I delivered the load from Texas to Milton, Pa. Tuesday, then rode over to Brookfield, Oh. and got a load of coils and went to Roanoke. I thought I was going to Chester, W.V. with a curtain side, or Conestoga, or whatever you call it Thursday (they won't unload a flat bed in winter, and we didn't know if we could get a return load for a van), but they got a Fremont, Oh. load so I took that instead. Ran in lots of snow (again!) all the way (well, all right, most of the way!) up and back. Had to go from Fremont over to Butler, Pa. to reload at AK Steel-I hate AK Steel by the way, have I mentioned that before? My appointment was at 3pm, got there at 3:15 and waited in the holding pen until after 6 when they finally called the 3 o'clock trucks. Didn't get out of there until 9 last night, when it was blizzarding (I just made that word up). I drove down I-79, saw a cop in the median just before exit 99 in West Virginia, I looked at my speedometer and was doing 74 mph (speed limit was 70). He didn't move but then a 4 wheeler passed me like I was tied to a stump, and he came out and pulled the car over. I stopped where you get on rt. 19 and pulled on the shoulder and took a nap until almost daylight. Then I came on down 19 to Summersville and took rt. 39 over to Nettie, stopped at the GoMart for a coffee and sausage bistit, then rt. 20 to Charmco, and rt. 60 to I-64 at Sam Black Church. 39 and 20 was pretty much snow covered, but no problems. Everything was lovely when I got on 64, and I got to the shop about 11:30. Took some good pictures along the way too...

Cheswick,Pa.-that's where I went. I remember now, since I've already been there and back. I called Tina, one of our drivers who had been to this jobsite before, and after I talked to her I was beginning to regret taking this load instead of the pipe going to Anderson,S.C. She said it was very cramped, they sat all day waiting to get unloaded because they were pouring concrete, and concrete trucks were in and out all day until 5 o'clock that evening. She also said you had to go down a steep hill and drive onto a barge to get to the island where they were unloading, then they had to be pushed back up the hill, and they had to pick the back of their trailers up with a crane and move them over to make the turn through the gate at the railroad tracks to get out. Geez, what have I gotten myself into here? Usually if you're expecting the worst,it's never that bad. I made it in,you had to cross the tracks and make a hard left after you crossed the tracks but you couldn't pull very far forward through the gate because a crane was set up there, then hug the chain link fence on the left, because then you had to make a hard right to go down the steep cut they had made in the bank, but again you couldn't pull very far forward to make the turn because of a pile of stuff they had on the ground, and there was a little green thing on the right-looked like a gas meter or something-that you had to clear before you turned. I had dumped the trailer air on the back axle and locked the power divider in at first, and made all the turns with inches to spare. When I got down the hill I had to get over as close to the air compressor parked on the right at the bottom to make the hard left onto the "bridge" which was actually barges side by side across the river. When I talked to Tina I thought they put the truck on a barge and floated over to the island, and I wasn't too sure about all that! But I felt pretty good about the bridge when I saw them drive a bulldozer across it before I went across. So I made it onto the bridge and went across and got unloaded, turned around, and went back up the hill OK,and made it back through the gate without having to pick the trailer up and move it over. I should mention that I had a 48' trailer, and the others had 53s, and like I said I had only inches to spare on all the turns, including getting onto the bridge. I reloaded at Macedonia,Oh. for Roanoke and unloaded there Thursday night. Yesterday morning back at the shop Todd gave me a choice of another load of piling to Cheswick or kyanite going to Orrville,Oh. I went with the Orrville.

Just got home about 7:30 this morning.Could've been in about midnight, but I ran out of power and had to take a nap. The power plant load kinda sucked-it's near Fremont, where I deliver Kyanite regularly, and it paid about $100 more dollars than a Fremont, but when you consider that I had to go to Richmond to load, then go through two separate security checks when I got there-they looked under the hood,in the sideboxes, all the tool boxes on the truck and trailer,in the cab,in the sleeper, then after I went through 2 security gates where you pull in and a gate closes behind you before the one in front opens, they did the complete search all over again-it's just not worth the hassle. I know they're just doing their job too,but since i'm not a criminal it's kind of offensive when they get up inside the cab and sleeper and go through everything...twice.
Then I went to Masury,Oh. Thursday with a load of beams. Everybody hates to go to Masury because the load has to be tarped, winter or summer, even though the beams are stored outside on the ground at Petersburg where we load them. Apparently it somehow gets wetter if it's on a trailer, and it's hard to tarp beams without tearing the tarps up. I didn't cover the ends and still tore several holes in the tarps. After I'd been there about an hour and a half they decided to unload me,and I went on down to Galv-Tech in Pittsburgh and loaded up 5 coils for Handy in Lynchburg and dropped the trailer there this morning. Now i'm home raking leaves...well,i'm going to in a minute...maybe.

I know everybody gits tired of seeing pictures of these delicious and tender slow cooked ribs, but here's todays menu. Had just put them on the grill here...chunks of hickory wood on the charcoal. I actually smoke it over indirect heat for several hours, then smother it in BBQ sauce and wrap it tightly in aluminum foil to finish it. And I saw several of these creatures while I was cooking the ribs, they're sauteeing in the smaller pan, with garlic and butter.
    The end result...
...and how about that cabbage? it's really grown since yesterday!

Several years ago I was talking to one of P.L.Duncan's drivers in Sparrows Point,Md. I was telling him about my old cement mixer and my love of old trucks, and he told me about all the old trucks Mr. Duncan had, some packed in a building so tight you could hardly walk between them. He said they were all old, and most of them were running. I told myself then, "self, you need to get down there and take a look at those trucks". Well, after about 5 or 6 years, I finally did Friday. It was a great trip. I called Mr. Duncan before I went, and he told me to come on down. He's a very nice man, and when I got there I saw that his driver I talked to was understating if anything- he has all kinds of antique trucks, stuck everywhere! I took some pictures, then stopped to see an old friend of mine before I went to see mom and dad, and he owns the old 860 GMC that was a wrecker at the garage I worked at in Cumberland when I first got out of high school, in 1974. It was great! You can still see "Cumberland Auto Service" on the doors. Always loved that truck- 6-71 Detroit, 5 speed, with 2 speed rear. Just wish I could have driven it again! But, it was a great day!
p.s- the wrecker body and winch that used to be on the 860 is now on this 9500 GMC, still in use to this day!
    Here's some random pictures...

I unloaded a load of lumber at Byesville, Ohio Monday morning and deadheaded home-after sitting all day Monday and most of the day yesterday. First time ever there wasn't a load to be found. Another truck was in Hubbard, Oh. and one was sitting at Dallas Pike,W.V. and everybody came back empty. Todd said "if you're gonna sit, you might as well sit at home". I said "yeah, at least I can watch tv until they cut the lights off".
I took a few pictures while I was parked at the Go-Mart truckstop- nice looking Lonestar International, some oversize loads, a cabover Pete, a polar bear (I think), a colorful Pete, nice looking old KW. Never seen a truckstop so empty this time of day!

Not too bad a week this week, better'n last week anyhow! I left Sunday going to Orchard Park, then went to Cleveland and picked up a load of coiled wire ( or "welfare wire" as Big Jim calls it ) going to Summerville, S.C. That's just outside of Charleston. Todd took the loads because he had loads going to N.B.Handy in Lynchburg at Nucor Steel in Huger, which is just outside of Charleston.
After I unloaded at Handy I could have reloaded a Charlotte load, but I declined because it's race weekend in Charlotte, plus the Memorial Day weekend traffic on top of that...so I came home and cut the grass.
Went to Petersburg yesterday and got a load of beams going to Syracuse. I'm already dreading the traffic going up 81 Monday. Got home and "weed eated" for a while then planted a few more tomato plants that I pulled from the plant bed. Got a little room left for a few pepper plants, but they're not quite big enough to plant yet. Then the garden will be packed full. Saw a rabbit out there yesterday looking at it through the fence, but Otherdog (the fearsome beagle) ran him off.

I'm off until tomorrow,so today I had the traditional New Years meal of blackeyed peas and greens. They were mustard greens, but mustard, turnip, kale, they all taste about the same to me-I like'em all. Creeces are the best, but hard to come by. They say the greens are supposed to bring you money in the new year and the blackeyed peas bring you luck. You're supposed to have hog jowl too,but I skipped on that part. I don't know what the hog jowl is supposed to represent anyway, but money and good luck covers most things I guess. I'm also gonna try to quit smoking. I had quit for 10 years or more but started back just before my wife passed away. One of the more foolish things I've done-it's A hard habit to break.

I'm trying to remember where I went the first of the week...oh that's right, took a load of beams to Syracuse, N.Y. -Beautiful country up in that area. Then I went down rt. 15 from Corning, N.Y. to Trout Run, Pa. (near Steam Valley) to pick up a load going back to Lynchburg. That's another of my favorite rides, from Corning down to Williamsport, Pa. All routine, except the load tore my tarp all to pieces.
But the next trip, a load of pipes to Paintsville, Ky. was a horse of a different hue. The directions said to meet the contractor in the K-Mart parking lot in Paintsville. I told Jeff before I left that that was never a good thing, "meeting the man in the K-Mart parking lot- he's probably gonna take us up a dirt road right up the side of a mountain". And sure enough, that's exactly what we did. It was too steep to get up the hill going in, and I had to be pulled the rest of the way up with a bulldozer. They could only get one truck up there at a time, and there were 5 loads. After I got unloaded-I was first-I eased back down the hill and turned right on rt. 40 because I couldn't make a left like I wanted to, or i'd have taken the guardrail with me. Had to go past the entrance going in, up to an intersection, and turned right and then backed up into the road to turn around so I could turn left into the jobsite entrance. The front axle on the trailer was dangling over thin air when I turned in as it was. I got all the way over by the guardrail on the right and dumped the air on the rear trailer ax axle so I could turn a little shorter, but as soon as I turned I started climbing, and the rear axle was the only one touching the ground.I had the power divider in and poured the coal to it, but still couldn't make it all the way up. You can see where the truck was spinning in the picture taken on the right side. That's Kentucky rt. 40 down at the bottom of the hill, and it was a really tight turn- should have walked down a little further and took a better picture. Oh well, bring on the bulldozer...
when I finally got unloaded I saw one of the other trucks that had tried to turn around, and got stuck in the process. He had to call a wrecker to get out. And i'm sure everybody else had to be pulled up the hill too. Once again, when it's bad, there's always somebody worse off. Nice looking wrecker though.
I also hit a bird on the way, and the passenger window was down about 2 inches-what a mess!..feathers all up in the cab...bird parts all over the window.
Loaded with beams now going to Birmingham, to deliver Tuesday. I have a doctor appointment Monday to get this huge cyst on my back looked at. It's been there for years, right up between my shoulder blades, and i've had it "removed" a couple times, and had to have it lanced several more times, but it's always come back. It'll be fine for several years usually, then all of a sudden it'll get sore and very painful, like it is now. Can't lean back in a chair or sleep on my back at all.

Made a couple of trips this week, to Chillicothe Oh. with lumber, reloaded coils in Franklin coming back to Suffolk, Va. then took a load of beams to Neville Island, Pa. in a Conestoga and reloaded coils at the dreaded AK Steel in Butler, Pa. to unload in Chesapeake Monday. Took a few pictures along the way of course. I went over to the produce stand this morning and bought some squash and green beans so I can tell Paul it came out of my garden. I planted green, purple, and yellow green beans.
Saw a strange sight this morning-we were standing in the front yard minding our own bidness and an ostrich came trotting down the highway. No, really-it was about 7am and I hadn't drank anything but coffee. Otherdog took off chasing it and it made a right and turned into the driveway next door and fell down. I figured it had killed itself, but it was up and running again in a second. Headed to our back yard. I immediately thought since it didn't kill itself when it fell i'd do it myself when it crashed into my anti-rabbit defense fence and destroyed my garden...was already thinking about how to cook it...but it missed everything and went crashing into the woods. We saw it come out a couple houses down, it ran through their back yard and back to the road, took a left and trotted right back by here towards wherever it came from. Strange! I didn't know anyone around here had ostriches, never seen any near here. Still wondering what the dog would have done with it if he'd caught it.

I'm done for the week, actually got in Thursday night. I went to Baltimore with 60' beams Wednesday night and loaded at Sparrows Point Thursday. Left at 2 o'clock and got to Lynchburg at 8:00. Usually takes a little over 4 hours, but the traffic was terrible. I even washed the truck when I got home. I sent Kelsey some pictures of it in case she wants to put them on the new FLM website, www.flmoore.com .

We were talking about rt.250 a while back, the section between Fairmont and Moundsville,WV in particular,so Big Jim gave it a try and survived with no problems. He researched the trip well in advance too. I had told him about my trip across there in '80,and that I said at the time I wouldn't go back across it bob-tailing.And I told him what Bollweevil said, and what the man at Triadelphia had said. None of that scared Big Jim. He called the police departments in Littleton and Cameron, and they said the tight turns that used to be there had been done away with. Good thing-I just don't think you could make those turns as long as we are today. He was driving a Freightliner Columbia long wheelbase tractor with a 53' spread axle flatbed loaded with 47,000 lbs-overall length 77 1/2 feet. According to the Va. DOT I'm 70' overall with the Peterbilt and a 48' trailer. He said the worst part was the curve coming up out of Moundsville, and there was a hard turn onto a bridge somewhere farther down the line that took the whole road to make. Well, almost the whole road-he got over to the left as far as he could and he said he had about 2 feet to spare when he got onto the bridge.
Actually we were both thinking about going that way to Triadelphia Tuesday.I was several hours ahead of him,and when I went through Moorefield,WV Tuesday night-actually Wednesday morning it was about 10 degrees and clear. I was climbing the big mountain on rt.42 before you get to Mt. Storm when a pickup came up behind me and I could see snow blowing in the road in his headlights. It was so fine I hadn't even noticed it before, but as I neared the top it was no problem to see it.It was coming down hard and the wind was blowing it across in front of me,covering the road in places. Rt. 50 was pretty much covered,as was rt.560 up to Oakland,Md. Rt. 219 north was well salted so instead of taking 42 on to Friendsville I stayed on 219 up to Keysers Ridge and went to bed. No way I was going to try 250 in those conditions,so I went on across 68 to 79 north to 70 west to Triadelphia. Then I went on up 250 in Ohio to I-77 to pick up a load of brick in Sugarcreek going to Norfolk,Va. Still snowing all the way,but I had no problems until I got back to the usual trouble spot, which is I-64 from Beckley to the Va. line. For the second time this winter the road was closed after I got across Sandstone mountain because of accidents,so I pulled off on the ramp at the Dawson exit and took a nap. That's me-when the going gets tough I go to bed. I got up and went on to Norfolk and unloaded Thursday just after noon, then back to Petersburg and loaded another load of piling for Triadelphia to unload Monday.
Back to Big Jim- I called him and told him i'd run into a lot of snow, and when he got to the mountain before Mt. Storm-I don't know the name of it,it might be Mt.Storm mountain. It's a big one,4 miles with a 10 percent grade, has a bunch of those huge wind turbines on top- he couldn't even get up the mountain. He met 2 salt trucks at the bottom and they told him to wait until they came back then follow them up. He did,but in the meantime another truck came off of rt.93 and turned and started up the mountain, not knowing about the salt trucks. So when they came back,Jim fell in behind them and they started up and they soon caught the other truck, struggling to make it up. By the time he finally got up the mountain and got to Triadelphia it was too late to get unloaded. He unloaded the next morning and reloaded steel for Roanoke. He had an appointment time to unload at 12:30 the next day,so since he had plenty of time he came back down 250,thus proving that it can be done. Why anyone would want to though is a different story. But I can't say I won't do it again-Big Jim did. Besides,if it gets too tough I can probably find a wide spot somewhere to take a nap.

Haven't been blogging much lately...probably people don't read it much anyway, it's harder to find. I have trouble finding it myself, and I cain't put pictures on it.
Last week I went to Orchard Park and unloaded in the wind and rain. I left there at 10:30 am and had to be in Warren, Oh. by 2 o'clock to load. Pulled in at exactly 2, with an average speed of 59.4 mph. When I got loaded in Warren I had to go outside and tarp the load of plates-in the pouring rain. I brought that load to Lynchburg, then took a 2 stop load of pipes to Nashville, went back to Knoxville and loaded re-bar to Greenville,S.C. then loaded lumber to Moneta in Newberry.
This week I took a load of piling to McKeesport, Pa. and went to East Canton, Oh. to load firebrick to Petersburg. Then from Petersburg to Ambridge, Pa. I reloaded in Pulaski, Pa. to Chantilly, Va. Had a load of guardrail and posts, plus several pallets of buckets, blocks, crates, and other miscilaneous items. The woman at C.H.Robinson said the load required 4 chains and 4 straps-I ended up with 7 chains and 7 straps on it. Then I loaded a 55' load at the mill Friday after I left Chantilly. That delivers Wednesday in Broomfield, Co. I should have left today, but i'll leave in the morning.
Last weekend I added the sugar to my wine. Today I strained it and bottled it-tastes pretty good!

I found out my scanner was not compatible with windows vista, you could only get a driver for windows 98,nothing after that, and the primax website said they weren't gonna make any more drivers available for any later versions,so I figured I was just SOL. Since i'd been wanting a scanner because I take all of my road pictures with a 35mm,I bought a printer/scanner/copier at Wal-Mart today. Only thing is when I installed the program and gave it a try I lost all of my pictures that used to be in HP photosmart. And I had like 300 pictures...now i've got 35. I used to click on photosmart, view library-total pictures 300 or what ever, now it says total pictures 35. I mean ALL of my pictures were there...now I got 35...what's up with that?!! Where'd they go?..
It had all of my truck show pictures, all my webcam pictures, all of the digital pictures-every picture I had! Oh well,no sense crying over lost pictures-though that was my first thought-most of them are on The Diesel Gypsy's site, some are on webshots,a lot of them are on BMT,some on Kodak easyshare, some are on disc...and the rest are just gone evidently.."gone like a freight train, gone like yesterday, gone like a soldier in the civil war ,bang bang, gone like a '59 cadillac, like all the good things that ain't never coming back, she's gone ... Montgomery-Gentry
Had some pictures at Wal-Mart too,Jobyna dropped the film off there Friday. She had it in the one hour developing envelope already, but there was no one at the counter. When they paged the photo "technician" she came over and took it out of the envelope and put it in the 4 day envelope,I guess because she was too lazy to develop it then. When we went to pick it up yesterday they said it would be in Tuesday. I was disappointed and Jobyna was HOT!

Another driver, Sam, used to tell this true story -
He had to take a long load into Boston to a jobsite. He got to where he needed to make a right turn but didn't have enough room because a car was parked on the corner-illegally parked, imagine that! While he was stopped in the street wondering what to do, with traffic bottling up behind him, a cop strolled up and asked him what was going on. He told the cop he couldn't make the turn because of the car. The cop looked at the car and said "hit it, he ain't supposed to be parked there anyway"! Sam said "I can't do that", and the cop said "run over it, or i'll give YOU a ticket for obstructing traffic"! So he made the turn and ran over the car and went on to the jobsite. Said he never heard another word about it.
Sometimes we'd run 84 and 81, sometimes we had to go 95 through the city coming back if we had to go to Baltimore or the D.C. area. Once a driver went down the 684 to 287 to 87 route. 87 put you on 95 right at the north end of the George Washington Bridge. He got to the bridge right in the middle of rush hour, and as he was on the ramp to get from 87 onto 95 some complete moron, female type, actually tried to pass on the right and squeeze between the trailer and the wall on the right. She got up beside the trailer tandems- then there was nowhere else she could possibly go. Trailer tandem to her left...concrete wall on her right. Traffic was bumper to bumper, stop and go. It was impossible for her to back up, because if you pull up half an inch the car behind does too. And if the truck pulled up at all the trailer tires would hit her car. And that's what he did. When the opening came he was gone, and the trailer tires caught the car just in front of the driver side door and mashed the left front fender in and pushed the car over against the wall. Nothing else he could do really. He never heard another word about it either, and the stupid bitch got what she deserved in my opinion.

Thought I had the rabbit problem solved, but I guess not.Jobyna said she'd take over the dog's job for their salary,so I said ok-figured she'd eat way less kibbles and bits than they do,but it didn't work out. She was on routine patrol in the back yard when she spotted the enemy ( bunny). She got off a shot but the shotgun's kick knocked her down. She threw her equipment down and said "#$%@ you,I quit!!!" I said "quit?!! you're fired!" So,I guess it's back to the pepper spray.
Tried out my new smoker / grill on some ribs today-at least that seems to work great! Cooked them over indirect heat as you can see, worked fine!

Well,i'm at home again, until at least Monday-truck's been running hot lately, and i've had it at Carter Cat twice already to have it checked out,and there's nothing wrong with it. It runs at 200+ degrees all the time, bumps 220 on a hill...but there's nothing wrong with it,the fan, thermostats, water pump-working fine I kept telling Jeff it was running way too hot,and he sent me by Cat both times, and when they said there was nothing wrong when I left there Wednesday evening, after wasting a couple of hours,he told me to "put foot in 'er ass,it's on them now". So that's what I did - when it got up to 220 degrees going up the mountain on I-64 before you get into West Virginia,I never let off it-I kept saying something was wrong,it was running too hot,had been to Cat twice and they said ,in so many words,"no it ain't-our high-tech equipment says everything's fine, you're an idiot, now get the hell outa here!"
My theory was, it was the water pump-it's got 339,000 miles on it and never had a water pump put on it. I kind've figured it was just worn out from paddling all that water. I couldn't stand to keep driving the truck when I knew SOMETHING had to be wrong,so when I got in Friday morning Jeff told me to take it back to Cat,for the third time,he was gonna get a new water pump put on just for preventive maintenance( or maybe he was tired of hearing me whine about it!). So after I got unloaded in Roanoke I dropped it off at Cat again and went home. They said it would be ready Friday afternoon, and I was supposed to pick it up and get a load of pipes at the shop going to Monroeville,Pa. Before I got out of town good Jeff called me and said not to worry about picking the truck up-it had a blown head gasket. Didn't surprise me-I thought all along it had a blown head gasket At least I get to watch the new "Ice Road Truckers" Sunday night.
And speaking of hot-geez! Went outside to stake my tomatoes after my Mr. Stripey toppled over and broke and the heat was intense. It's 92 here now. I remember when I was a kid,out in a hay field picking up square bales out of the field ( round balers weren't invented then!) or working in tobacco on days like today-or hotter, for that matter- but I couldn't do it now

Dang it! Got up this morning and looked at the peach tree in the back yard, which was full of nice big peaches as recently as yesterday evening, and it was stripped bare! They weren't quite ripe, just starting to turn red,but apparently they were ripe enough for whatever ate them. A few were still on the tree half-eaten. I don't know if it was squirrels, racoons,a possum,or crows-crows ate all the cherries off the tree, and the rabbit about got the beans before I started spraying them with the hot sauce and soap. Should've sprayed the peaches too I guess.
Got a little shower of rain yesterday, barely enough to settle the dust, but every little bit helps.
I must be off now,to start that long trip to Orchard Park. I'm already dreading that long hard ride up rt. 219,but i've gotta go.
might have the answer here-a fake owl!
and the runaway ramp,Ridgway,Pa. rt. 219
...so much for the fake owl idea-owl looks so real even I think it's real-there's three crows on the ground and a squirrel in the peach tree right now. Apparently they're way smarter than I am,I spent almost $20 for that owl. $20 will buy a lot of Texas Pete!
back to the old pepper spray!
ok,final update before I go to work-Jobyna insists that the owl has to actually be in the tree for it to work.It was only about 20' from the tree at first. I say if the squirrels were intimidated by the owl at all,it's close enough-but I moved it over into the tree anyway. Now we'll see who's smarter around here-me,her,or the squirrels.

...yeah,this is a giant steel mushroom on rt. 51 in Pittsburgh,a random shot from Phillipsburg,Pa ( -Jobyna asked lots of questions about this picture-lots of people have probably never been through Phillipsburg, and wonder what it looks like! ),a couple of Mack dump trucks on I-77 in W.V,a big Mack all-wheel drive wrecker in Broadway,Va, the load of cement mixers I picked up in Malta,Oh, the old Cedar Grove Truckstop on rt. 60 in W.V,the old truckstop in Ansted,W.V,and the old weigh station just east of Ansted. I have stopped at both of these truckstops when they were open.
...and for the weekly report,I went to Orchard Park,N.Y, Brookfield,Oh. back to Roanoke, then to Zelienople,Pa,Brookfield to Roanoke, and to Conneaut,Oh. and Brookfield to Roanoke. Riding my a$$ off in other words! Got to go to Petersburg tomorrow and get a load going to Fairmont,W.V. and reload at Brookfield for Roanoke. Then I'll make one more turn and be off on vacation for a week. Normally I wouldn't have to leave on Sunday after making three rounds, but I agreed when they agreed that i'd be off when I got back from the second turn on Thursday. Sometimes you got to negotiate

And an Autocar on a trailer on rt.77 in W.V, headed north between Ripley and Parkersburg.

Got home yesterday after our safety meeting and went to the garden and pulled up what was left of my cabbage,(saved what I could),squash, watermelons, and A row of snaps. Then I ran the tiller over it and sowed turnips, mustard, and spinach mustard, and sprinkled it with the hose. It's so dry everything I pulled up had done all it's gonna do,so maybe I'll have a turnip and some greens if it ever rains. Then I went to the store and bought A case-the Ice Road Truckers marathon comes on at 1:00,and the Michigan race too,so I might just sit on my a...uh,tail I mean, and take the day off today.

I made those two turns and I'm loaded for Sunday.Went to Zelienople,Pa. Monday then over to Macedonia,Oh. to reload coils for Roanoke,Va.Then I went to Orville,Oh. and over to Macedonia to load coils to Roanoke,Va,where they make truck frames out of them.Even Mack truck frame rails are made there.Usually I'll have three coils, and I put seven chains on them because they are so tall and narrow-about 6 feet high, and 14" wide.I always horse shoe 2 chains, then criss cross 2,plus throw a chain across the top of each one. Now I'm loaded with Kyanite going to Zelienople,Pa. again, and it starts all over Sunday. Stopped by the grocery store on the way home today, just to pick up A few things...how come I can't go in the grocery store, even to "pick up A few things",without spending at least $100?

what a day-went to the eye doctor this morning...she said everything was looking about the same, which is good. "Ramblin' Man" unloaded the load I brought in last night, which is good. Jobyna and I stopped by the Food Lion in Rustburg on the way home, where they had T-bone and top sirloin on sale.Which is good. We got a few groceries,I picked out a great looking top sirloin steak from the reduced rack, and told her to pick out any steak she wanted, and i'd cook it when we got home. She picked a nice T-bone,one I started to get for her myself. When you decide to do steak, which we don't too often,it's nice to pick the one you want, right? That's good. She likes hers a little more rare than I do,like so rare a good vet could get it back on it's feet,so I put my steak on the grill first.I was using the little small round grill with three legs because I was only doing two steaks, and when I attempted to adjust the draft on the bottom the whole grill tipped over, dumping the great looking top sirloin on the ground Very bad. She said "i'll take it inside and rinse it off,it'll be ok". But it had dirt in all the nooks and crannies,so I gave it to the dogs. I was mad as #*!! So I went rummaging through the freezer and found a pack of cube steaks, defrosted them in the microwave, and was going to grill them when the kids from next door came over, being about 3,4 ,and 5 years old. They wanted to play with Otherdog ( the beagle, not me),then they wanted to go inside, then they wanted something to eat,so we got a package of hotdogs out of the freezer and I cooked them ,along with the cubed steaks. Then Jobyna sprayed some "Off" on the little boy's legs and he commenced to squalling, saying "I'm gonna tell!",then ran home. The little girl was crying because she had to go. So I wrapped up 5 hotdogs ,kept 4, (I dropped one of them on the ground too!) and Jo took them next door, and all is well now...until I found out mom next door is a U.Va. fan,and i'm diehard Va. Tech.
I told Jobyna I'd just leave her steak in the refrigerator, get another one tomorrow, and we'll still enjoy a nice steak dinner together...which is good.
sorry, best picture I could come up with today...

So,as I was sayin' I went to Greensboro yesterday morning and came back and went to Dillwyn and picked up a load of kyanite going to Chester,W.V. I should have delivered it today, but Todd told me to go to the doctor and deliver it Monday. So I did, except for the going to the doctor part.I've had a sore throat on one side all week-hurts all the way from my ear to my neck on the left side. It hurts so bad when I swallow I couldn't even sleep Wednesday night.I went to the store and got some Sudafed,Sucrets,Chloraseptic and aspirin so I hope that'll get rid of it. My son,his wife, and Jeff all had a sore throat recently,so I don't know what's going on.
Now,back to the jobsite adventure- 5 of us loaded 60' concrete bridge beams in Bristol,Tn. and took them to Surry Co.N.C, near Mount Airy. We got off of I-77 at exit 93,turned west, then turned on a little skinny road that was not big enough for a truck. Then we came to a dead end and had to turn right off of a narrow bridge onto an even smaller road. Followed that to another dead end and had to turn right, then back up almost a mile to the bridge job. Had to back across another bridge with a 90 degree turn as you come off it,then around a couple more curves before getting to the jobsite. Then we just backed onto a temporary bridge over the creek and got unloaded. The beams had to be set in sequence,so we unloaded in the same order we got loaded. I took some pictures of course...
hope I get 'em in the right order, but here goes-1. waiting to get loaded, 2.coming to the first narrow bridge, where we had to turn right at the end, 3. the curve coming off the second narrow bridge that we had to back around, 4. still backing up, 5.still backing up 6.still backing up 7.waiting to unload-i'm first in line, which means I was last to unload 8.first truck empty, pulled around to front-notice how narrow the road is! 9.sitting on the temporary bridge, waiting to unload 10.the dead beaver in the mill pond, before we got back to the bridge where we had to make a hard left onto on the way out 11.turning onto the bridge 12.totally unrelated, but I liked it-this is on rt. 250 in W.V. somewhere south of Moundsville.

It's been nice running south for a while, but now i'm headed to Cincinnati.I have no energy...none. Just feel tired all the time. It said on the antibiotics prescription I got that that was one of the side affects. I didn't have a lot of energy to start with with the infected gum-waited a week too long to do anything, now i'm paying for it.
