Guess I should catch up a little. I went to Chesapeake Monday and came back up to Petersburg and loaded another load for Roxana,Il. Delivered there Tuesday evening and loaded in Pittsboro, In. Wednesday morning for Petersburg, Va. Hit snow in Charleston, W.V. coming back, but the turnpike was pretty clear. When I got off on 64 east at Beckley it was a different story. Completely covered. I waited on top of Sandstone mountain for a couple of hours, hoping the snow would stop...and a plow truck would come by. I think there was one truck working the mountain, and it's 5 miles down it, 7%. I got caught in the snow a couple of times there last winter, and why they don't try to keep it clear I do not know.
Sandstone is as long, and a lot steeper, than any of the mountain passes I crossed going to Puyallup. I know they might measure snowfall out there in feet instead of inches, but when Sandstone is completely covered, not even 2 tracks clear, it can be pretty intense going down it. I finally eased on down about 15-20 mph. and made it OK.
I unloaded in Petersburg Thursday, then reloaded for Roxana again with a 60' load this time. It delivers Tuesday.

Just a few pictures I took on the last Florida trip-load of sheets I took down, red & black Mack dump parked in front of N.B. Handy in Boca Raton, N.B.Handy trailer, a nocluejoe unloader machine with rubber tracks, the load of lumber I brought back, and an old GMC dump truck trying to hide a b-model Mack on rt.301 in South Caolina.

Got some film developed the other day, some pictures so old they were taken this summer. My scanner still won't work so I took a picture of the 35mm pictures I wanted to post with the digital camera. Tried it all at once this time instead of individually, so you'll probably have to biggerize it to see anything. This is an experimental process, thought i'd try it here instead of the test forum...we'll see.
not too bad- the pictures are, top row L to R- the Areva trailer I bobtailed to Florida to pick up, unloading Kyanite in Negley,Oh, loaded with coils in Masury,Oh.
middle row- log truck in Rustburg,Va, an old GMC I spotted in Concord,Va. this summer, Navaho truck in Food Lion parking lot in Altavista,Va. a few weeks ago.
bottom- what it would look like if you were following a coal bucket on rt. 20 in West Virginia.

Went to Altavista just now,and out here where 699 runs into 29 some people were having a yard sale in the restaurant parking lot straight across 29. So of course Jo wanted to stop and look around-I said "I don't want none of that crap", so we stopped to look around. Saw what could well have been a heckuva deal- a cobra 148gtl cb radio, chrome plated external speaker, and a 300 watt linear-all for $60! The radio or linear either one is worth way more than that-way,way more.I was tempted to buy it myself, but I just bought a new Connex 3300hp and I have a 100 watt modulator I don't even use. The guy said everything worked, and that he had it on his boat, but I had no way to test it of course. I feel like it probably was good, because his wife (I assume she was his wife) said it about killed him to bring it. If anybody else happens to want it let me know ASAP,I'll run back over and see if it's still there, and send it for $60 plus whatever it costs to ship it. Maybe the guy didn't realize what he had.
Even went to Food Lion and got a replacement steak for the one I dumped on the ground yesterday.

Well,I just got home again, and I should've been here early this morning.Picked up a load of steel in Twinsburg,Oh. yesterday going to Buena Vista,Va,and was coming down the W.V.Turnpike last night minding my own business when my air dryer failed.Called road service, but he couldn't bypass it,all the parts stores were closed,so the guy told me he'd get one in the morning and be back to put it on .I was just south of the first tollbooth at the Sharon-Cabin Creek exit and had to be in Buena Vista by 3pm to get unloaded.By the time the service man got there and took the old dryer off, changed out the fittings, and got the new one on it was about 11:30am,but I made it in time.I'm off Sunday-going to the dentist Monday.

Just got back from Toga,Va.where they had the 5th. annual benefit, for some needy person or persons that they pick from the community.Usually it's someone who's ill or has cancer, and all the money donated and raised from the car show, pig roast, horse shoe tournament, silent auction, games, bands, and so on goes to the people the benefit is held for. It's really a great thing for people to do this. They had one for my wife, who died of cancer in June,2005.They picked two local people this year, and one just recently passed away and the other man has colon cancer. The family of the one who recently passed will still get half of the money, which is also a good thing.I put the mixer in the car show too,as I do every year, because this is one thing I wouldn't want to miss, and haven't so far.

I was supposed to deliver that load of beams in Birmingham today, but I went to the doctor yesterday and he bladed that cyst and stuck some kind of drain in it, then told me to come back today so he could look at it and change the bandage. So, I tried to get the delivery put off 'til today so I wouldn't have to give the load up, but they said to bring it Thursday. Worked out real well because the doctor told me to come back again tomorrow. I think he's gonna pull the drain thing out and I should be good to go with just a band-aid. It's in a bad spot because I can't reach it or see it. Or maybe that's a good thing!

Saw in the paper this morning that Mrs. Moore passed away Sunday. She was the wife of H.H.Moore,mother of F.L.Moore,and Jeff and Todd's grandmother.I work for them now at F.L.Moore and sons, but I drove for H.H.for more than 25 years, started there in1979. H.H. and Evelyn started H.H.Moore trucking co. in 1946.I'll be here until tomorrow now,so I can go to the funeral.

My load to Richmond was a Bobcat and attachments-a set of forks,an auger and trencher, like on a ditch witch-some straw,a machine that looked like an overgrown tiller, and 6 big holly trees.Yeah,it was a landscaping job.Right in a residential area with narrow streets, and a tri-axle lowboy.Had to detatch and unload everything right in the street.Fortunately there wasn't a lot of traffic moving in the area-got there about 10am.Caught hell getting turned around and out of there though. But it was a good load-it was exactly 100 miles from the shop to the jobsite, and it paid me $150.I left the shop at 8am and got back at 1:30. Then I went back to the shop and picked up my regular trailer and took a load of pipe to Weaverville,N.C.-just north of Ashville. This evening I went by Staley,N.C. on the way in and picked up a load of structural steel for Monday morning delivery in Wilmington,so for the sad news I just don't see how I can make it to the Winchester show. It's about 200 miles, and I hate-just hate-to miss it,but by the time I drove all the way up there, then drove back, then gotta leave Sunday-well,I might be biting off more than I could chew.I ain't as young as I used to be.Besides, things have been kinda slow lately and I really couldn't afford to go...but if I didn't have to go out Sunday,I would go anyway...dang it,this is the first time I've ever missed Winchester.About the only thing that would cheer me up is if Johnny Carson's former sidekick Fred MacMurry showed up here with a check from publishers clearinghouse.

After my long, grueling, all uphill 20 mile hike home-I meant to say 2 mile flat as a board walk, hit the wrong key-I went to Carter Cat the next morning and picked the truck up.Ran great. Went on to Petersburg and loaded a load of steel going to Nazareth,Pa. After I unloaded Wednesday morning I had to go to Sparrows Point to load coils back to Lynchburg.I was outside tarping when I heard the phone ringing-it was Jeff. He just wanted to let me know they had a load of kyanite going to Fremont,Oh. and he was going to save it for me. Perhaps to make up for going to Nazareth. Nazareth is a good load, but since I had to go to Baltimore, and everybody knows how I hate running northeast, and I do like going to Fremont...except I listen to WLW in Cincinnati on XM a lot and I already knew they were calling for the biggest snowfall this winter, starting Friday morning. And all day Friday...and Friday night...and Saturday. They said they were expecting a foot or more, and I figured it might be worse up around Fremont, which is a little bit east of Toledo. So when I got to the shop Thursday morning I asked my usual question-"is this for Friday delivery,or Monday delivery?" The usual answer is "it's for whenever you get there delivery",but Todd said "we never put off 'til Monday what we can do on Friday". Yeah,right...but since they had already held the load for me for a day we thought they might be getting low in material,so I was off like a herd of turtles (Old Bill).
When I unloaded and left there about 8:30 yesterday morning it wasn't snowing and I had to go all the way to Pittsburgh to reload,so I thought I might get lucky and miss it altogether-the Pittsburgh weather channel called for snow and rain with a high of 38 degrees. It was 26 in Fremont. I took 20 east to Monroeville, got some fuel, then to Norwalk and back down 250 to 224,turned to the east and still no sn-what's that up ahead? Oh...snow. And more snow. Couple of miles and the road was covered. It was covered all the way to Lodi, where I got on the interstate. Which was covered except for two tracks in the right lane. I was going to go down 14 to 51 into Pa. then take 60 down to Pittsburgh but I stayed on I-76 to Youngstown and went rt. 11 to 14,thinking the big road would be better. 14 probably wasn't much worse because all this way I only saw 2 salt trucks and one of them was parked on a ramp on 76. The trailer was completely covered in snow and ice,I couldn't even see the marker lights, but traffic was proceding fairly well, just slowly. The only accidents I saw were on the westbound side. A little bit after I crossed into Pa. there was some rain in the snow and about halfway down rt. 60 the snow just quit like you turned a switch off and the road was just wet the rest of the way-all rain and 38 degrees when I got to Galv-tech,most of the snow gone off the truck and trailer and what wasn't melted and fell off in the floor when I was loading.I chained and tarped inside, but there were no more trucks there anyway. Left there around 3 o'clock and got to Lynchburg about 11 last night, and the temperature never got below freezing again all the way home.
Now i'm glad I went of course because I'll have Sunday off. You shouldn't have to work on Sunday anyway, but it's a truckdriver's life to have to do it I guess. Always was one of the worst parts of the job. Especially in summer when you're going up the road on Sunday afternoon and at every house you pass everybody's in the back yard cooking on the grill and drinking a cold beer and listening to the race and enjoying their weekend. And you're going to Cleveland or somewhere....

I unloaded a load of pipe right on top of a mountain ( well actually on the side of a mountain-everything in Cumberland,Md. is either on top of,the side of,or at the bottom of a mountain ) Monday morning, then went to Boardman,Oh. and picked up a magnet, then went to Macedonia and got a load of coils going to Roanoke. After I got the coils off I went to Petersburg and delivered the magnet and picked up another one going back to Boardman to be refurbished-they make new electro magnets there and also refurbish old ones. It's not very big, about 4' long and maybe 2' wide, and it was already pretty late when I got it loaded,so I brought it back to the shop in Concord,Va. in hopes of getting a load of Kyanite or something to go with it. They had a load going to Buffalo at the yard that was just 2 beams, about 8,000 lbs. so maybe that will work out-that would make a good paying load too,and light. The magnet is small, but it weighs about 8,000 lbs,so i'd be a little over with a load of kyanite. It's just a shame to take that little magnet by itself with all that trailer floor left over.

Got home last night, but now i've got to leave again. After I left Roxana Monday I picked up in Calvert City, Ky. going to Neville Island, Pa. then I went to Brookfield, Oh. and loaded for Roanoke. Unloaded yesterday and reloaded treated lumber at the shop. It's a two stop load going to Vermillion and someplace else in Ohio. Both are near Cleveland. I was running short on hours yesterday, so i'll be leaving today...shortly.
This is the entrance to the old tunnel on the West Virginia turnpike.

I take A lot of truck pictures on the road, and truck show pictures when I can get to A show. For years I used an old Kodak 35mm,and it took good pictures. Then I bought A Nikon 35mm from A guy near Monroeville,Oh. for $40 and it took good pictures too,but everybody said "you need to go digital, you're way behind the times". So I did,and I'm glad because it's so easy to put the pictures right on the computer, crop them,e-mail them,or whatever you want to do. I bought A Kodak digital camera from Wal-Mart for $199.99,the best I could afford. Then the price went down to $179,then $159,and the last time I was in Wal-Mart it was $149. When I had to replace my old PC I bought one for $698,the best I could afford because I figured it would be the last one I'll get.Today I saw the same PC on sale at Staples for $349.

Finally! Got a load going to Webb,Al,near Dothan. Somebody brought the load to the shop, and it's already loaded on my trailer. All i've got to do is chain it down and go. Maybe i'll be able to afford gas to get to Winchester next weekend after all,but it's too early to tell.

Got the stew on and bubbling away.Had to go to Avon,Oh. Thursday, but I got unloaded and reloaded pretty quick, unloaded in Roanoke last night, and came home and cut up meat, potatoes, and onions until after 1am.Got that cooking now-that's the hardest part, the raw ingredients. After they're done it's just a matter of opening cans and dumping them in.Gotta go now, don't wanna let the pot boil dry or burn anything,or i'll have to go buy 300 cans of Dinty Moore before anybody gets here.

New battery,I should have said, not batteries. They only replaced the one that was bad,so now I've got one new and three old ones.Should have replaced them all in my opinion with winter coming. But I did get 8 new drive tires too. They put Generals on it-had Michelins before-and boy did they feel funny at first.Went to Dillwyn to load and thought I'd hit A patch of black ice in the first curve, but it was 85 degrees. Went to Fremont then Macedonia to Roanoke and thought I might be done for the week, but then I had to go to Avon,Oh. and reloaded at Sharon,Pa. for Lynchburg.Had A little small adventure on the way back. I got off of I-99 at Roaring Spring,Pa. to get A drink and A sandwich maybe.I was thinking there was A little fuel stop there, but apparently I was mistaken.Didn't see A fuel stop or A turnaround spot,so I kept going towards Roaring Spring to turn around at the Wal-Mart,but didn't see one of them either. So I continued on,rode through town, ended up on 867 south, had no idea where I was headed, road getting smaller and smaller. After A few miles the road got bigger, but still no where to pull over to look at my map or turn around. Finally I saw clearance lights approaching and hollered on the radio,"HELP!" or something, but it was A straight truck.Fortunately he did have A radio, and told me to go to the stop sign and make A right,go over the mountain and I'd be right back to 99. So I did and when I made that right I started climbing. When I got in the high side of the transmission I had to go right back to the low side to get over the mountain. When I finally struggled to the top the sign said 12% grade, next 2 miles. So I eased on down, still in the low side because I didn't know the road and didn't want to run up on another 15 mph curve like I did coming up.Got back on 99 and didn't even want A drink and sandwich anymore.

I've been out seeing how much money I could spend today,or so it seems anyway.I went to the drug store and got a prescription filled, stopped by the cell phone battery store to get a new battery, then had to go to Altavista to the shoe shop to get my boots I was having resoled.Made the mistake of criticising ( that just doesn't look right-maybe I can't spell criticizing either ) Jobyna's driving along the way,and how she pays attention to everything except what she's supposed to be doing, which is driving. Pretty quiet trip to Altavista. When we got to the shoe shop I saw her looking at a pair of Justin boots when I was about to pay for my repair job,and ended up buying them for her. They were $135 and the pair right beside them was $100,but she didn't like them, even though they looked pretty much the same to me.I get most of my shoes from Sportsman's Guide or Wal-Mart way cheaper, but sometimes ya just gotta do what ya gotta do.Anyway, all is well again.Lesson learned. ...and it finally rained, for the first time since the last time.Good rain too, just what we needed-over 4 inches total, but spread over 3 days.

I have another favorite cooking tool in the back yard too-the outdoor electric smoker range. My best friend "Traveling Kid" ( he died of a heart attack a few years ago, while driving a truck. He was just past the scales on rt. 58 in Suffolk,Va.) told me how to make it,and it works great-if you don't mind an old electric range in your yard.I had mine in the shed in Appomattox, now i've got one out back behind a small metal shed, kind've out of sight. All you need is an old stove with a drawer in the bottom to store pots and pans. You remove all the wires, pull the insulation out of the bottom of the oven-leave the rest,on the sides and top-then drill some holes through the bottom. You'll have 2 bottoms with empty space in between when you pull the insulation out,and I drilled some holes from inside the oven, then turned it over and drilled some from the bottom-that way the holes aren't straight through, but the heat and smoke still get through to the oven but not flames. Then you just use the drawer for a fire box, using wood and/or charcoal and you've got a cheap smoker that works great.I've cooked turkeys in it,boston butts, chicken on a can, venison, and lots of other stuff. You can use a gas stove too,and they're already ready-you don't have to fool with getting the insulation out or drilling holes, because they've got a burner in the bottom, and you just put a fire in there and you're ready to smoke.

Crap!..This week ain't going too good so far- I was supposed to deliver that load of beams in Birmingham tomorrow, but I went to the doctor today and he told me to come back tomorrow (again!) so he could look at it and change the bandage (again!). So, I finally had to give the load up. The doctor couldn't believe the amount of stuff he got out of it today-it had filled up again. He said it had to be a golfball sized amount of nasty stuff that was still in there. He said maybe tomorrow I would be good to go with just a band-aid. Same thing he said yesterday. But he said it was one of the largest cysts he'd ever seen, so I feel very special. Going broker every day, but special.

Got to looking around on e-bay last night and saw a Mack bulldog belt buckle.I liked it,and the top bid was like $8.99 or something so I bid on it too. The top bid kept climbing and I kept bidding 'til I was up to $29.99 I think, then I went to bed.I was hoping I got outbid because that was more than I wanted to pay,but you know how easy it is to get carried away at an auction. Anyway I checked this morning and was glad to see that I had been outbid, but I was astonished to see that the winning bid was $89.99!
I must be off to Cranberry Township,Pa. now with a load of pipe.

I went to Roxana, reloaded in Calvert City, Ky. for Ambridge, Pa. then loaded in Pittsburgh for Lynchburg. Nothing unusual or exciting, so I took some pictures of it...
well, this might be unusual-looks like a broken power pole with the transformer dangling from it.
Anyone know what this is? I see lots of them along the road, especially in Pa. This is in W.V. They're purple and triangular-i'm thinking some kind of insect trap.
    Self explanitory- Ansted, W.V.
The old Smith's Transfer terminal on rt. 60 near Charleston, W.V.
I think the plan here is to connect these things so you can drive across it.
some of the piling we've hauled to Roxana.
    A red Mack.
    A white Mack.
    A blue Mack.
And a colorful Peterbilt, loading storm debris in western Ky.

I've got a full report of my weekly adventures, but don't have pictures to prove any of it, so i'll save that for later. Even took photographic evidence of myself being broke down again, but it was just a flat tire...right front steer tire as a matter of fact.
Went to the Appomattox Railroad Festival Parade today, drove the mixer in it.( new video on youtube,by the way ) . What a great day for a parade! Beautiful weather, great turnout, more beautiul women than you could-well...you know. Didn't get any pictures of any of them because Jo-well...you know. Did get a few pictures though.
And how about college football? I always thought the greatest college football game ever played was Oklahoma/Nebraska in 1971 or '72, won by Nebraska 35-31. I've been a Sooner fan ever since. But the Oklahoma/Texas game today was also a great one, as was North Carolina/Notre Dame. Now,even though there's not a lot of good news around anywhere at the moment, if Kyle Busch finishes out of the top twenty again...that'll be good.
    And, some pictures from today...
a nice looking restored Duster 340 ( oops-forgot to resize)
the Woolridge Brothers chevyII drag race car
    ummm...62-3-or 4 Chevrolet
A model Mack-haven't I seen this somewhere before?
    '57 Chevy
A big dog with "Spot" the book bus...is that dog going to pee on that tire?!!

...and a beautiful woman scratching her head, like she's got cooties or something...

Well,I've got one load "in the hole" since I deadheaded home.My week wasn't near as good as I expected-should have left that load in Plymouth,it really wasn't worth fooling with, and I invested those two 3 liter Mountain Dews in it. As slow as it's been anything's better than nothing I guess, but it's a tremendous letdown to run as hard as I did and not even bring home $500....geez! About the only thing that would cheer me up is if Jim MacMahon showed up here with a big ol' check in his hand.
