  1. Just about anything works really, as long as there's something in it. At the truckstop and from the company that brings it out to me, it's treated to work down to -10...I put it in just because, but that shit's expensive...$17 for a 2-quart bottle which will get me about 3 tanks worth.

I like Howes myself, works good and tastes great.

...just kidding, DO NOT DRINK IT!..good stuff for your fuel though.

  2. Saw a few Burns trucks this week at the truckstop at exit 161 on I-64 in West Virginia, including the rare blue unit. I've seen a red one too, but most are Mack green, even the International.

This is a shot of Burns' yard located on rt. 60 at Sam Black Church, W.V. I believe they still have the yard and main office in Marlinton, but i'm not sure. They opened this yard a few years ago, and they haul pulpwood from the Westvaco yard a few miles west of here in Rupert to the paper mill in Covington. The story in "Wheels of Time" a few years ago said they lost a lot of stuff in a flood at Marlinton.

  3. HK, looks like you hit the nail on the head. I checked it out today and the shift pattern is the way you described. He's going by the HWY dept. Monday to take care of them and all parts for the air lines should be here also. I should have the tank strap repaired by then. After that I'll just haul when they call. When I get the hang of it, I'll help him study to get his CDL. I've tried to attach a pic, but it may be too dark.

    Thanks for the replies,

    Jeff

  4. I don't get the joke Other Dog.

Years ago Roadway (called big R) was the butt of all the jokes, then it was J.B.Hunt, then Swift...

just insinuating that they didn't have enough sense to know which end of the truck was which unless it was painted a different color...I know, it's not funny.

    hope this explanation helps.

my favorite- why'd the big R driver leave his wife? He came home and found her sitting on a trashcan eating a cornflake with a pie in each hand...now that's funny!

  5. Does anybody remember the days when Roadway had a blue and orange Rmodels running down the highways they went to CH's for a while heck Roadway ran almost all Mack back in the early days there are plenty of pics of old Mack coe's and B models I think I remember seeing some LJ's too Ryan

I remember them very well, especially the R-models with Detroit Diesels in them.

Old "Big R" joke- why does Roadway paint the fenders on their trucks blue?..so the drivers know which end goes under the trailer.

  6. Be nice if ole F.L. Moore bought Other Dog a Mack for Christmas. If your old B series wasn't a cement mixer you could have signed on with them as an owner operator and avoid the problems with that Peterjunk all together.

I could always take the mixer off and put a fifth wheel on it. Plenty of room for a sleeper too...and I think it's slow going up Sandstone with 46,500 lbs. on now!

Maybe I should just run local with it.

  7. Voila!! Truck related gifts for Rob it is!! From my son I received an almost new 55 gallon R model saddle tank, (13,000 miles new) to replace the one on Project R-12 that has nine patches welded to it. Also received another set of stainless lug nut covers,.and a complete exhaust system including one year old muffler, guard, and chrome stack for an R model with an E6 series engine.

I'm thinking that boy was raised right.

    Rob

installed it already I see. Looks great.

  8. Other Dog- overall rates are way down due to the economy. Strike one

Some people (Rob) will tell you that if the truck don't run, you don't get paid. Strike two

It seems that you are assigned a truck and get paid by the wheels turning. If the truck breaks, again, do you not get paid?

As an O/O, no work= no pay, but I would think as a company driver you get paid by the clock.

Rob, no employees are the true beauty of being self-employed. No hangovers, wife bitchin', plain ol crap attitudeNot taking care of equipment, yada yada. We're doing good, just wish it was better.

    true

    true

    true/no

false- I get paid by percentage. If I don't haul any loads I don't get paid, regardless of whether the truck is broke down or just that freight is slow.

  9. Well, I got done running and then comparing 2008 to 2009.

    Total Income down slightly

    Expenses down signafacantly

    Net income up nicely.

    * Expenses were down due to lower fuel costs.(almost $5/ gal last year)

repairs and Maint. down(seems I had more tire problems last year)

** I payed myself more this year (expense) but i still did OK

I still have several acoounts Rec. worth about $13K

To all the O/O, self employed, or owners of business- how was 2009 really?

I'm a company driver and I don't have the exact figures in front of me but I made quite a bit less than last year.

  10. Good point there Gambi! I forgot F.L.M ran Coronado's, I know they had a whole lot of Columbia's in the fleet. I think they advertised a couple of them in truck paper that they were selling.

That's "A" Coronado. Only got the one and Todd owns it himself. I drove it back to the shop from Carter Cat once, when I was dropping mine off at Cat.

  11. happy new year to all the mack frends here.

hope this is gona be a healthy and very good year for all of us.

    keep the old dogs alive.

mack 4 ever. (leon, the netherlands)

Amen brother! (Bulldogman) Thank you very much indeed.

  12. B61Mack, the fleet with the green and yellow Mack's are Sharkey/Sisbro Transportation.

Other Dog, I remember reading something about them being the first to use qualcomm as well and it may have been crazy to not idle the truck back then but they were trying to save money and I don't blame them but then again diesel was cheaper back then. You got to remember your dealing with country folks they live without ac and heat, now if they were city people they would be screaming bloody murder. Funny thing is I can live without ac but I got to have heat. Speaking of Burn's they are one of the few test fleets who were testing out the new emission Mack Pinnacle's with the DEF.

This appears to be an all Mack fleet. Took this on rt. 422 in Pa. somewhere between Kittaning and Ebensburg. Sign says Appalachian...something or other. Look to be oilfield exploration trucks?

  13. I seen a Burn's truck all the way out here a few times myself. I wish there were more all Mack fleets out there but in this day and age most companies are worried about their bottom line instead of brand loyalty.

No doubt, they get around. Might see one most anywhere. There was a good story in "Wheels of Time" about Burns a year or two ago. Jeff and Todd know Mr. Burns. They were the first trucking co. around here to use Quaalcom that I know of. They'd come into the mill in Covington in a brand new Mack on a hot summer day and get in the chip line and sit under the trailer in the shade because they weren't allowed to idle the trucks to run the air conditioner-and this was 25 or 30 years ago. Very few of H.H.'s trucks even had a working AC at the time.

  14. There are not many all Mack fleets out there. I know Polman Transfer out of Minnesota is an all Mack fleet and so is Sharkey Transportation out of Quincy, IL. I think Sharkey is in cohorts with Quincy Mack in some way since they seem to have ran Mack for years and the newest Mack they got is like an 02-03 from what I seen in their fleet, hell they still run some older CH's I believe. I wish DM Bowman was still an all Mack fleet, sell outs! Anyway there is a 3rd all Mack fleet, Harrisonburg Motor Express out of Harrisburg, VA I'm not sure if they are still in business or not though Harrisonburg Motor Express and there is a 4th all Mack fleet I forgot about it. They are Burns Motor Freight out of Marlington, WV and I think they have a few Freightliner's in the fleet. I'm sure Other Dog has heard of them and seen their trucks. Burns Motor Freight Mack Pinnacle

Oh yeah, I see Burns trucks all the time. They've been hauling chips and pulpwood to Westvaco in Covington for years and years, and you might see them hauling lumber on any pig path in West Virginia.

I don't know about HMX either, haven't seen any for a while but that doesn't mean they're not still in business. I was just looking at them on Hanks truck pictures yesterday.

One of Todd's trucks is on Hank's too. It's an old picture, Todd traded this truck for another Coronado a couple years ago.

  15. I see we got another Hokie fan in the house. The Hokies will win don't worry.

It's all over now. I told Bulldogman the vols were going down like a cold budweiser on a hot August night.

  16. If you can stomach Ryan "SuckDong" Seacrest, Fergie is about to appear on the New Years special on TV in just a few moments.

    Rob

I'm watching the Va. Tech- Tennessee game now, i'm going to bed when it's over. It's not looking good for the volunteers- it's 37-14 VT with just over 2 minutes to go. But they only need 3 touchdowns and a field goal to win it, i'll watch the rest of it.

  17. HaHaHa My parents live in Elliott Lake I'm about 3/half hrs east of them in North Bay, Ont.

Black Eyed Peas and Greens sure does sound like a Southern tradition, I still thing I might seek some out and give it a try.

they might know Bill. He had some great stories about trucking around in that part of Canada. I liked the one about the trip up rt. 41 to Pembroke with a load of cement.
