yard that was just 2 beams, about 8,000 lbs. so maybe that will work out-that would make a good paying load too,and light. The magnet is small, but it weighs about 8,000 lbs,so i'd be a little over with a load of kyanite. It's just a shame to take that little magnet by itself with all that trailer floor left over.

I'm off until tomorrow,so today I had the traditional New Years meal of blackeyed peas and greens. They were mustard greens, but mustard, turnip, kale, they all taste about the same to me-I like'em all. Creeces are the best, but hard to come by. They say the greens are supposed to bring you money in the new year and the blackeyed peas bring you luck. You're supposed to have hog jowl too,but I skipped on that part. I don't know what the hog jowl is supposed to represent anyway, but money and good luck covers most things I guess. I'm also gonna try to quit smoking. I had quit for 10 years or more but started back just before my wife passed away. One of the more foolish things I've done-it's A hard habit to break.

Just got back from Toga,Va.where they had the 5th. annual benefit, for some needy person or persons that they pick from the community.Usually it's someone who's ill or has cancer, and all the money donated and raised from the car show, pig roast, horse shoe tournament, silent auction, games, bands, and so on goes to the people the benefit is held for. It's really a great thing for people to do this. They had one for my wife, who died of cancer in June,2005.They picked two local people this year, and one just recently passed away and the other man has colon cancer. The family of the one who recently passed will still get half of the money, which is also a good thing.I put the mixer in the car show too,as I do every year, because this is one thing I wouldn't want to miss, and haven't so far.

I've been out seeing how much money I could spend today,or so it seems anyway.I went to the drug store and got a prescription filled, stopped by the cell phone battery store to get a new battery, then had to go to Altavista to the shoe shop to get my boots I was having resoled.Made the mistake of criticising ( that just doesn't look right-maybe I can't spell criticizing either ) Jobyna's driving along the way,and how she pays attention to everything except what she's supposed to be doing, which is driving. Pretty quiet trip to Altavista. When we got to the shoe shop I saw her looking at a pair of Justin boots when I was about to pay for my repair job,and ended up buying them for her. They were $135 and the pair right beside them was $100,but she didn't like them, even though they looked pretty much the same to me.I get most of my shoes from Sportsman's Guide or Wal-Mart way cheaper, but sometimes ya just gotta do what ya gotta do.Anyway, all is well again.Lesson learned. ...and it finally rained, for the first time since the last time.Good rain too, just what we needed-over 4 inches total, but spread over 3 days.

Crap!..This week ain't going too good so far- I was supposed to deliver that load of beams in Birmingham tomorrow, but I went to the doctor today and he told me to come back tomorrow (again!) so he could look at it and change the bandage (again!). So, I finally had to give the load up. The doctor couldn't believe the amount of stuff he got out of it today-it had filled up again. He said it had to be a golfball sized amount of nasty stuff that was still in there. He said maybe tomorrow I would be good to go with just a band-aid. Same thing he said yesterday. But he said it was one of the largest cysts he'd ever seen, so I feel very special. Going broker every day, but special.

Went to Altavista just now,and out here where 699 runs into 29 some people were having a yard sale in the restaurant parking lot straight across 29. So of course Jo wanted to stop and look around-I said "I don't want none of that crap", so we stopped to look around. Saw what could well have been a heckuva deal- a cobra 148gtl cb radio, chrome plated external speaker, and a 300 watt linear-all for $60! The radio or linear either one is worth way more than that-way,way more.I was tempted to buy it myself, but I just bought a new Connex 3300hp and I have a 100 watt modulator I don't even use. The guy said everything worked, and that he had it on his boat, but I had no way to test it of course. I feel like it probably was good, because his wife (I assume she was his wife) said it about killed him to bring it. If anybody else happens to want it let me know ASAP,I'll run back over and see if it's still there, and send it for $60 plus whatever it costs to ship it. Maybe the guy didn't realize what he had.
Even went to Food Lion and got a replacement steak for the one I dumped on the ground yesterday.

Got home last night, but now i've got to leave again. After I left Roxana Monday I picked up in Calvert City, Ky. going to Neville Island, Pa. then I went to Brookfield, Oh. and loaded for Roanoke. Unloaded yesterday and reloaded treated lumber at the shop. It's a two stop load going to Vermillion and someplace else in Ohio. Both are near Cleveland. I was running short on hours yesterday, so i'll be leaving today...shortly.
This is the entrance to the old tunnel on the West Virginia turnpike.

I went to Raleigh with a load of steel on a side kit trailer this morning, got lost, ( kind of par for the course for me ) then came back to the shop and tied down a load of pipe going to Cumberland,Md. for Monday delivery. The guys in the shop had discovered that an empty Pepsi bottle explodes much louder than the windshield washer jugs.I guess they just ran out of the jugs and had to find something else. The Pepsi bottles take much more pressure to explode-then they'll blow off of the fitting and go flying across the shop,or the yard. They fired 2 of them at me out of a piece of exhaust stack when I was strapping my load down-Kevin had it on his shoulder like a grenade launcher while Tom applied the air, but I was out of range and the wind was throwing their aim off anyway. But,as they say,all good things come to an end. Todd (boss man) sent word down from the office that if he heard any more noise he was going to "fire the whole bunch".Tom put his impact wrench down and said "well I can't change this tire then, the impact wrench makes too much noise". I just left and came home.

I went to Midland City, Alabama Sunday...sorta-kinda. I made it all the way to Cowpens, S.C. before I took a nap. The after Christmas traffic was bumper to bumper so I stopped about 5:30 at Cowpens and got a bite to eat and laid down until about midnight. Then I got a super-size Red Bull and hammered down. Came all the way back to Atlanta and picked up a load going to Scherr, West Virginia Monday- a whopping 6,000 lbs. I unloaded at Scherr Tuesday morning-good little ride from Midland City. Scherr is near Mount Storm, at the junction of rt. 42 and 93. It's right at the bottom of the big mountain with all the windmills at the top. The Mount Storm power plant is at the top of the mountain too. That would be the 5 or 6 mile 10% grade mountain. Tons of fun in winter.
These pictures are of where I unloaded in Midland City-you can see this same spot on street view on Google Earth,on rt. 134 just west of Midland City.
And the view from the top of the mountain on rt. 55 before you get to Moorefield-you can see the smoke from the Mt. Storm power plant way off in the distance, and just barely the windmills.

Gee...where to begin? Haven't posted a blog since Dec. 22nd. Lot's been going on since then, good and bad and in between, but i've forgotten most of it.
The bad news is that my nephew Bo Scruggs was one of the victims of the sorry bastard who shot and killed 8 people in Appomattox recently.
8 good people, for no apparent reason, or reasons known only to him. Then Bo's dad Ronnie had a heart attack and is now recovering at home from 5-way heart bypass surgery, so he'll be out of work for a while. Fortunately the community has rallied behind them and the other victims families with benefits for them like stews, dances, and the skating rink in Appomattox- where Bo was a regular- donated money also. The Pamplin volunteer fire department made 40 gallons of chicken stew and 40 gallons of beef stew- it was all sold in 15 minutes, along with all the cakes, pies, and desserts people donated to sell.
Been running pretty good lately. Went to Mobile, Al. one week. Reloaded in Shreveport for Lynchburg and it was snowing. In Shreveport. Louisiana. Then the following week I went to Mobile and back twice. Then last week I went to Eagle Pass Texas. That's about a desolate ass place, right on the Mexican border. Nothing but brush and cactus for about 50 miles or so before you get there, for as far as you can see. Had to come all the way back to Jackson, Tn. to get a load though...going to New #@*+ing Jersey.
Had to go to Wilmington, De. Monday to unload a load I picked up in Blytheville, Ar. last week. I left here Sunday and while I was driving up rt. 29 I noticed the alternator wasn't charging. Figured it was probably the belt, and I had a spare, so I pulled into the truckstop at Opal to put it on...but it wasn't the belt. So I called Jeff and he told me to call road service, so I did, and left there 6 hours later with a new alternator.
I left Wilmington when I got unloaded Monday morning, headed to Petersburg to load the Eagle Pass load. Went by Peterbilt in Richmond to get the engine brake fixed-it only worked 2/3's- and I had an air bag leaking on the cab. Left there with 2 new air bags and a fully operational engine brake...6 hours later.
    12 hours downtime...don't tell Rob.

I cooked some ribs yesterday, and I know this isn't the recipe corner, but they were so good I thought I'd share. I saw A recipe in A magazine once, two rappers had A rib cooking contest, and I kind of modified the winning recipe.First I slice the ribs into serving size pieces, then boil the ribs in beer with A little garlic, black pepper, and some of my homemade barbecue sauce, which is mostly just vinegar, red pepper, and liquid smoke. Then after they've simmered 'til they're done I put them on the charcoal grill and brown them on both sides, and they're good to go.They always come out tender and delicious. And that's the recipe of the week...tune in next week for tomater sammiches.

I take A lot of truck pictures on the road, and truck show pictures when I can get to A show. For years I used an old Kodak 35mm,and it took good pictures. Then I bought A Nikon 35mm from A guy near Monroeville,Oh. for $40 and it took good pictures too,but everybody said "you need to go digital, you're way behind the times". So I did,and I'm glad because it's so easy to put the pictures right on the computer, crop them,e-mail them,or whatever you want to do. I bought A Kodak digital camera from Wal-Mart for $199.99,the best I could afford. Then the price went down to $179,then $159,and the last time I was in Wal-Mart it was $149. When I had to replace my old PC I bought one for $698,the best I could afford because I figured it would be the last one I'll get.Today I saw the same PC on sale at Staples for $349.

I've got a full report of my weekly adventures, but don't have pictures to prove any of it, so i'll save that for later. Even took photographic evidence of myself being broke down again, but it was just a flat tire...right front steer tire as a matter of fact.
Went to the Appomattox Railroad Festival Parade today, drove the mixer in it.( new video on youtube,by the way ) . What a great day for a parade! Beautiful weather, great turnout, more beautiul women than you could-well...you know. Didn't get any pictures of any of them because Jo-well...you know. Did get a few pictures though.
And how about college football? I always thought the greatest college football game ever played was Oklahoma/Nebraska in 1971 or '72, won by Nebraska 35-31. I've been a Sooner fan ever since. But the Oklahoma/Texas game today was also a great one, as was North Carolina/Notre Dame. Now,even though there's not a lot of good news around anywhere at the moment, if Kyle Busch finishes out of the top twenty again...that'll be good.
    And, some pictures from today...
a nice looking restored Duster 340 ( oops-forgot to resize)

A big dog with "Spot" the book bus...is that dog going to pee on that tire?!!
Otherdog (the beagle, not me) would never do that!

The Appomattox Railroad Festival and Parade is this weekend.Last year Tom at the shop put the big "Mack" sign on the water tank on the mixer the morning of the parade. I had to burn the frost off of it with a hair dryer first, and we tilted a space heater up inside the shop to try to warm it up so the decal would stick. When I stopped by the shop to get fuel before I went to Seneca Tuesday it was 94 degrees. Still no rain ....speaking of Tom at the shop ( I'm Tom too ),he's discovered a new form of entertainment (?)-he took the top off a windshield washer fluid jug, drilled a hole in it and screwed an air line chuck into it.Then he connects an air line to it that has a shut-off on the wall, sets the empty jug by the tool box or under a trailer and waits for an unsuspecting victim to walk by,then he turns the air on and the jug explodes like a cannon firing. I think he's gotten about everybody-i'll be glad when he runs out of empty jugs.I think when I fill my washer tank if the jug is empty i'll cut a hole in it with my pocket knife.

Don't worry guys-I know everybody was loading their jumper cables to come over and get me started this morning, but it fired right up.Now I gotta go to Lynchburg and unload then to the shop for fuel and some new batteries, then to Dillwyn to load Kyanite going to Fremont,Oh. So I'm off like A herd of turtles as Bill would say.

Got the stew on and bubbling away.Had to go to Avon,Oh. Thursday, but I got unloaded and reloaded pretty quick, unloaded in Roanoke last night, and came home and cut up meat, potatoes, and onions until after 1am.Got that cooking now-that's the hardest part, the raw ingredients. After they're done it's just a matter of opening cans and dumping them in.Gotta go now, don't wanna let the pot boil dry or burn anything,or i'll have to go buy 300 cans of Dinty Moore before anybody gets here.

Got the pipe unloaded in Cranberry Township without too much problem. Biggest problem was that somewhere between Cranberry and Pittsburgh my trailer dump valve quit working. Pittsburgh is one of the least truck-friendly places I know of anyway and I ran over every curb in town...well,most of 'em it seemed like. That can be very hard on tires. I checked the fuses and the wires going to the dump valve where they have a tendency to break off and didn't find any obvious problem,so i'll have them check it at the shop today. They're almost like real mechanics, and I ain't much of a truck driver so I need my dump valve. Gotta run up to Handy in Lynchburg now and unload the load I dropped there last night.

Finally! Got a load going to Webb,Al,near Dothan. Somebody brought the load to the shop, and it's already loaded on my trailer. All i've got to do is chain it down and go. Maybe i'll be able to afford gas to get to Winchester next weekend after all,but it's too early to tell.

Once again i've made the trip to Cumberland and back. Got a picture before the parade started ,( THE DECORATIONS LOOKED PRETTY SHABBY THIS YEAR! ) the Dabney brothers 9 second '66 Chevelle, some good friends of mine for years, and one of the bulldog headed into the sunset-going home!

Well,I've got one load "in the hole" since I deadheaded home.My week wasn't near as good as I expected-should have left that load in Plymouth,it really wasn't worth fooling with, and I invested those two 3 liter Mountain Dews in it. As slow as it's been anything's better than nothing I guess, but it's a tremendous letdown to run as hard as I did and not even bring home $500....geez! About the only thing that would cheer me up is if Jim MacMahon showed up here with a big ol' check in his hand.

I went to Roxana, reloaded in Calvert City, Ky. for Ambridge, Pa. then loaded in Pittsburgh for Lynchburg. Nothing unusual or exciting, so I took some pictures of it...
well, this might be unusual-looks like a broken power pole with the transformer dangling from it.
Anyone know what this is? I see lots of them along the road, especially in Pa. This is in W.V. They're purple and triangular-i'm thinking some kind of insect trap.
    Self explanitory- Ansted, W.V.
The old Smith's Transfer terminal on rt. 60 near Charleston, W.V.
I think the plan here is to connect these things so you can drive across it.
some of the piling we've hauled to Roxana.
    A red Mack.
    A white Mack.
    A blue Mack.
And a colorful Peterbilt, loading storm debris in western Ky.

It's raining,it's raining! You might not be as excited as I am,but it's the first rain we've had around here in months! I haven't cut the grass since June, and none of the turnips I sowed came up because it's been so dry. It's just a light rain, but it has been coming down over an hour now. Every little bit helps I guess!

Well,I just got home again, and I should've been here early this morning.Picked up a load of steel in Twinsburg,Oh. yesterday going to Buena Vista,Va,and was coming down the W.V.Turnpike last night minding my own business when my air dryer failed.Called road service, but he couldn't bypass it,all the parts stores were closed,so the guy told me he'd get one in the morning and be back to put it on .I was just south of the first tollbooth at the Sharon-Cabin Creek exit and had to be in Buena Vista by 3pm to get unloaded.By the time the service man got there and took the old dryer off, changed out the fittings, and got the new one on it was about 11:30am,but I made it in time.I'm off Sunday-going to the dentist Monday.
